1 Claim. (Cl. 15--227) This invention relates to washing devices of the type used on the hand of an individual and also of the type used for washing the face or other parts of the body, and in particular a glove or mitten having a soft sponge rubber element secured in an opening therein and with said sponge rubber element mounted to be positioned in the palm of a hand on which the device is used.
The purpose of this invention is to incorporate a washing element in a plastic glove or the like wherein soap, toilet water, or other water conditioning agents may be retained in position to facilitate washing with the device.
Various type of gloves, mittens, and other devices have been provided for use on the hands of a person to facilitate washing and scrubbing, and Whereas such devices are useful in cleansing objects and the like, they are relatively harsh for washing the face and other parts of the body. With this though in mind this invention contemplates a comparatively soft element of sponge rubber or the like secured, preferably by heat sealing the edges, in a portion of a glove or mitten corresponding with the palm of the hand, whereby a small amount of soap may be retained on the face of the device so that the face or other parts of the body may be readily washed or cleaned.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for retaining a liquid holding element in the palm of a hand whereby the hand with the liquid holding element therein may be used for washing the face or other parts of the body.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for retaining soap or the like in the palm of a hand as the hand is used for washing the face and other parts of the body.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a soft soap retaining pad and means for mounting the pad in an opening in a glove or mitten wherein one portion of the pad is adapted for washing the face and another portion of the pad, which is of greater thickness than the former portion, is adapted for washing larger parts of the body.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plastic glove or mitten having a soap retaining pad in the palm to facilitate Washing, in which the device may be used repeatedly.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a glove or mitten having a soap holding pad in an opening in the palm section thereof in which the entire device is adapted to be sterilized. f
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a plastic glove or mitten having a small sponge rubber pad on one side and a larger sponge rubber pad on the opposite side in which the complete device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies an envelope shaped to conform to the outline of a hand and having an opening therein with the opening positioned to correspond with the palm ICC of a hand on which the envelope is positioned and a soft pad secured in said opening with the portion of the pad on one side of the envelope having a greater thickness than the portion on the opposite side.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the improved washing device with a sponge rubber pad in the portion thereof corresponding with the palm of a hand, and wherein the device is designed to form a mitten with a thumb stall suggested at one side.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the pad in the palm portion of the mitten shown in Fig. l showing a method of mounting the pad in the device and with the parts l shown on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the device.
Fig. 4 is a View similar to that shown in Fig. 1, showing a modication wherein the end of the device is straight, the thumb stall being omitted, and also in which the inner and outer sections of the pad are of the same diameter.
Fig. 5 is a cross section through the pad shown in Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a section showing a further modification wherein the corners of the sections of the pad are rounded.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts, the improved washing device of this invention includes an envelope of suitable plastic material having a front web 10, and a rear web 11, and a sponge rubber pad 12 is positioned in an opening 13 in the front web, as shown.
Holes 10a may be provided in kwebs 10 and 11 for hanging the washing device on a suitable hook or nail.
In the design s hown in Figs. l, 2 and 3 the pad is formed in two sections wherein a base 14, the diameter of which is greater than that of the outer portion 12,
Ais positioned in the envelope, and being of a larger diameter than that of the pad portion 12 provides a circular shoulder 15 upon which the edge of the front web or wall 10 is secured, preferably by heat sealing, as 'shown in Fig. 2.
With the parts positioned in this manner the small pad 12 is adapted for use in washing the face or other relatively small areas, and when it is desired to wash the body the envelope is turned inside out whereby the large pad or base 14 is extended for use. l
The edges of the front and rear webs or walls of the envelope are, in all designs, secured together, preferably by heat sealing, however, it will be understood that the parts may be connected or joined by other suitable means.
In the design illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 a pad 16, of sponge rubber or the like, is provided with an annular groove 17 in which an edge of a front wall or web 18 is secured, also preferably by heat sealing. The pad.
16 is also provided with a small outer portion and a larger inner portion, and the envelope, which is formed with a hanging hole 18a and with substantially square corners, is also adapted to be turned inside out so that the large section of the pad may be used for washing the body.
In Fig. 6, the washing device is provided with a pad 19, `similar to the pad 16, except that the outer portion is provided with an arcuate surface 20, having rounded corners 21, and the large inner portion 22 is provided 3 withan arcuate surface 23, and' this is also provided with rounded corners 24'. The" pad 19 is" provided with an annular groove 2S in which the edges of a front or web 26 is secured, also preferably by heattsealing.
The washing" pad orl disc may, therefore, be formed intwo' sections asl illustrated inV Fig'. 2, or" in one" piece, as shown in Figs. 5' and 6', and in either design the small pad is preferably used for washing the facev and the large pad or portion of the pad on the inside of the envelope preferably used for washing the body. When the pad is formed in two sections the sections are secured together, preferably by heat sealing.
While I' have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that' I do notl limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming Withinv the scope of the invention as defined' in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A reversible washing mitten comprising a mittenshaped enveloping body of plastic comprising spaced web portions with inturned edges sealed together along the opposed sides and one end thereof so as to maintain a space beteen the web portions, the edges of the web portions at the opposite end of the body being unattached providing an entrance opening into the space between the web portions for the hand of the user, one of said web portions having a circular central opening therein opposed to the palm of the hand of the user when worn, a sponge rubber pad with slightly convexed surfaces mounted in said opening, said pad having an annular groove in the peripheral edge thereof to one Side of the center of said peripheralV edge for receiving the edge wall of the circular opening so that a smaller mass of the pad with a smaller cleaning surface is disposed outside the web portion than the mass and cleaning surface inside the web portion, the space between the web portions being sufcient to permit the web portions to be turned inside out in order to reverse the positions of the cleaning surfaces of the pad.
