SPECIFIUATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,410, dated March 20, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, NAPOLEON B. TERRY, of Pensacola, in the county of Escambia and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Upon asuitabletruck of wheels, A, and along frame, B, and at the rear end thereof, over the hind axle,lerect thetelescopic elevators of, say, three tubes, 0 G 0 and the rod, pole, or tube D, with a cage or car, E, on the top of the latter, and guys F, attached to the top of the bottom section, 0, and to the extension-braces G G, which, in the working condition of the apparatus, are shifted from the position represented in Fig; 1, where they are disposed in the arrangenient for transportation, around to the lateral extension from the sides of the truck, as shown in Fig. 2, each way therefrom, to stay the elevator, the said extension-braces G G and frame B, at B, beingprovided with vertically-adjustable caster-rollers H, on which to swing and be supported, the rollers'H on braces G G being fitted to the outer end of each section of the said braces, and each roller H being fitted in the forked lower end of a vertically-sliding standard, I, working in a tubular stock, J, attached to and projecting down ward from the said braces and frame, and having a screw, K, to raise and lower them, the screw being provided with a hand-wheel, M, for turning it. The said extension-braces G G are hinged at O to the strong uprights N, at the hind end of the truck, and alongside of the elevator, to be swung out, as above stated, and when the short endsmeet behind the elevator they will be lapped and firmly fastened together by clipsP or other approved devices.
The guys F, that are attached to the extension-braces G, are fitted, through rings or eyestuds F, to pay out or haul in as the brace is extended or contracted, and belaying-pins Q are provided for making them fast.

The interior arrangement of the sections of the telescopic tubes is represented in Fig. 3, wherein it will be seen that the bore of the upper end of section 0, out of which the section 0 works, is a. little smaller than below, fortning a shoulder at a, and the lower end of section 0 is as much larger below said shoulder, forming a shoulder, 11, on it, which shoulders form stops to prevent the section 0 from being forced out at the top of section 0. The arrangement is similarin the other sections. In case it may not be desired to raise the cage E to the full height of its range, a chain may be attached to it and to the truck below to hold it at the desired height.
It will be noticed that the caster-rollers H are mounted in their stocks-J, so that when the arms G G are swung out from the sides of the truck, with their rollers H adjusted to the ground for support of the arms, the forward roller H on frame B may be forced down by its screw K to lift the forward truck-wheels A of? the ground, so as to afford a quicker ad justment of the tube end of the apparatus in proper position to elevate cage E to any desired point, or to move the apparatus up to ward or from a building when the tubes are extended, so that when the lower part of a building is afire the apparatus can be adjusted ing-screws, by means of which the ladder may fore do not claim such invention.

Guyropes F may also be provided, connecting the head of second section, 0, with the truck or any suitable point below, for further steadying the telescopic tubes when the apparatus is in use.
It is to be understood that the elevator and cage are to be of material that will resist the tire.
I am aware that a fire-escapeladderhas been mounted on a turn-table provided with adjustbe leveled and firmly supported, and I there- Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a portable fire-escape extension-elevator, the extension-braces Gr G, pivoted to the standards N byjoints O, and arranged to lap each other, and provided with connecting clips P, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the extensionbraces G G, pivoted to the standards N, and arranged to lap each other, of the rollers H, the standards I, the stocks J, and the adjusting-screws K, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of extension-braces G G with a portable extension fire-escape, said extension-braces being pivoted to the posts N, and provided with supporting-posts R and hook-arms S, substantially as specified.
4. The guys F, in combination with the extension-elevator section 0, and the section G of the extension-brace, and being connected to the latter by theeye-stud F and belaying-pin Q, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of lateral extensionbraces G G and rollers H with the truck of a portable extension-elevator, said rollers being arranged to roll forward and backward along with the truck-wheels, substantially as specified.
