UNITED y STATES PATENT CEEICE.
SAMUEL C. VISER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
sTocK-CAR.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,240, dated March 20, 1883.l Application led July 20, 1882. (No model.)
To allwhom it may concern Beit known that I, SAMUEL G. WIsER, a citizen f the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ot' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Cars, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to that class of stock-v cars which are arranged for feeding and -wa tering the stock during transportation; and it particularly relates, in part, to improvements on the stockcar for which which I have previously made application for patent, which application was allowed May 4, 1882, Serial N o. 57,824.
My invention consists in tertain'cor'nbina-` tions and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, with reference tothe ao- -companying drawings, in which zo Figurel is aside elevation of a stock-car supplied with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the sa me, and Figs.
3 to 8, inclusive, detail views of some of the various parts more particularly hereinafter rei'erred to.
Similar parts are represented by similar letters throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A A represent a stockcar provided on each side with a series of buckets, B, arranged to -be turned in or out by` means of racks c and pinions p, and having water-pipes P leading thereto, in the manner and4 for the purpose more fully set forth in the application hereinabove referred to.
C is a partition or stall, hung by ropes r :1"
from a shaft, s, journaled in suitable bearings near the top of the car, and provided at either or both ends with cranksf, by means of which the ropes r may be wound up, drawing the partitions up to the top of the car, where they are hooked up, as shown in Fig. 7, by hooks h. These partitions arel for the purpose of separating the stock when the car is filled, and for this purpose there will he used a number of partitions equal to the number of buckets, less one, which are to be'let down between the stock when in place, but drawn up o'ut ofthe way, as before described, when unloading or when the car is to be used for otherpurposes.
Upon the top of the car, along each side, is
abox or trough, D, from which lead a number `so arranged that one bucket and partitions, and hooks It It,
troughs are to contain the feed, and they are each provided with a slide,'b, having a number of openings, b', (see Fig. 8 for detail,) equal to the number of spouts d, and are connected at one end to a hand'lever, E. Ifit is desired to feed the stock, the slide b, by means of the of pipes or spouts, d, to 'the buckets B. The
hand-lever E, is drawn along until the openings b coincide with the mouths of the'spouts d and the feed runs down through said spouts into'the buckets B.
The buckets B, instead of bein g secured rigidly to the rods a, as heretofore, I make detachablev by forming a socket, e, on the bucket B, which tits on the square ende of the rod a. (See Fig. 6.) By this arrangement, upon raising the bucket slightlyit may be detached from the rod a or replaced thereon-at will. A' The frame F, which fitsain the doorway, is or two may be used therein, as thev case may require.
0n the end of each of the water-pipes P is Va valve, u, provided with a float, o, (see Fig. 6,) which, when the bucket B is filled to a certain depth, closes the valve and shuts off the water, thus preventingthe buckets from overflowing on the car-tloor.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new and original, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a stock-car, the bucket B, provided with a socket, e, in combination with a rod, a, having square end e', substantially as described and shown.
2. In a stock-car, the combination of the r0- tatable buckets B, troughs D, having spouts d, leading to said buckets, and slides b, having notches b', and hand-lever E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. Ina stock-car, the combination ot' the vertically-movable partitions C, shafts s, having cranks ff, ropes r r, connecting said shafts all su bstantiall y as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
SAMUEL O. WISER. Witnesses:
'GLACK S. HARRISON,
FRANK JOHNSON.
