UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
HENRY KOCH, OF HILTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO B'. F.
SCHERTZ, OFv SAME PLAGE.
WAGON-TONGUE.
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,842, dated March 20, 1883.
` Application iiled April 1B, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HEnRY KOCH, of Hilton, in the county ot Tazewell, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Wagon- Tongne; and I do herebyT declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which the ligure represents a plan ofthe same.
The object of this invention is the construction of a wagon-tongue which, when used with a three-horse whiftletree, shall permit the said triple-tree to be attached in the center line of the hounds ofthe Wagon and said tongue still be midway between two of the horses. This construction entirely prevents any side draft to the team. When it is attempted t0 use three horses abreast in connection with an ordinary wagon-tongue, the center horse gets badly rubbed by the pressure of the tongue against his side. I have constructed my wagon-tongne in such `a way that it rests midway between the center horse and right-hand one when used with an ordinary three-horse whifletree, though it can, of course, be made as easily to go between the center and left-hand horses.
H represents the forward axletree of a. wagon, and H 1I the hounds.
The continuation D of the tongue A is bent ot at an angle tov form one side ot' the holdingframe D B C, being cut away at N to lessen the amount ofbending and to carry said tongue A farther from the centerline of the hounds H. By center line of the hounds I mean the line passing through the hounds perpendioular to the axis H' at its center. The forward ends of the bars B and U ofthe holding- 4o frame D B O are fastened together and to the tongue A by one or two bolts, I. The brace E presses apart the rear ends of the holding-frame bars B C D to lit the angle between the two beams H H of the wagon-hound. The center bar, B, serves simply to strengthen the holding-frame, and maybe dispensed with by titting a square block between the front part ot the bar C and the tongue A.
I make two boltholes, L L, one at end of bar B and the other in C, to adapt the Wagontongue for use with di'erent makes oi' threehorse Whiftletrees.V
The wedge Gr serves two purposes: first, to prevent having to bend so far the end D of the tongue A, and, second, by moving it toward or from the end of the hound-bar H, to itthe wagon-tongue to different widths ot' hoiinds. When adjusted, a. screw or two, aided by the bolt F, hold it in place.
The holding-frame of the tongue is pivoted to the hound by the bolt F, as in other constructions.
What l claim as my invention, and for which l desire Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
The tongue A, cut away and bent at N, in combination with the bars B C, bolt I, brace E, and wedge G, substantially as and for the purpose specified. f'
In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1882.
