SHE ET METAL JOINT FOR OIL CANS AND OTHER ARTICLES. No. 274,271. Patented MarfZO, 1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN K. OHAGE, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ANNIE CARR, OF YONKERS, N. Y.
SHEET-METAL JOINT FOR OIL-CANS AND OTHER ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,271, dated MarchQO, 1883.
Application filed February 8, 1883. (No model.)
Toall whom it may concern y Be itknown that I, JouN K. (JHACE, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Joints for Oil-Cans and other Articles, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention consists in a joint of a certain novel form or construction, hereinafter described, for uniting a flanged sheet-metal ring to an attaching-piece,also of sheet metal, the
latter serving to connect the ring to an oil-can or other article, whereby such union can be efi'ected without the use of solder.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a vertical cross-section, showin gthe joint as used to connect a flanged screw-ring to an oil-can, this figure showing also a screw-cap combined with the screwring. Fig. 2 is a similar section, showing the jointas it appears Fig. 3 shows the completed joint as applied to a plain ring.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designatesthe sheet-metal ring having a flange, B, on one edge, and O the at taching-piece by which the ring is connected to the top of anoil-can or other article. This attach'ing piece 0 consists of a disk of sheet metal, which is first stamped to the shape shown in Fig. 2-that is to say, it is provided with a groove or furrow, 8, adapted to receivethe flange B of thering. One side of this groove is then forced over upon the flange B by suitable dies or squeezers in form of a double lap, 0, Fig. 1, and the flange being firmly held or confined by this lap, an effective joint is produced between the ring and attachingpiece without the use of solder.
When my invention is applied to oil-cans, the attaching-piece G is made of taggers tin, so called,or other soft metal, which may be cut out in the center in a well-known manner for access to the can through the usual opening, D, and in that event the ring A is screwthreaded to receive a screw-cap, E; but it should be understood that the joint is equally adapted to various other articles, and amongothers to lamps or lanterns, in which the base or pedestal is made of sheet metal, the essential feature being the lap 0, formed by doubling the attaching-piece upon the'flange of the ring. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sheet-metal joint herein described, consisting of the Eangedring A and the attachingpiece 0, having the double lap 0 formed therein to engage the flange of the ring between itself and the body of the attaching-piece, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
