it is another object of thi invention to provide an,
applicator which is easy to use and positive in its operation.
Another object of this invention is to provide an applicator which may be filled neatly andeasily.
Still another object of this invention is the provision of an applicator which is of simple construction and easily assembled.
The manner in which the foregoing and other objects of this invention are accomplished will be apparent from the accompanying specification and claim, wherein:
Figure l is a view in side elevation of the presently described applicator, partly broken away better to show the interior construction;
Figure 2 is a sectional view in elevation of the nozzle assembly of the presently described applicator in its sealed position;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but illustrating the nozzle in its open operating position; and
Figure 4 is an end view of the presently described applicator.
Referring to the drawings, the applicator of this invention includes a reservoir 1%) which preferably is in the shape of a gun barrel. Its ends are capped with perforated screw caps 12, 14. A piston 16 is reciprocable within the barrel. Although the manner of mounting the piston is variable, it is preferred to mount it slidably on a notched rod or rack 18. A compression spring 20 is included in the assembly to permit advancement of the rod, whereupon the piston may remain substantially stationary but with a corresponding compression of spring 20. Notched rod 18 extends outwardly through the rear of the barrel and cooperates with pawl means contained in a handle 22 with which is associated the trigger grip 24 which operates the pawl. This construction permits advancement of rod 18 by manipulation of the trigger grip. It is a conventional construction and forms no part of the present invention except to illustrate one form of reservoir means which may be included in the presently described assembly.
A sleeve is attached to the discharge cap 12 and communicates with the reservoir. This sleeve may be formed with an outer section 32, in which there is an opening of enlarged cross section, and an inner section 34, in which the opening is restricted. A shoulder 36 accordingly is formed at the point of junction of these two sections.

ApIungerindicated :generally at 40 is mounted within the sleeve for longitudinal movement between advanced and retracted stations. This plunger is formed with an outer section 42 of'enlarged cross section and an inner section 44 of restricted cross section, thereby forming the shoulder 46 at the :point of junction of these two sections. Thus section 42 of the plunger slidably engages the inner walls of section 32 of-the sleeve, while section'44 of the plunger slidably engages restricted section 34015 the sleeve. 7
This construction enablespositioning of resilient means associated with the plunger for urging it normally to its extendedposition. :In the illustrated form such means comprise the coil spring 50 which encircles the restricted section 44 of the plunger and bears against shoulders 36 and 46/ 'De'tent means are provided for retaining plunger 40 within sleeve 30 while permitting its removal when such is desired. 7 The detent means employed may comprise a detent '52 which is removably mounted in a groove on the inner end. of plunger 40, engaging the inner end of sleeve 30 and preventing expulsion of the plunger from the sleeve by the force of-sprin-g"50.
'Guide means-also are employed for guiding the recipro'cating movement of plunger 40 within sleeve 30 and preventing its twisting. Although various forms of guide irieans may be employed for this purpose, the illustrated form comprises "a pin 54 extending through the upper end of sleeve 30 and entering a longitudinal slot '56 in the outer "surface of enlarged section 42 of 'plunge'r4ll." Y Y A dispensing head 58 is attaclredto plunger'40, preferab'ly being formed integrally'the re'wit'h. This head may assume a diversity bf forms, depending upon the intended application, the illustrated form being suitable "forthe application of plastic wood to plywood and lumber.
Conduit means are present for permitting passage of the plastic material from reservoir 10 through plunger 40 and dispensing head 58. Accordingly the plunger is provided with a longitudinal opening 60 which communicates with a registering or continuing opening in the dispensing head 58. At its inner end longitudinal opening 60 communicates with a transverse opening 62.
The latter opening is dimensioned and positioned in such a manner that when plunger 40 is in its advanced position transverse opening 62 is withdrawn into sleeve 30 in substantially sealing relation to the inner side Walls thereof (Figure 2). However, when the plunger is retracted, as when dispensing head 58 is pressed against the plywood or lumber surface, transverse opening 62 is projected within reservoir 10 so that the plastic material can flow through it as well as through longitudinal opening 60 and dispensing head 58. In this manner a simple but effective valve is provided for controlling the flow of the plastic material.
Operation The manner of operation of the presently described applicator is as follows:
First reservoir 10 is filled with plastic wood or other plastic material. This may be accomplished either by removing screw cap 12, or preferably by introducing the plastic material via the dispensing head and channels 60 and 62 by use of a pressure attachment. Notched rod 18 is withdrawn during the filling operation to provide the desired reservoir volume.
When it is desired to use the gun, trigger grip 24 is actuated. This advances rod 18 through action of the pawl on the trigger grip. Since the discharge end of the gun is sealed, advancement of rod 18 compresses spring 20 with little or no advancement of piston 16. A
3 r substantial discharge pressure thereby is applied to the plastic material contained within the reservoir.
To discharge the plastic material from the applicator, the dispensing nozzle is pressed against the area to which it is desired to apply thematerial. This action depresses plunger 40 against the resiliency of spring 50. As has been pointed out above, the plunger is depressed 'or retracted until transverse opening 62'therein is extended within reservoir 10. b
Piston 16, urged forwardly by compression spring 20, expresses the desired amount of plastic material through transverse opening 62, longitudinal opening 60 and dispensing head 58. Then when pressure on the dispensing head is released, spring 50 moves plunger 40 to the advanced position of Figure 2 in which transverse opening 62 is sealed off from the reservoir. The plastic material then may be spreador worked with the dispensing head 58 in the necessary or desired manner.
Thus it will be apparent tharbythe present invention I have provided an applicator for plastic materials such as plastic wood, which is free from clogging difiiculties and easy to clean. This is for the reason than an unobstructed passageway i atforded from reservoir to dispensing head 58, spring 50 being maintained separate from the material at all times. Furthermore, the applicator is easy to use and positive in its operation since it is actuated by a simple preliminary working of trigger handle 24. Thereafter, application of slight pressure to dispensing head 58 causes the emission of precisely the desired amount of plastic material. Still further, the apparatus is of simple construction, easily filled, and readily assembled and disassembled. 7
It is to be understood that the form of, my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken asa preferred I example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of part may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
An applicator for plastic materials comprising a reservoir for containing the plastic material, means for pressing the plastic material against an end of the reservoir, a sleeve attached to said end of the reservoir and communicating therewith, the sleeve having a longitudinal bore therethrough including a forward section of enlarged cross section and a rearward section of reduced cross section, a one piece plunger member including a forward enlarged section having the same cross section as the forward enlarged section of the bore and a rearward section having the same cross section as the rearward reduced section of the bore, the forward section of the plunger having a dispensing nozzle at its outer end, the rearward section of the plunger member extending into the reservoir, the rearward end of the plunger member having an annular groove therein removably receiving a ring-shaped abutment member positioned for abutment againstthe rearward end of the sleeve for restricting the forward movement of the plunger member, the plunger member having a longitudinal opening communicating at it forward end with the nozzle and at its rearward end with a transverse opening in the rearward section of the plunger member, said transverse opening being positioned forwardly of the annular groove and adapted upon rearward movement of the plunger member to communicate with the reservoir and upon forward movement of the plunger member to be sealed by the rearward reduced section of the said longitudinal bore, and resilient means between the plunger member and sleeve for normally urging the plunger member to its forwardmost position;
