Application October 13, 1952, Serial No. 314,548
1 Claim. (Cl. 40152.1)
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in picturefrarnes and more particularly to a self-supported frame constructed of a molded transparent or translucent material having a solid front panel and behind which the picture is mounted.
An important object of the invention is to provide a two-piece picture frame composed of a transparent or translucent front panel and a removable back holding a picture behind the front panel.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more flflly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, in which:
Figure l is a front elevational view;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on a line 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a rear elevational View of a modified construction.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line 6-6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the locking bevel for the back; and,
Figure 8 is a fragmentary rear perspective view of the front panel showing the locking groove for the back.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, and first with respect to the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the numeral 5 designates a stepped base from the upper step 6 of which a front panel 7 rises. Base 5 and panel 7 are integrally constructed of a suitable commercially well known either transparent or translucent plastic, glass or the like and the panel is recessed at its back as shown at 8 to provide a marginal flange 9 at its side and top edges.
A back 10, which preferably is of a similar material, is closely fitted within the flange 9 flush with the back of front panel 7, and pegs or buttons 11 are integrally formed at the inner surface of back and adapted to lockably engage in recesses 12 in the back of the front panel. The lower edge of the back rests on the rear portion of the uppermost step 6 of the base.
The pegs or buttons 11 are formed with shoulders 13 2,746,190 Patented May 22, 1956 ice to space the back from the front panel sufficiently to receive a picture (not shown) in recess 8 between the front panel and the back.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 5 to 8 inclusive, the stepped base 14 and front panel 15 are integrally formed in the manner heretofore described and the flange 16 at the rear upper edge of the front panel is formed with a tapered or substantially V-shaped groove 17 which faces downwardly and forms a pocket which is adapted to lockably receive a beveled flange 18 at the upper edge of back 19.
In either form of the invention, the back may be removed and a picture placed in the recess at the back of the front panel and the back then replaced to hold the picture in the frame.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein decribed and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A picture frame comprising a base, a front panel rising integrally from the base, said base including front and rear portions projecting forwardly and rearwardly respectively beyond the front panel to support the latter in a perpendicular position relatively to the base, said panel being of vision penetrating material and having a large recess, at its rear surface, bordered by a marginal flange, said recess extending to the upper surface of the base, a back panel detachable with the front panel and supported on the base, said back panel engaging all of the inner surfaces of said marginal flange and the top of the base in filling said recess, the rear surface of the back panel being flush with the rear surface of said marginal flange, said back panel having inwardly directed shoulder means engaging the front panel in defining, between said panels, a picture receiving recess within the recess of the front panel, the front panel having, at its upper end, means extending from the flange forming a pocket opening through the rear surface of said panel, and the back panel having an extended flange insertable into the pocket to hold the back panel in assemblage with the front panel.
