STRAW-STACKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,940, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed November 2 2, 1852. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS \V. HASSELMAN, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have inventcd'a new and useful Improvement in Straw-Stacking Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters indicate the same or corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention belongs to that class of machines known as portable straw-smokers, in which the carrier is composed of one or more connected sections and mounted upon suitable frame-work, so that it may readily be elevated and revolved in any direction, and folded up securely for transportation.
. Heretofore stackers of this class have been usually sustained from a point above the carrier by means of a derrick, as in the stackers of Reeve and Oortelyow; and lay-object is to dispense with structures ofthis sort, and to provide a stacker which shall perform its work thoroughly and be less bulky and less expensive.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my machine; Fig. 2, a top view; Fig. 3, a front view; Fig. 4:, a vertical section on line w 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a top view in the plane of line ;1 y, Fig. 3, showing-the fifth-wheel b. Fig. 6 is a side view, showing the pulley or Windlass, with the guide for the stay-rope. Fig. 7 is a top view of the same.
In detail A is the outer or upper and B the inner or lower section of astraw-carrier, which are'hinged at h for convenience infolding up. More than two sections may be used, it de- G and I) are pulley-wheels connected by a frame of the straw-carrier.
E is the shaft of the pulley-wheel G, having about midwaya miter-wheel, a,which is geared intoa second miter-wheel, a, mounted on the vertical shaft h,which is seated in the crossbar 1-1 of the main frame. At the bottom of this vertical shaft is mounted a bevel-wheel, c, which engages with another bevel-wheel, c, mounted on the shaft K which is supported by the hanger K, and at its outer end is the driving-pulley K. It is readily seen that when power is applied to the driving-pulley K it is D, and thence to the carrying or slotted belt of the stacker, causing it to move around the rollers of the frame or chute B.
F F is a frame supporting the carrier, which revolves upon a fifth-wheel, I), so that it may be moved in either direction about its axis by hand or any suitable device.
G G are braces rigidly attached to the sides of the section B of the carrier, and mounted on the shaft E in such manner as to allow the carrier to be moved up and down, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
II E are the cross-bars of the sliding frame on which the stacker is mounted, and the sides of this sliding frame move up'and down in channels in the uprightsot' the main frame I I, and this sliding frame is raised or lowered by any suitable means. In the drawings I show a crank,f, shaft M, and rope and Windlass for this purpose, the upper end of the rope pass ing over the pulley p and fastened to the sliding frame. I
L is a spool with crank 6, having a rope, I, which passes through the eye (I and over or through the end of a brace or stay, l, and having a counter-balance, N, at the other end of the rope. This counter-balance stcadies the stacker and relieves the strain on the Windlass L. This counter-balance may be dispensed with; but it is helpful in the manner indicated. It may be a mere box, and filled with earth whenever it is to be used.
N is a support for sustaining the stacker when folded up and let down in its frame for moving about. 0 is the base of the main frame.
. .My machine may readily be used on the ground, or may be mounted on the runninggear of a wagon,'if desired.
In Fig.2 the dotted lines indicate the various positions of the shaft E as the carrier is revolved onthe fifth-wheel. It will be seen therefore, that the carrier may be moved up and down in a vertical plane, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and at the same time revolved in a horizontal plane, as shown in Fig. 2.
My machine operates as follows: If the machine be in position shown in Fig. 1, by
turning the crank the operator lifts or raises the carrier to the top of the stationary frame I, and it is then in a position to be turned up or down on its stay-braces G, or around on the fifth-wheel b. \Vhen the Work is done the stacker is let down in the main frame again by means of the crankfand its windlass, the sections are folded over upon each other, and the rear or outer end pulled down to rest upon the support N. It is then inposition for transportation, the weight W, it used, being removed also.
I believe that mydescription will enable any one skilled in the art to understand how my device is constructed and how it operates. I My device may be usedin direct connection with athrasher by dispensing with the sliding frame H H, and with a short straw-carrier on the thrasher when my device is set close up to the end; or the straw might be allowed to fall from the thrasher directly upon my revolving carrier.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a straw-stacker, the combination of the main frame I I, the vertical sliding frame H II, adapted to move up and down therein, fifthwheel I), and the frame F F, revolving on the fifth-wheel?) and supporting the folding strawcarrier, with means for raising and lowering the sliding frame from below, substantially as described.
2. In a strnw stacker, the combination of a main supporting-frame, I I, a sliding frame, H H, adjustable up and down in said frame, and a revolving folding stacker-frame supported ter-b alance W for relieving the strain on the machinery, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a straw-stacker, the combination of the main frame I I, thesccondary frame H H, adjustable up and down in said main frame, a fifth-wheel located upon the secondary frame, the carrier, and mechanism for actuating the carrier, substantially as described.
5. In a straw-stacker, the combination of the main frame I I, the secondary frame H H, adjustable up and down therein, the sectional carrier A B, horizontally adjustable, and actuating-gearing mounted below the plane of the carrier, substantially as described.
6. The combination of thefolding carrier A B,the frameF F, adjustable frame H H, main frame I I, braces G G, shaft E, wheels to a, pulleys D and U, and their connecting-belt, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of November, 1882.
LEWIS W. HASS ELMAN.
