REEL FOR FLYING KITES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of lliiettersV Patent No. 274,490, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed February 3, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN C. GUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Reel for Flying Kites, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved reel 1o for flying kites, the same consisting of a reel for the kite-line which may, by means thereof, be easily manipulated, paid out, stopped, or wound, as the case may require, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a plan View of my improved reel or device for dying kites. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, illuszo tratin g the operation of the device.

A represents a frame,which may be twisted or formed from a single piece of wire, substantially as shown in `the drawings, by first twisting the central portion of the wire so as to form a handle, B, having an oblong loop, C, at its inner end. At the outer end of the handle B the ends of the wire are bent in opgo posite directions, so as to form arms D D, the ends of which are bent forwardly, so as to form brackets E E, upon the front ends of which eyes F F are formed. The eyes F F form bearings for a shaft, G, carrying a suitably-constructed reel, H, having flanges H2 H2 at the ends, and providedwith a loop or staple, I, to which the kite line or cord may be attached, as shown at J. The shaft G is provided with a crank, K, at one end, by means of which it may 4o be conveniently turned. At the other end of shaft Gr is formed an eye, L.
M- is a pin or key having a loop, N, by which t it is adjusted upon one of the arms or brackets E of frame A, upon which it may slide, so
as to be adjusted in the eye L of shaft Gr, or
removed from the same at will.
A. belt, 0, is passed through the loop C of the frame, and around the waist or body of the operator, to whom the device is thus secured in position for operation.
The method of using the device willV be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The device is held securely -5 5 in the proper position by the belt 0. While l the cord is being paid out the revolution of the reel may be checked by holding either the crank or one of the reel-dan ges with one hand. To stop the reel from revolving, the pin or key M maybe inserted in the eye N of the reel-shaft, and by withdrawing the pin or key and turning the crank the cord may be wound.
This device is simple, convenient, and useful for the purpose set forth. I would have it understood that the frame may be constructed of other material than wire, and in any suitable manner, without departing from the spirit of my invention. Likewise may the reel be constructed of wood, sheet metal, or other suitable material, and in any suitable manner.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a toy for flying kites, the combination of a suitable frame, a reel mounted in the same and having a shaft provided with an eye at one end, and a pin or key having a loop by which it slides upon one of the brackets of the frame, so as to be capable of entering the eye upon the reel-shaft, as set forth.
2. The herein-described twisted-wire frame,
having a handle provided with a loop at its Y inner end and brackets provided with eyes, in which is journaled a reel-shaft having at one end a crank and at the other end an eye adapted to receive a sliding pin or key, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the twisted wire frame, the reel mounted' in the same and having flanges at both ends, and a staple for the attachment of a vkite-cord, the' reel-shaft having a crank at one end and an eye at the other, and a sliding pin or key to engage the said eye, as set forth. 4. In a toy for dying kites, the combination of a frame having a handle provided with a loop at its inner end, a belt passed through said loop, and adapted to secure the frame to the body of the operator, a reel mounted in the said frame, a crank for turning the said reel, and a pin or key adapted to engage an eye at theend of the reel-shaft for the purpose of preventing the latter from revolving, as set forth.
