SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,511, dated March 27, 1883.

of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying-drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
This invention has forits objectto so arrange a.drawbar head thatit will retain the features for connecting with a common link-and-pin coupling of an adjoining car, and to be provided with adevice of simple and durable ccnstruction by which the cars will automatically couple or can be uncoupled without stepping.

Therefore my invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 represents an elevation of one end of a car that hasmy coupling device; Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the draw-bar and coupling linkand pin in position after uncoupling, and Fig. 3 a-similar section of the same in position after coupling. Fig. 4 is a plan of the draw-bar head and coupling device, and Fig. 5 a cross-section of the draw-bar on line :c x.

A denotes the bumper or draw-bar head having a funnel-shaped mouth, a, with an oblong opening for the link B, and a vertical hole for the couplingpin C, all of which is of any usual construction. Back ofthe coupling-pin hole the head A is vertically slotted for a block, D, that has a free vertical and longitudinal movement therein. This block D is flattened out at top and bottom ends, where it projects through the slots of head A and is laterally contracted again at its upper portion to provide shoulders b, while in its upper extremity is formed an eye or loop, c. Through this loop c is projected the hook-shaped crank E of a shaft, F, which is transversely pivoted against the end of the car-body, and has to its ends curved cranks d, by which the shaft F can be turned from either side ofthe car for raising or lowering the block D. Upon the rear portion of head A are secured two eye-lugs, e, between which is pivl oted an arnnf, that is slotted from its pivotal end to pass over block D and to rest upon' the shoulders b of same, and at its forward or swinging end such arm is bifurcated for embracing and supporting the coupling-pin C from under its collar in a manner that, with lifting-block` D.,the armfis swung upward, which again will raise the coupling-piu C. The middle portion of block D, that is inside of head A and projects forward close to the coupling-pin holes, is transversely concave-d in its center, and is vertically grooved out for inserting a link, h, that has an eye in its upper end for pivotally suspending it to a pin passed through the slotted top wall of head A. This link h is slotted vertically, and is coupled to block D inside of the groove of same by a pin, i, passed through a hole in such block and through the slot 'in link ii. The link h has a toe, j, that projects forward from out the block D, for forming a step for the point of the coupling-pin G to be supported thereon before the cars are to be coupled. The bumper or coupling head A forms a solid part of draw-bandi, the forward end of which is bored out longitudinally to form a socket for a spiral springm, and a guide for push-rod n, which latter, by the pressure of spring m, forces the block D forward in head A Vtoward the mouth of the same. With lifting-pin C the block D will be pushed forward by spring m, and will swing the link It forward for the toej to catch under the point of such pin and to hold it on its elevated position, as shown in Fig. 2, and as soon as link B ofthe car to be coupled enters the mouth of head A-and pushes the block D rearward the link h will be swung backward until the toej releases the pin C, which now will drop and couple the link, as shown in Fig. 3.
For eitheriuncoupling the cars or for raising the pin C to couple the cars the shaft F is turned from either side of the ar by one of its cranks d, when the crank E will lift block D, which again will turn the arm f, that will raise the coupling-pin C until its point is elevated above toej of link h, Vwhen the block D rectangular loop, o, through which are placed transversely two channel-bars, p, that havein- IOCl the rod s of which is rigidly secured to the end of the draw-bar. With a momentous heavy concussion of the cars the air captured in the cylinder L by piston M Awill be compressed and will form a cushion that will relieve the springs g.
As Will be noticed,the device thus shown does not derange the draw-bar head for con'- necting with any common car-coupling and has the advantage to be self-operating, for coupling the cars, while for uncoupling no person is required to step between the cars and endanger his life, and the construction and arrangement of the operating parts are verysimple and durable, and not liable to get out of order.
What I claim is- 1. A car-coupling consisting of draw-har head A, having flaring mouth a and hole for coupling-pin'C, and being provided with sWin ging link'h, having toej, with movable block D, and with swinging armf, al1 substantially as set forth, to operate as specified.
2. A- car-coupling consisting of draw-bar head A, having aring mouth ct and hole for coupling-pin C, and being provided with swinging link h, having toe j, with movable block D, spring m, and push-bar n, al1 constructed and arranged substantially as set forth, to operate as specified.
3. A carQcoupling consisting of draw-bar head A, having Haring mouth a and hole for coupling-pin C, and being provided with swinging link It, having toe j, with movable block D, swinging armf, spring m, and push-rod n, in combination with shaft F, having cranks E and d, the Whole being constructed and arranged to operate substan tially as described and shown.
