SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,403, dated March 20, 1883.

T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. SPOONER, of Buchlin, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Metallurgic Furnace; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- to Figure 1 is a side elevation of the furnace and connections. Fig. 2is a vertical cross-sectional view of the furnace and portions of the connections. Fig. 3 is an elevation with forcepumps and condensers removed. Fig. 4 is a 1 5 horizontal cross-sectional view on the line at a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan of the bottom of the furnace. Fig. 6 is a view of the central partition removed.
The object of my invention is to provide a furnace for metallurgic purposes wherein the draft shall be direct from its point of entrance to the point of exit; the draft shallbe in a seiies of jets given substantially a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body of the furnace; the operations of smelting and refining can be carried on conjointly or separately, andwhcrein the condensation of the fumes and gases is greatly facilitated; and to this end the invention consists in novel features of con- 0 struction and combination of parts, all as willv be hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims hereto annexed.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to 3 5 describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is the body of the furnace, which is lined with fire-brick sustained by a series of shelves, c a; and B is a 4.0 central flue at the top, for the exit of the products of combustion.
Dividing the body A on a central vertical line is a hollow partition or diaphragm, 0, contracted at its center and widening at the edges,
5 as seen in Fig. 4. A continuous water-circulation is kept up in this hollow partition by means of water-pipes b b, projecting through the bottom of the furnace. Doors D D are pro- 1 vided on both sides of the furnace for chargin g the furnace, so that access may be had on each side of the diaphragm or partition 0. Openings through the walls of the furnace and spouts d d at varying heights are provided for drawing off the slag or the molten metal at various elevations. The bottom of the furnace, 5 shown in this instance to be conical, though it need not be so shaped, is hinged to the body of the furnace at e e by means of a pin or bolt, e, w-hereby the bottom may be opened or entirel y removed at will.
On the inner surface of the bottom are concentric air-pipes E, provided with a series of perforations, f f, and connecting exteriorly witha blast-pipe, F, communicating with a fanblower or other desirable means for forcing 6 air. When closed the bottom of the furnace is secured by a latch or catch, 9.
The central flue, B, passes into a cross-flue, G, and above it, where it terminates in the dome G, provided with a cover, It, which may be removed when firing up the furnace, but which normally tightly covers said dome. One end of cross-flue Gr is provided with an inwardly-openin g valve, t, controlled by a spring, 6, which opens and relieves the fines should the exhaust-pump create too great a vacuum.
In the end of cross-flue Gr opposite to the valve 2' are inserted pipes H H, leading to air or exhaust pumps I I, which are near the condensing-chambers K K. Between the ends of pipesl-I H and the flue B a water-pipe, L, enters cross-flue G and terminates in a rose or spraying device, 1. (See Fig. 2.) Water under pressure is conveyed through pipe L, and while the furnace is in operation a spray ofwater is continuously thrown in line G across the line of travel of the products of combustion. The pipes H conduct the fumes and gases to exhaust-pumps I, which, with the well-understood arrangement of valves, forces said fumes 0 and gases, with a positive high velocity, through pipes N into the water in the condensing-tanks K K.
If found desirable, the upper side of crossflue G may be tapped at n, and a pipe, M, in- 5 troduced to carry the most volatile or lightest gases, which are next to the upper surface of the flue, back into the furnace to aid combustion.
It is obvious that the furnace on one side of the partition may alone be charged with ore of the precious metal, fuel,.and flux for smelting, and that as the smelting goes on the molten metal will flow below the partition, through the opening between the partition and thebottom of the furnace, into that half of the furnace having no charge of ore in it. The jets of air or other oxidizing medium, passing up through the molten metal on the side without the charge of ore, oxidizes or burns out all impurities and base metals. Thus it will be seen that the operations of smelting and refining are carried on in the same furnace, the
purer bullion being drawn from the opening and spout d or d from time to time.
