SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'274,414, dated March 20, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that}, ZOTIQUE TREMBLAY, of Haverhill, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Axes, of which the following is a description sufliciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference be: ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective view of an ax provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a sectional side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, an end view, and Fig. 4 a view of the key and screw detached.

My invention relates more especially to means for securing the helve or, handle of the ax in I the head or ax proper; and it consistsin a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as
by which a more effective device of this charactor is produced than is now in ordinary use.
' The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood byall conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the ax, and B the helve. The helve is fitted to the eye of the ax in such a manner as to leave the space as above the same, its outer end, m, being slight- 1y wider or deeper than the width of the helve where it enters the eye at d. A wedge-shaped key, 0, formed as shown in Fig. 4, and provided with a notch or shoulder, f, is fitted to slide in the space as, and passing diagonally through the pole E, from its inner edge, there is a set-screw, D, adapted to engage the key, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper part of that portion of the helve in the eye of the ax, or from a to a, instead of being left oval or rounded in the usual manner, is planed down flat or level nearly in parallelism with the loogitndinal axial line of the helve, to form a seat for the key 0, the upper portion of the eye being also made flat to correspond therewith, as
seen at g in Fig. 3. The lower edge of the helve from t to o inclines downwardly, a slight shoulder or angle being formed at t, which prevents the helve from being forced forward out of position by the action of the screw on the key.
In the use of my improvement, the screw being turned back, the helve is inserted in the eye of the ax and the key 0 driven into the space 00, after which the screw 1) is turned in against the shoulder f, securing all the parts in proper position in a manner which will be readily understood without a more explicit description. The key may be driven into place and the screw turned in to secure it, or it may be forced in to its fullest extent by the screw alone, as most convenient. I g It will be obvious that the helve may be tightened in the ax at any time by simply turning in the screw; also, that the screw and key aiford a ready means of attaching the helve to the ax 'or detaching it therefrom, as occa- SIOD requires.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device for securing an ax to its helve, a set-screw passing directly in a diagonal direction through the poll of the ax from its inner end above the helve and-into its eye,'and a wedge-shaped key provided with a notch or shoulder on its upper side, said key being arranged in the inner end of the eye of the ax, above the helve, and said screw adapted to directly engage said key and force it forward into the eye, and thereby secure the helve, substantially as specified.
2.
