Description
JQP. KENNEDY.
Method of Securing Iron Mouthpieces to Earthen Retorts.
Patented March 13, 186% W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. KENNEDY, OF TRENTON, NEWV JERSEY.
CLAY GAS-RETORT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,451, dated March 13, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. KENN DY, gas engineer, of the city of Trenton, county of Mercer, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Method of Securing Iron Mouthpieces to Earthen Retorts; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in firmly clasping the neck of the earthen retort at the back of the collar of the retort, with an iron yoke or bandthe same being in two pieces, so that it, (the yoke or band) can be easily attached or detached. The yoke or band is perforated with holes, corresponding with the holes in the fianch of mouthpiece for introducing bolts to secure the same (mouthpiece) to the face of retort, making a substantial and tight joint.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1, is a side view showing the mouthpiece connected to the retort by the yoke or band. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a view of yoke or band toward mouthpiece showing the lap of the circular piece, and the straight piece, also the bolt holes. Fig. 4;, is a rear View of the yoke .or band, showing a raised edge or rib, also the lap and the bolt heads.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, is the iron mouthpiece.
B, Figs. 1 and 2, is the flanch of mouthpiece.
C, Figs. 1 and 2, is the upper or circular part of yoke.
D, Figs. 1 and 2, is the straight or lower part of yoke.
E, Figs. 1 and 2, is the collar or earthen retort.
F, Figs. 1 and 2, is the body of earthen retort.
G, Figs. 1 and 2, are the bolts passing from yoke to mouthpiece. 4
H, Figs. 1 and 2, is the fianch on mouthpiece to receive lid.
I, Figs. 1 and 2, is the bell on mouthpiece for discharge pipe.
I do not claim the attaching of an iron mouthpiece to an earthen retort, as it is done by means of bolts inserted in recesses formed in the retorts; nor do I claim a cast iron face plate on the end of retort, to meet the iron mouthpiece fianch; but
That I do claim as my invention, is
The securing of the mouthpiece to an earthen retort by means of an iron yoke or band firmly clasping the neck of the earthen retort behind the collar, and having bolts on the outside of retort passing to the flanch or mouthpiece, thus securing the earthen collar between the mouthpiece, and the yoke or band, the whole being substantially as hereinbefore described.
JOHN P. KENNEDY.
