Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS P. PFAU, OF LANSINGBURG, NEW YORK.
CHECK-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,222, dated March .20, 1883.
' Application filed December 9, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS P. PFAU, of,
La'isingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Open-Way Check-Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which-- I Figure l is a section through my improved check-valve and its box. Fig. 2 is a crosssection through the valve-box and dovetail connection for the pivoted valve-arm, the retaining-plate and valve being removed. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the slotted retainingplate. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the valve and its hinged arm and retaining-plate detached from the valve-box.
This invention relates to improvements on.
stood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawlugs.
A designates the valve-box, which is interiorly screw-threaded, as shown at a a, to receive coupling-pipes, and which is provided with an inclined interiorly screw-threaded'col' 1ar,A, to receive a screw-cap, B. Inside of the box A are cast two lugs, b b, forming a dovetail groove, also an annular valve-seat, c, on which is an adjustable swinging cupped valve, 0. It will be seen that the water or steam will take a direct or straight course through the valve-box with little or no interruption.
D designates a dovetail head, which is adapted to fit snugly in the recess formed by the lugs b b, and to be held down tightly there in by the screw-cap B, when the latter is screwed home, as shown in Fig. 1. The head D isformed with two ears, (1 d, which are perforated laterally to receive a pintle, a, which forms a hinge-joint for a slotted arm, E. This pintle a is held in place bythe lugs b b, as
shownin Fig. 2. The slotted or bifurcated arm E receives through it the centralstud,
E by means of a screw. f. The plate F is slotted transversely to receive the valve-stud c, and it is slotted longitudinally to receive the neck of the screwfiand to allow said plate to be adjusted endwise when this screw is loosened. The slotted plate F is also constructed with a lug, g, which prevents downward displacement of the valve 0.
It will be seen from the above description that the valve 0 is free to vibrate about its pintle, and that the head D is held in its place by means of the cap B of the valve-box, by removing which cap the said head, with the arm, the slotted plate, and the valve, can be readily taken out of the valve-box. It will also be seen that by means of the slotted plate,
that wear of the impinging faces of the valve and seat can be compensated for.
Having described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1si 1. The open-way valve-box provided with lugs b b, and aninclined valve-seat, the valve (1,.the hinged arm thereof, and thehead D, held down by the cap of the valve, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. 'lhevalve-box provided with lugs 11 b, in combination with the eudwise-adjustable slotted plate F, the set-screw thereof, the hinged arm E,retnovable from the valve-box, the valve 0, with its headed stud, the head D, and the holding down cap B, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
3. In combination with a valve-box having an obliquely-arranged valve-seat and a hinged valve which is adjustable by means of a late, F, and set-screw f, the removable bead D, and the holding-down cover therefor, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in' the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
