Description

(No Model.)
0. I. HARTMAN.
RAIL JOINT. No. 274,593. Patented Mar.2.7 1883.
J] 1 I v L UNITED. STATES PATENT CHARLES F. HARTMAN, OF KELLERS CHURCH, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAlL-JOINT SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 274,593, dated March 2'7, 1883.
I Application filed June 28,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'l, CHARLES F. HARTMAN, of Kellers Church, county of Bucks, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to railjoints and it consists in clamps of peculiar construction, when arranged with a suitable chair, adapted to hold the two ends of the rails, one of said clamps or clamping-bolts being arranged over the joint, and in many details of construction, all of which are fully set forth in the following specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part thereof.
The object of my invention is to make a simple, cheap, and strong rail-joint, adapted to take the place of the loose fish-plates now in, use. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved rail-joint with a small portion broken out, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of same on line :0 w.
A A are the ends of two adjacent rails. They rest upon a chair, B, provided on one side with the curved flange G, which fits up around the lower part of the rails, terminating just below the head, as shown. This flange U is the full length oi'the chair B, but may be made shorter, if desired. The chair B is perforated in three '0." more places, Of, the perforations being preferably rectangular in sectional area, and
are arranged at right angles to the rails A,
ends F and the curved ends E, similarly shaped to the part or flange G of the chair, previously described. These curved parts 0 and E are somewhat varied to suit the cross-section of the rail used 5 but in all cases they are approximately of the shape shown in Fig. 2. These clamps D are tightened by nuts G, which, when screwed up tight, are prevented from turning by key B, made wedge shape, which are driven through slots fin the ends F. I do not limit myself to this particular manner of preventing unscrewing of the nuts, as a double or look nut might be used, or any of the well-known devices now in the market. One of these clamps D and its curved end E fits over the juncture of the two rail ends A, as shown in Fig. 1; and this is insured by a lug, J, cast in the chair or carriage B, which fits the notches A in the ends of the bottom flange or foot of the rails A, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The chair B is provided with flangesI,
notched, as at i, for the spikes by which it is secured to the ties, the said flanges running parallel with the rails.
I am aware of the patents granted to Mc- Donald, No. 42,098, and Hammersmith,-No. 199,437, and do not claim anything therein shown and set forth.-
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rail-joint, a chair upon which the adjacent ends of two rails rest, provided with a clamping-flange, in combination with clamping-bolts, the ends of said bolts and flange being shaped to conform to the sides of the rail, as shown, one of said clamping-bolts being arranged over the juncture of the two rail ends, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a rail-joint, the chair B, provided with flange 0, extending up to the head of the rail, and transverse apertures O, in combination with the rail ends A, bolts D, having curved ends E, and nuts Gr, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a rail-joint, the chair B, provided with clamping-flange 0, extending up to the railhead and fitting the sides of the rail. as shown, and transverse apertures or holes 0, in combination with rail ends A, clamping-bolts D, having threaded ends F and curved ends E to fit *the side of the rail, as shown, not G, and means to lock said nut in position when the rails are clamped, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a rail-joint, the chair B, provided with clamping-flange 0, lug J, and transverseholes G, in combination with rails A, having notches A in their bottom flanges, bolts D, having curved ends E, and means to cause the rail to be clamped between said ends E and flange G. V
5. In a rail-joint, the chair B, provided with clamping-flange 0, lug J, transverse holes 0', and notched flanges I, in combination. with rails A, having notches A in their ends, clamping-bolts D, having threaded ends F and curved ends E, and nuts G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
