UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JOHN THOMAS, 0F CEDAR anrins, IOWA.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,412, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed January 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, JOHN THOMAS, of Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new Improvement-in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereinvention the frame consists of two sides connected at one end by a bar to which the tug is attached, at the other end the two sides curved outward and connected bya bar outside the trace, combined with a ton gne-slide which is of loop shape, the frame extending through the tongue-slide, one bar of the slide on the outside carrying the tongue, the bar on the inside standing forward of the tongue-bar, so that the tongue slide may be turned forward, tipping the tongue inward and out of the way of the trace. That construction shows a loop exposed at each side of the trace or strap which may be engaged with the buckle.
The object of my present invention is to construct the tongue -slide so that this exposure of thetwo sides may be avoided and a lighter and neater appearance be given to the buckle; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter'descrihed, and more particularly recited in the claim.
As in my previous patent, the frame of the buckle is composed of two sides, A A, connect ed at their forward end by a bar, B, to which the tug O is attached, and at their other end by a. bar, 1), the two sides turned outward, as seen in Fig. 2, so as to bring the rear bar, D, into a plane outsidepf the frame or tug-bar, as shown. The tongue-slide consists of a bar, E, in length substantially the width of the inside of the frame, and so as to stand free between the two sides, as seen. in Fig. 1. On the forward edge of this bar, andat each end, is a lug, a, projecting toward each side of the frame, and so as to lie upon the outer surface of the frame, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, and on the opposite edge of the frame, and at each end, is a lug, 1), extending in the same direction as the lugs a, but distant therefrom greater than the thickness of the frame, and so as to lie upon the inside of the frame, as seen in Fig. 2, and stand forward of the lugs 0t. On the outside of the bar E is a stud, d, which forms the tongue to engage the trace or strap, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 2. This construction dispenses with the connection outside the frame in my previous patent and simplifies the construction of the slide. It is placed upon the frame, as seen in Fig. 1, and when so placed is ready for use. To adjust the trace the slide is turned forward, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 2, which brings the tongue out of the way of the trace, and when the trace or strap is properly adjusted, then the slide is returned to bring the tongue into proper position for engagement. By this'constructionl not only simplify the construction of the tongue-slide, but make it more convenient for I manipulation, and dispense with the exposed outside connections around the frame.
I do not claim, broadly, a buckle provided with a slide having a stationary tongue arranged thereon to enter the trace or strap and be drawn toward the stationary bar of the frame, as such, I am aware, is not new; but 7 What I do claim is- The herein-described buckle, consisting of the frame A AB D, the sides curved outwardat the rear end, combined with the tongue slide E, constructed with the stud at, its two ends with lugs a. a on the one edge and b b on the opposite edge, the said lugs distant from each other greater than the thickness of the frame, the said lugs a a on one edge resting upon the outside of the two sides of the frame, and the other lugs, 1211, upon the back side ofthe frame, substantially as described.
. JOHN THOMAS.
