Description
May 22, 1956 J. .1. FRENCH ROOF FOILER FOR REPAIRING SHINGLES Filed Oct. 8, 1953 Mm W J a NMJRN United States Patent 2,746,322 ROOF FOILER FOR REPAIRING SHINGLES John Joseph French, Bellinghani, Wash.
Application October 8, 1953, Serial No. 384,963
1 Claim. (Cl. 81-3) This invention relates to tools and devices for repairing a roof particularly of the wood shingle typein which the shingles split and decay, and in particular an applicator having a chamber for a roll of foil with a blade extended from the chamber and adapted to feed the foil between, under, or over shingles whereby foil of aluminum or other metal or strips of paper may be installed over a break or opening in a shingle with one end of the foil or tape secured by friction between upper and lower shingles.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a tool some- I what similar to an adhesive tape holder inwhich metal foil may be withdrawn from a roll, formed over the end of a blade and inserted under or between shingles with the blade whereby with the upper end of the foil frictionally gripped by the shingles the lower part may be cut or torn at the lower end of a shingle to provide a protecting layer of foil over adamaged or worn portion of a shingle. 1
Wood shingles and particularly cedar shingles become brittle with age and portions thereof, particularly around nails which hold the shingles to a roof decay forming recesses in which water is retained and the water eventually passes through the nail holes causing a leak. Wood shingles also split easily and after becoming brittle with age it is difficult to drive nails through the shingles without splitting the shingles. For this reason this invention contemplates a device for installing metal foil over openings through wood shingleswithorwithout nails and with the foil permanently secured in position over damaged I parts of the shingles.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide tionally heldbetween upper and lower shingles.

'=-Figure 2 is :a view showing a blank with the casing iscfonned.
Figure 3 is a :plan view of theapplicatorshowinglithe device-with ea-strip of foil extended over the blade;
plicator of this invention includes an elongated blade 10 having a casing mounted on one end, the casing being formed with a base 11, wings 12 and 13 forming end walls thereof, a tongue 14 extended from the forward edge providing a guide for the tape over 'the blade and an arcuate section 15 forming a rear .wall with a finger receiving opening 16 therein and with tabs17 and 18 extended from the end and adapted to be rolled'to form bearings for a pin 19, and a cover 20 havinga hub 21, and hooks 22 and 23 providing means for retaining the coverin position on the casing.
The blade 10, which is formed with beveled corners, 24 and 25 on the extended end may be formed of steel or other suitable material, and thebase 11 of the casing may be securedto the blade by welding or other suitable means.
As illustrated in Fig. 4 the rear wall 15 extends slightly 2 beyond the end of the blade 10 and is curved upwardly providing an arcute section 26 in which the opening 16 is positioned whereby afinger of an operator may be inserted through the opening to restrict outward movement of the foil and also to provide means for rewinding excess foil on the roll. 7
The foil extends from a roll 27 in the casing, over the base 11 and below a rolled lower edge 28 on the extended end of the cover, the edge or head 28 being spaced slightly above the upper surface of the base 11.'
The hooks 22 and 23 are mounted with eyes, such as the eyes 29, shown in Fig. Son the end walls 12 and 13 of the casing, the eyes being mounted in openings 30 and 31 of the end walls.
With the parts formed in this manner foil is withdrawn from the roll and the extended end formed around the extended end of the plate 10, as shown in-Fig. 4 whereby with the end of the blade inserted between shingles, as shown in Fig. l the extended end of the Another object of the invention is to provide a device for installing metal foil or the like over damaged parts of shingles in which the foil may be installed in a plurality of layers.
Alfurther object of the invention is to provide an applicator for positioning foil or strips of other material over damaged parts of shingles of a roof in which the applicator is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and otherobjects and advantages in view the invention embodies a substantially cylindrical casing having a door hinged to the casing and positioned in one side thereof and a narrow thin blade extended from the base of the casing and positionedto receive foil and the like from a roll in the casing with the foil passing through a slot in the side of the casing from which the blade extends.
Other features and advantages of the invention will. appear fromthe following description taken in connection shingles of the roof.
life of the roof.
foil may be deposited over the upper edge of a shingle and the foil drawn downwardly to the lower end of,
the shingle at which point the foil may be torn or cut thereby providing a complete cover for a crack or opening in the shingle.
It will be understood that several layers of the foil may be positioned, one above the other on a shingle and the layers may be spaced laterally as may be desired.
When the foil is to be used on shingles that are not loose, nails are not required, however where shingles are loose, the shingles should be nailed, after the foil is in position thereon. g
With this applicator, even a novice can apply'metal foil over breaks in shingles whereby the life of a roof is extended indefinitely. It will be understood that even paper applied to a roof in this manner will extend the It will be understood that modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departingfrom.
the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A metal foil applicator comprising a substantially cylindrical casing having end walls, a base integral with said end walls, an arcuate rear wall integral with the References Cited in thefile of this patent base and a cover hinged to the edge of the rear wall, and V v H UNITED STATES PATENTS extended over the edges of the end Walls, means on the base engaging the cover for retaining the same in fixed 1243569 Taylor 1917 xrelationto's'aid base an elongated blade upon one end 5 1718143 Hfmmck June 1929 of which the base of the casing is mounted, the edge of 2167908 Rlchards 1939 .said cover being spaced from said base, and said rear wall having a finger receiving opening therein said blade posi- =tioned to receive metal foil of a roll in the casing and adapted to insert the foil between shingles of a roof. 10
