Description

(No Model.) A
J. B. SUT'GH & W. C. MGELHENY',
ROLLER DIE.
\ 'N0.z74,a4o. i Patented Mar. 27, 138%.`
following is a specicatiou, reference being required rapidity, we have conjointly invented roller-dies for rolling and forming steel or iron bars intol blanks for nut-locks.
UNITED STATES i PATENT OFFICE.
'JOHN B. sUToE AND WILLIAM o. McELEENEoE PITTsBUEe, PA.
ROLLER-DIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 4No. 274,840, dated March 27, 1883. Application filed October 23, 18x32. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beit known that we,-JOHN B. SUTGH and WILLIAM C. MGELHENY, citizens ofthe United States ot' America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State ot' Pennsyl'vania, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Roller-Dies, of which the had therein to the accompanying drawings. Our invention relates to an improvement in Letters Patent of the United States for an improvement in nutlocks, No. 257,782, bearing date of' May 9,1882, having been granted to John B. Sutch, and finding himself unable to make the saidl nut-locks by hand with `the roller-dies to manufacture them, ofwhich the following is a full description, reference "being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure lrepresents a' sectional view of the roller; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; and
The roller Alias a groove, a, in its circumference, ot'- a depth and width to accord with the thickness and width of the bar to be formed into a blank. At the bottom of the groove are, at regular intervals, depressions b, gradually rising to anap'ex and decreasing in the same manner at the opposite side. These elevations serve to compress the material to be formed, so as to `bevel the under side, the apex or highest part of the elevations reducing the bar at the point fto a thinness to be easily cut or broken. Near the center of the distance between two elevations are cavities c at the bottom of thegroove, one at each side of the central distance, leaving a short space, d, between them. The cavities c are of the form ofan inverted pyramid or cone, so as to produce on the bar, when rolled, at its under side, a pointed projection of that forni. The bar, after being rolled and pressed, presents a formm as shown in Fig. 3, and has to be out at d and f, the resulting-pieces being each a blank for I i one nut-lock of the kind described in said Letters Patent, which pieces have to be bent to be finished.
Having thus described our invention, we claimy A roller-die provided with the groove a, the points f, to nearly sever the blank, and the recesses c, to form the projections or points on the blank, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures inpresence ot' two witnesses.
JOHN B. SUTGH. I WILLIAM C. MCELHENY.
