Description

y 1956 N. J. WATERBURY COMBINED NECKTIE AND RETAINING TAB Filed Dec. 4, 1955 INVENTOR NELSON J WATERBURV BY y ATTORNEYS United States Patent COMBINED NECKTIE AND RETAINING TAB Nelson J. Waterbury, New York, N. Y. Application December 4, 1953, Serial No. 396,108 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-145) This invention relates to apparel and more particularly to a necktie provided with means for maintaining the same in substantially normal position.
Heretofore, conventional four-in-hand neckties when in place on the neck of the wearer have been allowed to swing freely and as a consequence, the free ends of such neckties frequently get in the way or become tangled in adjacent objects and in order to overcome this inconvenience various types of clips, pins and the like, in the form of costume jewelry have been provided. While these pins or clips are usually sufiicient to serve the purpose, nevertheless, they are inconvenient and frequently become lost, also these pins or clips are relatively expensive and several different types and styles are needed in order to match or blend with the particular suit being worn.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a necktie having an integral means which may be attached to the shirt of the wearer in order to maintain the necktie in substantially normal position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of necktie having a tab attached to the forepart thereof and extending through an aperture in the tail part, such tab being detachably secured to the button on the shirt of the wearer in order to maintain the tie in substantially normal position.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a necktie having a tab integrally attached thereto, such tab being utilized to maintain the tie in substantially normal position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a necktie having a retaining tab formed of matching material and color, such tab being secured to the shirt of the wearer in order to maintain the tie in substantially normal position.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing herein:
Fig. 1, is a front elevational view of a shirt with a tie constructed in accordance with this invention in place thereon;
Fig. 2 an enlarged front elevational view showing the tab attached to the tie and the manner of use thereof including a fragmentary portion of the shirt to which the tab is attached;
Fig. 3 a top plan detailed view of the tab prior to securing the same to a tie;
Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modified form of the invention.
With continued reference to the drawing there is shown in Fig. 1 a shirt having the conventional collar 11 and buttons 12 which are utilized to secure the shirt 10 in place on the wearer. A necktie 13 constructed in accordance with this invention may be tied with the usual four-in-hand knot 14 and the tie 13 includes a forepart 15 and a tail part 16.
The forepart 15 is provided with the usual seam 17 and secured Within this seam by stitching or in any other desired manner, is an elongated retaining tab 18. As shown in Fig. 3 tab 18 may comprise an elongated portion 19 of suitable material, such as non-elastic or elastic tape, and color to match the tie 13 and the tab 18 is attached to the forepart 15 of the tie by having a portion 20 of the tab 18 stitched within the seam 17. However, if desired, the tab 18 may be secured to the forepart 15 of the tie 13 by a suitable adhesive or may be secured in place by any desired fastening means. The opposite end of the tab 18 is provided with a buttonhole 21, the purpose of which will be presently described.
The tail part 16 of the tie 13 is provided with an elongated aperture 22 which is located substantially opposite the point of attachment of the tab 18 to the forepart 15 when the tie is in normal tied condition. The aperture 22 is slightly longer than the width of tab 18 and as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in the normal operation of the tie of this invention, the elongated portion 19 of the tab 18 extends through the aperture 22 in the tail part 16 and the buttonhole 21 in the tab 18 is detachably secured to one of the buttons 12 of the shirt 10. Obviously, tab 18 may be secured at any desired location on the forepart 15 of the tie 13 and it is only necessary that the aperture 22 in the tail part 16 be located substantially opposite this point of attachment when the tie is in normal tied condition in order that the elongated portion of the tab 19 of the tie 18 may extend through the aperture 22 without causing undue wrinkling or puckering of the tie 13. Also the tab 18 must be attached to the forepart 15 of the tie 13 at a suitable location to be in substantial alignment with a button 12 of the shirt 10 when the tie is in normal tied condition. The tab 18 will only be of sufficient length to permit convenient fastening of the same to the shirt 10 and this length will not be sufiicient to permit tab to protrude to either side of the tie 13 when the same is in normal position on the wearer.
In Fig. 4 there is shown a modified form of the invention in which the tab 18 is secured to the forepart 15 of the tie and extends therefrom with the sides of the tab in a substantially horizontal plane. The tail part 16 is also provided with a plurality of apertures 22 in order to facilitate use of the device when the location of the knot in the tie is changed.
It will be seen that by the above described invention there has been provided a convenient and inexpensive means for maintaining a tie in normal position on a wearer and a means which cannot be lost as would be the case with clips or pins and furthermore, no additional securing means other than the normal buttons on the shirt of the wearer is required to suitably maintain the tie in position.
It would be obvous to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawng and described in the specificaton but only as indicated in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A combined necktie and retaining tab comprising a forepart, a tail part, a longitudinal stitched seam on the rear side of said forepart, an elongated tab having one end disposed within said seam and vertically stitched to the rear side of said forepart by said seam stitching and extending substantially at right angles thereto, a horizontal button hole in said tab adjacent the free end thereof, an elongated vertical aperture in said tail part of a length greater than the width of said tab and disposed substantially opposite the point of attachment of said tab to said forepart when said tie is tied whereby said tab may extend through said aperture and be detachably secured to a button on the shirt of the wearer to maintain said tie in substantially normal position.
