Description

INDICIA BEARING DEVICES FOR VERTICALLY SLIDABLE DOORS Filed Dec. 21, 1953 1] i H at 19 12 W 15 17 41 .4
f2 5 50. INVENTOR.
I .R M l BY 1 1 I Qfiorneg 3 pended warning sign and the clearly visible warning indicia thereon.
As a means for preventing thieves from stealing the sign 12 by simply lifting same from its supporting brackets 15 when the door is in closed position, I provide a pair of angle irons 18 which are so secured to the door stiles that their lateral legs 18 extend just above the outer ends of rod 13 when the door is closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, and thereby prevent unauthorized removal of the sign from the supporting brackets 15.
To further resist unauthorized removal of the sign 12 from its supporting brackets as by shifting the supporting rod 13 laterally along its longitudinal axis to thus evade the obstructions to its vertical lift imposed by the angle irons 18, I provide a pair of abutments 19 which are secured to the rod 13 and positioned near the angle irons 18, when the door is closed position. An attempt to laterally shift the rod 13 will be obstructed by the engagement of either one of the abutments 19 with one or the other of the legs 18 of the angle irons 18.
In its downward movement from raised open position into closed position, the door 10 will carry the sign 12 on brackets 17 until the ends of rod 13 engage and seat themselves on the brackets 15 whereat the sign 12 will become suspended on rod 13 across the door opening and the door then will continue to descend into its closed position whereat the lateral legs 18 of the angle irons 18 will become positioned just above the rod 13 thus together with the abutrnents 19 cooperating to obstruct upward or lateral movements of the sign-supporting rod 13 to thereby prevent unauthorized removal of the sign from its supporting brackets 15.
Obviously, my invention is operative without the door angle irons 18 and abutments 19 on the rod 13.
As shown in Fig. 1, the sign 12 is provided with warning indicia in the phrase Danger-Stop. As stated above, the sign may carry thereon advertising indicia in lieu of or in conjunction with the warning indicia.
It is also obvious that my device is operative in a similar manner as above described when the sign 12 is installed on the rear or inner side of the door 10 as illustrated by the dot and dash lines in Fig. 4. In such operation the brackets 15 are mounted on the inside faces of the interior finishing strips 11 of the door jambs for support thereon of the rod 13 with the sign 12 suspended therefrom on the rear or inner side of the door 10 when the door is in closed position. The lifter brackets 17 being installed, in such operation, on the inside faces of the interior door stiles 10 and since the chances of unauthorized removal of the sign are remote the use of the angle irons 18 and abutments 19 may conveniently be dispensed with.
Various changes may be made in the details of the parts and members by those skilled in the art to which my invention apertains without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims, hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to the details disclosed herein for purposes of illustration of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a door adapted to slide vertically between a pair of laterally spaced vertically disposed jambs of the door opening into open position, of an indicia-bearing sign releasably supported on the jambs of the door opening when the door is in closed position, and means on said door adapted to engage and lift and carry said sign on said door during the upward movement of said door into open position.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a door adapted to move vertically between a pair of laterally spaced vertically disposed jambs of the door opening into open position, of an indicia-bearing sign releasably carried on stationary supports mounted on the jambs of the door opening above the bottom edge of the door, means mounted below said supports on and near the bottom edge of said door adapted to lift and carry said sign on said door in suspended position, during the upward movement of said door into open position, with at least a lower portion of said sign projecting below the bottom edge of said door.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a door adapted to be moved vertically between a pair of laterally spaced vertically disposed jambs of the door opening into open position, of an indicia-bearing sign supported on a rod extending laterally across the door opening and releasably carried on stationary brackets, mounted on the jambs of the door opening, when the door is in closed position, additional brackets carried on said door close to the bottom edge thereof adapted to engage said rod and thereby lift and carry said sign on said door during its upward movement into open position.
4. In a device of the kind described and as set forth in claim 3 including means on said door preventing lifting of said rod and sign from their support on said stationary brackets during the time said door is in closed position.
5. In a device of the kind described and as set forth in claim 4 and including means on said rod preventing shifting of said rod, in a direction parallel to its longitudinal axis, to thereby release said rod from its support on said stationary brackets during the time said door is in closed position.
6. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a door adapted to slide vertically between a pair of laterally spaced vertically disposed jambs of the door opening into open position, of an indicia-bearing sign supported on a pair of laterally spaced hangers mounted on a rod extending laterally across the door opening, stationary brackets mounted on the jambs of the door opening in a horizontal plane adapted to releasably support the ends of said rod when said door is in closed position, a pair of additional brackets mounted on said door in vertical planes laterally offset from the vertical planes of said stationary brackets and below the horizontal plane of said stationary brackets, said additional brackets on said door functioning, during the upward movement of said door, to engage and lift and carry said rod and sign on said door in its upward movement into open position while at least a lower portion of said sign projects below the bottom edge of said door.
7. In a device of the kind described and as set forth in claim 6 including a pair of angle irons mounted on the door stiles having lateral legs extending above said rod when the door is in closed position thereby preventing lifting of said rod and sign from their support on said stationary brackets when said door is in closed position.
8. In a device of the kind described and as set forth in claim 7 including a pair of laterally spaced abutments on said rod close to said angle irons disposed in vertical planes spaced inwardly of the vertical planes of said angle irons adapted for preventing the shifting of said rod in a direction parallel to its longitudinal axis to thereby release said rod from its support on said stationary brackets during the time said door is in closed position.
