UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
WILLIAM WV. MGLELLAN, OF NEWCASTLE, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.
TELEGRAPH AND SEMAPHORE SIGNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,212, dated March 20, 1883.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. MGLELLAN,
a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Newcastle, in the county of Northumberland, Province of New Brunswick, Canada,
have invented a new and useful Telegraph and Semaphore Signal, of which the following'is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is a side view illustrating a modification. Fig. 3 is a a bottom view of part of Fig. I, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line at a, Fig. 2. a
Corresponding parts are denoted by like letters of reference. I
This invention relates to telegraph or semaphore signals for railroads, &c., and has for its objects to simplify and to cheapen the construction of such signals, and at thesame time secure the utmost promptness of action and reliability. 7 p r It consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in z 5 the claim.
In the drawings, A represents a bar, for which, as in Fig. 2, a vertical post or upright may be substituted when occasion shall demand. Said bar or post has bearings for a vertical shalt, B, upon which the signal-board O and lantern D are secured. Shaft B has a cross arm or lever, E, one of whose extremities is connected by a rod, F, with a bent lever, G, one arm of which is loaded with the The cord I, by which the signal is operated, may, as in Fig. 2,be attached to the unloaded arm of lever G, to which the rod F is also con nected, or it may, as in Fig. 1, be attached to one end of the cross arm or lever E. The bent lever G may be pivoted upon a stud, J, as in Fig. 2, or its two arms may, as in 1 lg. 1, be joined by a short axle under the bar A. A suitable stop, K, Fig. 4, is provided, which per- 4 5 mite the. signal to turn just ninety degrees, or l'romthepoint of safety to that of danger,
Application filed October 12, 1882. (No model.)
and vice versa. The operating-cord is keptiu place by suitable e5 es or holders, and when a change of direction is made a pulley is used to guide said cord. A pulley, L. is also arranged at the side of the horizontal bar A, so that a cord may pass over it with a weight suspended to take the place of the parts F G H, if at any time this should be deemed preferable.
The signal-board is adjustably attached to 5'5 2 the shaft B, so as usuallyto rest at safety or danger, as may be required, and the change from that position is made by pulling the cord I. This may be done by any of the mechanical devices now in use, either to the full swing of ninety degrees or to a less angle, so as to indicate caution. Supposing the signal to be originally set so as to indicate danger, the pull of the cord will lift the weight while it changes the signal, and the 6 action of the weighton release of the cord will instantly set it as it was before.
This device is exceedingly simple, having no springs, cog-wheels, or other intricate mechanism, and it will operate successfully with out danger of being disabled or getting out of order. Y I am aware of the English Patent No. 2,258 of 1858, and I disclaim the construction and arrangement of parts therein shown.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with a bar or post, A, of the vertical shaft B, having lever E, thesignalboard 0 and the lamp D, both secured upon the said vertical shaft- B, one above the other, the bent lever G, having weight H, the con necting-rod F, stop K, operating-cord I, and suitable guide-pulleys, as and for the purpose set forth. 8
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my siguatur'ein presence of two Witnesses. WILLIAM WILKINSON MOLELLAN. Witnesses:
CHAS. S. HOWARD, Geo. P. THOMAS.
