Application August 3, 1953, Serial No. 371,841
3 Claims. (Cl. 273105) This invention relates to games.
An object of this invention is to provide a game embodying a board having a plurality of openings with a catcher or net engaging about and projecting below the board for catching the playing pieces which are not caught and held in the openings.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a game, an improved playing piece which is substantially cone shaped which when thrown at the board assumes an inverted position in order to enter the openings in the board.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and de tails of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a game board constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of one of the game pieces.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a front elevation of a modified form of this invention.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary side elevation of the device shown in Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings, and first to Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, the numeral 10 designates generally a triangular game board which is provided with a plurality of openings 11. The board 10 is supported from a collapsible supporting structure embodying pairs of crossed legs 12 and 13 with one leg of one pair being connected to a leg of another pair by means of a horizontal connecting bar 14.
The connecting bar 14 engages beneath an end of the board 10 and is secured thereto by means of a clamp 15.
A net or receiver 16 which is formed of fabric is suspended beneath and engages about the margin of the board 10. The net 16 is mounted about a ring 17 which has a diameter substantially greater than the size of the game board 10 so as to thereby form a plurality of outer spaces 18 in which game pieces, as will be hereinafter described, may drop.
The ring 17 is secured to the horizontal connecting bars 14 by means of sleeves 19 which engage about the bars 14 and are secured to the ring 17 by fastening members 20. A plurality of game pieces, generally indicated at 21, are adapted to be used with the game board 10 and each game piece 21 is formed of a conical body 22 which is formed at the apex or lower end thereof with a ball 23.
A metal ball or weight 24 is embedded within the ball 23 so that the apex of the game piece, when thrown or cast toward the board 10, will gravitatingly swing downwardly. Each game piece 22 is provided with a rim 25 at the base or large end thereof which is larger in diameter than the diameter of each opening 11 so that the game piece 21 will not slip through the opening 11.
Each game piece is also provided in the body thereof with a pair of diametrically opposed elongated slits or openings 25 which provide a means whereby air may escape from the interior of the game piece when one game piece telescopes into another game piece. The slits also provide for gripping of the second game piece by the reflex action which occurs after the air escapes.
Referring now to Figures 6 and 7, there is disclosed a modified form of this invention wherein the game board 10 is pivotally secured to a cross-shaft 26 which is mounted in bearings 27. The bearings 27 are secured to the arms 28a of an inverted substantially U-shaped standard 28. The support 28 includes a score board 29 wherein the points of the game may be indicated.
A net 30 is secured to the standard 28 and to a substantially U-shaped frame 31, having arms 31a and bight 31b, and the arms 31a of the frame 31 are mounted on shaft 26 so that frame 31 may be raised upwardly to a playing position or may be collapsed to a substantially vertical inoperative position.
A pair of bracing bars 32 having right angular upper ends 33 are adapted to support the net 30 with the board 10 in a forwardly projected operative position. The lower ends of the bars 32 are engageable in the sockets 34 which are fixed relative to the supports 28.
In the playing of the game, the board is set up in a position inclined downwardly and forwardly with the base or large end of board 10 foremost. The playing pieces 21 are then cast toward the board 10 with the object being to drop the playing pieces 21 into one or more playing pieces which are already disposed in certain of the openings 11, or into selected ones of the openings 11.
The playing pieces are preferably formed out of rubber, so that they will bounce upon hitting of the board and will not be injured when passing into the openings 11.
What is claimed is:
1. A game board comprising a substantially triangular target board having a plurality of openings formed therein and extending therethrough to receive substantially conically shaped playing members thrown thereat, pairs of crossed leg members, a connecting bar integral with a leg member of each pair of said crossed leg members, means connecting the apex of said target board with one of said connecting bars, means pivotally connecting the base of said target board with the other of said connecting members, a ring member mounted on said con necting bars and surrounding said target board, a net fixedly connected with said ring and depending therefrom below said board to catch playing members which miss said target board, and said leg members serving as a support for the entire device.
2. A game board comprising a substantially triangular target board having a plurality of openings formed therein and extending transversely therethrough to receive substantially conically shaped playing pieces thrown thereat, a supporting frame for said board and connected with the apex and base thereof to hold said target board in elevated position, a net fixedly mounted on said frame and depending therefrom below said target board, and said net having portions thereof spaced laterally from and below all sides of said target board to catch playing members which miss said target board.
3. A game board as defined in claim 2, said supporting frame comprising a standard having an inverted substantially U-shaped configuration, a cross-shaft disposed between the arms of said inverted U-shaped standard and having its opposed ends pivotally secured thereon, a substantially U-shaped member having the arms thereof fixedly mounted on said cross-shaft, means mounted on said arms of said first U-shaped member for supporting the bight portion of said second U-shaped member in elevated position, and said target board having the apex thereof secured to said cross-shaft and the base thereof 5 secured to said arms of said second U-shaped member.
