Y., assignor to Schreiber & Goldberg, a firm This invention relates to improvements in pressing and shaping apparatus for multiple-ply fabric articles, and particularly relates to pressing apparatus for speedily and efiiciently pressing and shaping to proper form manufactured fabric articles, such as collars and cuffs, lapels and similar garment parts of the type having multiple plies of fabric that have been initially operated upon and sewed together.
It is Well known that, owing to the large amount of material that of necessity must be turned, for example, into the point of a collar a lump or bulge is formed in the point which is accentuated when the collar is ironed. Such bulges may occur prior to stitching or may occur after stitching but they are particularly noticeable in soft collars attached to shirts, the tops of which have been run stitched, hand-turned and finally stitched.
It is desirable, of course, by shaping and pressing such articles to produce therein edges that are sharply defined.
One of the objects of the present invention is to improve pressing and shaping apparatus of the type specified to enable the uniform applica ion of a high degree of pressing power to a movable pressing member to provide speedy and efiicient pressing and shaping of folded fabric portions such as the turned edges of manufactured fabric articles whereby in a single pressing operation the edges of such folded portions will be pressed into a welldefined shape.

Another object of my invention is to provide an improved apparatus with guiding means for so applying increased power to the movable pressure member whereby the multiple-ply fabric articles will be pressed by such movable pressing member uniformly throughout the entire surface of said fabric article with an equal degree of pressure and without any surface wrinkles, indentations, grooves or the throughout the entire body of the fabric.
Another object of this invention is in a pressing apparatus of the type specified to utilize a stationary, smooth. base plate, preferably heated by electricity, which is provided with one or more article-receiving fissures, each comprising a fiat pressing face having the shape of the article to be pressed and partially enclosed by angularlypositioned edge-defining members having side edges extending perpendicularly above said pressing face, and thus to form between such edge members an angulariyshaped die space having perpendicular edge portions, a coacting pressing member having a shape similar to said die-space and movable up and down therein between said- Patent edge-defining members, said coacting pressing member having edges disposed vertically in perpendicular relationship to said pressing face and fitting closely adjacent to said edge-defining members, said die-space having at one edge an entrance portion between said pressing face and movable coacting pressing member for projection edgewise into said die-space of an article to be subjected to pressure and shaped, a shiftable article-carrying blade of similar shape to said die-space and movable to shift through said entrance portion of said die-space beneath the said coacting pressing member and to carry said article in mounted position thereon into a position with the marginal edges of said article-abutting said edge-defining mem bers of said die-space, said article-carrying blade being retractable from the article when the latter is positioned in said die-space, and means for applying pressure to said coacting movablepressing member to press said article flatwise in said die-space between the movable pressing member and said stationary pressing face comprising a manually-operable'lever combined with a pair of hinged levers having a power-increasing toggle-joint for moving said coacting movable pressing member uniformly into said die-space and permitting ready retention of said parts in pressing engagement with each other.
Another object of my invention is to utilize a togglejoint having its central elbow-like hinge in a pair of hinged levers at the junction thereof with an upwardly-directed foot-actuated lever through which power is applied, said pair of hinged levers having a pivotal connection at one end With-said movable pressing member and at the opposite end having a pivotal connection with a stationary pivot, whereby I am enabled to channel the upwardly-directed movement of said foot-actuated lever which moves in a substantially vertical direction to a movement of said hinged levers in a substantially horizontal direction, and thus to produce a mechanical advantage in applying pressure from the foot-actuated lever to the movable pressing member which results in increased pressure on said pressing member.
Another object of this invention is in a device of the character specified to utilize a pair of hinged levers connected at one end with a stationary pivot and having a toggle joint by which increased power is applied through one end of said hinged levers to a pivoted crank-lever system adapted to move the movable pressing plate downwardly against the pressing face in a strong, downward pressing movement.
Another object of this invention is in an apparatus of the character specified to utilize in a pair of hinged powertransmission levers a toggle joint disposed between a fixed pivot and "a pressure-applying cranl; lever by conn opposite ends of said pair of hinged power-tran levers to pivots mounted in fixed bearings, one of said fix d pivot bearings being mounted on the supporting plate at a position remote from said coacting pressure member and the other fixed pivot being mounted and supported closely adjacent to and directly above said mov pressure-die member, to apply power at said toggle oint and to transmit the increased pressure produced thereby through a crank lever pivoted on said two pivots above said pressing member to press said movable pressing-die member downwardly into said die-space with increased downward pressure.
Another object of this invention isin a device of the character specified to utilize'ina die including a movable pressing-die member, a pair of hinged power-transmission levers forming a toggle joint, one of said hinged levers at one side of said toggle joint being pivoted on a pivot mounted in a stationary bearing arranged in a position remote from saidamovabl'e pressing-.diemember and. then other lever having at the opposite side of said toggle joint an operative connection with the power ends of a pair of short crank-lever elements pivoted intermediate their ends in pivots mounted in stationary bearings and having their resistance ends pivotally connected with the movable pressing-die member or plate for the purpose of moving said movable pressing-die member with a downward pressure having a degree of power that is highly increased by application thereto of the toggle joint and short cranklever mechanism.
Still another object of this invention is, in combination with pressure face plates of the type specified, to provide means for guiding a movable pressure-member to be moved downwardly into the die-space in a fiat, uniform and positive manner.
Another object of this invention is in a device of the character specified to utilize, in combination with movable pressure members of the type specified, isolated spring elements extending therethrough into the die-space for frictionally engaging a fabric article inserted within the die-space by an article-carrying blade to prevent the article from removal with said blade.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so combined as to coact and cooperate with each other in the performance of the functions and the accompiishment of the results herein contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations the species or preferred form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now to these drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 5B thereof, 1 indicates a mechanism-supporting table'having legs 2 extending to a floor 3 or like support and embodying a table top composed of a narrow horizontal part 3 and an elongated sloping portion 3 The table top is composed of heavy metal and is preferably provided with a suitable electrical heating unit 4 which is operable through the switch 4 and, as shown, is provided with an indicating lamp 5 anda thermostat 6 for controlling said electrical heating unit. The present invention, however, is not concerned with the heating of the machine and'the heating unit per se is therefore not a specially shown.
Supported, in elevated position on the sloping portion 3 of the table top and arranged to extend over and directly above said heating unit is a die baseplate 7 which preferably has substantially the conformation of an inverted with a flattened junction or upper end, and is thus adapted to serve as a base member for two dies, one at each side of the middle thereof. Such dies are particularly adapted for pressing and shaping in one operation two collars, and, as shown, the pressing and shaping dies 8 and 9 are arranged in adjacency to each other at their upper ends and have body portions diverging from each other at opposite sides of the vertical median line of the table at which a guide slot 10 is provided for guiding the movement of an article-carrying member Ill having oppositely-divergent article-carrying blades 12 and 13 mounted thereon.
The base plate 7 is, therefore, sufficiently'wide to provide a die base for two dies arranged adjacent to each other at their upper ends and having body portions diverging outwardly and disposed in angular relationship to each other hke the legs of an inverted V as hereinabove stated.
In the embodiment shown, the base plate is long and wide enough to permit mounting thereon of oppositelydisposed dies 8 and 9 embodying enclosed die-spaces. Said pair of oppositely-disposed dies are formed by mounting in a centrally-disposed fixed position at the upper end of the base plate, top edging members for both dies comprising a substantially V-shaped edging member 14, and then positioning two additional edging members 15 and 16 at opposite sides of said V-shaped member to abut at their upper ends with the singularly-positioned surfaces of said V-shaped members at the upper end thereof. These two side edging members'extend downwardly along said base plate and thus form at opposite sides of said V-shaped edging member an angular die.
space conforming in outline with the article to be pressed and shaped, which, in the present embodiment, comprises a collar. As shown, these side edging members are fixed to the base plate by bolts and these edging members 15 and 16 thus extend in an outwardly divergent or inclined relationship to each other and by forming the upper portion of the edging member into a V-shaped wedge at their upper ends, as aforesaid, I produce with said side edging members and said middle V-shaped edging member two dies 8 and 9 each having at its upper end an acute angular die-space to conform with a wing portion of a collar.
Each of said side edging members 15 and 16 has inner edges which are disposed perpendicular to the base plate for the purpose of providing between such inner edges of the edging members and the fiat surface of the base plate a pair of flat pressing faces. These pressing faces extend laterally to the edge of the base plate and, as aforesaid, each has the shape of the article, viz., a collar C to be pressed and shaped. Coacting pressing members 17-17 each comprising a metallic plate, are provided above each of the pressing faces and have a shape similar to the said pressing face and die space and are movable up and down between said top and side edge-defining members. The edges of said coacting pressing member which are adjacent to said top and side edge-defining members 14, 15 and 16 are disposed vertically in perpendicular relationship to the said pressing face, and these edges are fitted closely adjacent to the adjacent edges of said edge-defining members, while the opposite edges of said coacting pressing member preferably move up and down in relation to the front edge portions 7 '7 of the die base plate 7, and when said coacting pressing member is raised, as hereinafter specified, an entrance into the die space by the oppositely divergent blades 12 and 13 of the article-carrying member 11 is provided for, it being understood that while the rear edges of such pressing faces are closed by said edging members, said base plate and said coacting pressing member are free at the front edges and may be opened to permit unobstructed passage through such frontedges which are directly opposite to and parallel with said edging members. Die spaces are thus formed that are adjacent to each other and permit entrance across their pressing faces of oppositelydivergent blades 12 and 13 of the article-carrying member 11.
In the preferred form of my invention the shiftable article-carrying member 11 is normally positioned at the lower endof the guide slot at the front of the machine and is movable or shiftable forwardly in said slot. The blades 12 and 13 of the article-carrying member 11 are formed in the shape of the die-spaces and have pointed ends and preferably have edges similar in shape to the angularity of the die-spaces and article to be pressed. The pointed ends of these blades engage and carry the pointed or winged ends of collars C to be pressed within triangular die-spaces formed on the base plate below the pressing plates 17, 17 and between the edges of the side and top edging members, respectively. These blades 12 and 13 are disposed in a plane closely adjacent to and parallel with the base plate 7 and are manually shiftable in such plane into said die-spaces and carry articles mounted thereon through the entrance opening between the base plate 7 and the movable pressing plates 171l'7 into said angular die-spaces.
Upon such shifting, the triangularly pointed ends of such blades are adapted to be moved into substantial registry with the angular die-spaces formed between the fixed top and side edge-defining members of such diespaces and to carry the edges of an article into contact with such edge-defining members.
in the preferred embodiment of my invention shown, these blades are mounted upon a slideable carriage member is movable within the guide slot 16, and in the preferred form of my invention the edges of such guide slot are reinforced by fixed plates iii and said carriage which comprises a four-wheeled member te is moved along the bottom surface of said slot it by a chain 19 which passes over a pulley 2i mounted on the supporting table 1 and having its groove registering with said slot 10. Said chain 19, as shown, is connected at its lower tend-19 with vertical connecting foot levers 2iand 21 adapted, upon a depressing movement of the pedal fil by the foot of the user, to cause an upward movement through the slot of the carriage and to carry the blades 12 and 13 into the die-spaces and thus to cause such article to be moved into re istry with the flat pressing face of the base plate and into contact with the edges of the edge-defining members and directly beneath the said coacting pressing members 17, 17 the article being thus projected edgewise into said die-space for subjection therein to pressure and shaping by the coacting pressing members hereinabove referred to.
It is important to provide means for applying to said coacting movable pressing members 17, 17 a high degree of pressure and, in accordance with my invention, for the purpose of pressing said articles flatwise in said diespace between said movable pressing member 17 and said stationary pressing face, I provide a manually operable lever mechanism including a power-increasing toggle joint for moving said coacting movable pressing member uniformly into said die-space and also for retaining said parts in pressing engagement with each other for a suflicient length of time to enable an eflicient pressing and shaping of an article inserted between said members.
In accordance with the preferred form of my invention, I mount at the upper rear end of the table top a bearing member 22 for a pair of hinged levers embodying a toggle-jointv As illustrated, this bearing member 22 is fastened by bolts 22 and is provided with spaced pivot bearings 22 within which are mounted a stationary pivot 23 on which pivot is mounted one end 24* of a pair of hinged levers 24-25 which are hingedly connected together to enable formation of a toggle joint at 26. The opposite end of said levers 24-25 is pivotally connected through a pair of pivot bearings 222-428 with a pivot member 29 mounted in the power ends 30 31 of a pair of crank lever members 33, 31 which are fulcrumed intermediate their ends on a pivot 32 mounted in stationary position on the base plate 7 and have their opposite resistance or power-applying ends connected to the coacting pressing members through pivot 33 which is mounted in bearings 34, 34 fixedly connected to the upper surfaces of said pressing members or plates 17, 17
It will be observed that a movement of the hinged levers 24, applied at the toggle joint connection be: tween said levers will transmit a highly increased degree of power through the crank members -31 to press the pressing plate downwardly into the die-spaces between the edge-defining members thereof.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated the toggle joint is movable upwardly by an upwardly movable vertically-positioned rod 35 which is operatively connected to the resistance end of a pivoted foot lever 36 which is pivoted intermediate its ends on the .pivot 37 and has its outer resistance end connected to said rod 35. Obviously upon depressing the power end or pedal 36 of the foot lever the rod 35 will be moved in a general upward direction at the toggle joint, and the hinged levers at opposite sides of said joint will move the crank members 3031 with increased pressure and said crank members will transmit said pressure to the plates 17, 17
In the embodiment shown, the toggle joint is held in angular position so as normally to raise and hold the coacting pressing members 17 17 in raised position, and for this purpose a coiled spring 33 is stretched between a fixed part of the frame of the table and the rod 35 for the purpose of maintaining the toggle joint in lowered and inoperative position.
It will be understood, of course, that when pressure is applied by the foot-member 36 to move said rod upwardly and thus straighten out said toggle joint, an increased amount of pressure will be immediately transmitted to the pressure member or plates 17 17 and an important mechanical advantage is obtained by applying pressure through said toggle joint to the movable pressing members.
In the embodiment shown, one end of the hinged levers embodying the toggle joint is fixed and stationary and consequently the entire toggle movement of the two hinged levers is immediately transmitted to the movable pressing member and thus a highly increased degree of pressure may be exerted on an article properly interposed between the said movable pressing member and the pressing face of the face plate.
Such highly increased pressure in addition to applying greater pressure than would otherwise be possible willenable a better transmission of heat from the heating elements, and consequently a more efiiciently pressed and better shaped article will result.
It will be noted also that all the parts of the mechanism shown are extremely strong and durable. Also it will be noted that a varying degree of movement of the toggle joint is provided for, and, as shown, one of the hinged levers 24 embodying said toggle joint is formed in two adjustable pieces 24 4 connected together by a turnbuckle 24, and the other hinged joint lever 25 is also made in two shiftable pieces 5 25 connected together by providing a bolt and slot connection 225 between the two parts of the lever and as shown, the bolt 25 is fixedly mounted in the lever part 25* and extends through the slot 25 in the other lever part 25.
it is desirable to provide suitable means for engaging and holding an article within the die space after retraction of the blades 12 and 13 of the article-carrying member 11 therefrom, and with this end in view I have, as more particularly illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 4A provided for each pressing plate a pair of article-engaging spring elements 39. As illustrated, each of these article-engaging spring elements comprises a narrow flat spring having intcgral body and engaging portions. The body portionis mounted on and suitably connected to the rear end of the pressing plate by screws 39* and extends forwardly toward the entrance edge of the die space. Said fiat spring then extends through a hole or bore 40 arranged in said plate adjacent to said entrance edge, and as more particularly shown in Fig. 4 the outer end of said flat spring member is free and the terminal end 39 is bent to provide a rounded article-engaging foot portion which is adapted, after pressure on the pressing plate is relieved to permit retraction of the blades from the die space, to continne to contact with an article that has been shifted into said die space by said blades and will resiliently engage said article to assist in retaining the same within the space and to hold such article within said die-space for the purpose of thereafter subjecting the same to a pressing and shaping operation.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a modified form of article-engaging elements, and in this embodiment I provide in each of the two movable die plates a pair of apertures 41 in locations similar to the bores 40, and in this modified form I utilize, instead of the integral terminal end of a flat spring as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 4A, the rounded terminal end 42 of the core 42 of a solenoid :3, which core is adapted to pass through one of said bores, Thus, a series of electro-magnets or solenoids 43 energized through automatically operated switches 44 are mounted on the movable die plate above an aperture. Obviously, when an electro-magnet or solenoid is energized, it will cause depression of the solenoid core through the aperture into the die space and into engaging contact with the article on a blade for the purpose of engaging and retaining such article in position within said space during retraction of said blade. As illustrated, the electro-magnets or solenoids are energized by operating suitable electric switches 44 in a circuit comprising legs 46 and 46, said circuit being suitably connected by wires 47-48 to a suitable source of electricity not shown. In other respects the device shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is similar to that illustrated in Figs. 1 to inclusive. 7
In Figs. 5, 5A and 5B 1 have shown a spring 49 connected at one end to the rear end of each of the pressing plates 17, 17 These springs 49 have their outer ends bent downwardly and the terminal portions of such downwardly-bent portions abut the base plate in the closed positions thereof and when pressure is applied through the toggle joint to said plates, this spring causes said rear ends of the plates to be moved resiliently into closed position.
Having described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A pressing and shaping apparatus for multiple-ply fabric articles comprising a suitable support, a stationary base plate mounted on said support and provided with a smooth flat face having mounted thereon edging members havingside faces extending perpendicularly above said pressing face and positioned in angular relationship to each other to define an angular die space having the shape of the article to be pressed, a movable pressing head having a pressing-die member fitting over said angular die space and having an angular shape similar to said pressing-die space and being movable up and down therein with its edges closely adjacent to the space-defining side faces of said edging members and in perpendicular relationship to said stationary die face, said die space and movable pressing die member having at one edge an entrance portion to permit edgewise projection into said die space of an article to be subjected to pressure and shaped, a shiftable article-carrying blade of similar shape to said die space and movable to shift through said entrance portion of said die space beneath said movable pressingdie member and to carry said article in mounted position thereon into a position with the marginal edges of said article abutting in said die space the edge-defining faces of said edging members, said article-carrying blade being retractable from said article when the latter is positioned in said die space, and means for applying pressure to said movable pressing head and its pressing-die member to press said article flatwise in said die space between said movable pressing-die member of said pressing head and said stationary pressing face including a support, a pair of hinged power-transmitting levers comprising one member pivoted in bearings fixedly mounted on said support and the other member having a power transmitting connection with said movable pressing die, said levers having at said hinged portions a power-increasing toggle joint, and means for applying power to said levers at said toggle joint for applying pressure on said movable pressing-die member in a pressing operation.
2. A pressing and shaping apparatus for multiple-ply fabric articles as claimed in claim 1 in which said stationary base-plate is disposed in an inclined position and one member of said toggle levers is pivoted above said base-plate and the power increasing toggle joint in the hinged power-transmitting levers is formed by hinging said levers in a downwardly disposed relationship to each other and the power-applying means comprises an operating rod movable upwardly to engage said hinged levers directly at said toggle joint and thus to produce a mechanical advantage in applying pressure therethrough.
3. A pressing and shaping apparatus for multiple-ply fabric articles as claimed in claim 1 in which the power increasing toggle joint in the hinged power-transmitting levers is formed by hinging said levers in a downwardly disposed relationship to each other, the power-applying means comprises an operating rod movable upwardly to engage said hinged levers directly at said toggle joint, and a foot-actuated lever is pivoted intermediate its ends and has one end thereof connected to the upwardly-movable operating rod to move the same upwardly and during its upward movement to engage said hinged levers at said toggle joint to provide increased pressure through said toggle joint on said pressing member.
4. A pressing and shaping apparatus for multiple-ply fabric articles as claimed in claim 1 in which the pair of hinged levers having intermediate their ends a toggle joint are supported at one end on a pivot mounted in stationary bearings and the opposite end is connected tov a crank lever which is movable to apply pressure on the movable pressing plate downwardly against the pressing face in downward pressing movement.
5. A pressing and shaping apparatus for multiple-ply fabric articles as claimed in claim 1 in which the toggle joint is formed in a pair of hinged levers supported at one end on a pivot mounted in stationary position at a place remote from said pressure die member and having its opposite end connected to a pressure applying crank lever, said crank lever being pivoted intermediate its ends on a pivot mounted in stationary hearings on the supporting plate of the machine in a closely-adjacent position to and directly above said movable pressing die member and power is transmitted through one end of said crank lever to press the coacting pressing face downwardly into the die-space with an increased downward pressure.
6. A pressing and shaping apparatus for multiple-ply fabric articles as claimed in claim 1 in which one of the hinged toggle levers extends in an upwardly-inclined direction, above the toggle joint and is pivoted on a pivot mounted in stationary bearings positioned above said pressing dies and the other end of said hinged levers has a pivotal connection with one end of each'member of a pair of short crank-lever elements mounted intermediate their ends in stationary pivotal bearings and having their opposite ends pivotally connected with said movable pressing-die member for the purpose of applying thereto a downward pressure with a degree of power that is highly increased by the application of power through said toggle joint and short crank lever mechanism.
7.
