(Cl. 76--31) filer of the above character in which the construction is such as to minimize or prevent any harmful chattering or vibration of the file during its movement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bench filer of the above character in which the mounting of the saw vise is such as to minimize vibration or chattering.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, the saw filer includes generally a base carrying a saw vise 21 in which a saw 22 is shown in position for sharpening by a file 23. The file 23 is supported by means including a supporting bracket structure 26 adjustably mounted on the base 2% and in turn supporting a file supporting bracket structure 27, which has a universal mounting on the supporting bracket structure 26 and also provides a mounting for an electric type motor 25, all as later described in detail.
The saw vise 21 (Figures 1 and 3) is generally of the construction shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 167,273, filed June 10, 19 50, which issued as Patent No. 2,630,721, March 10, 1953, and includes a stationary clamping jaw 31 and a movable clamping jaw 32 adjusted by means of a cam lever 33 to hold the saw 22 securely. The vise 21 is mounted for sliding movement on a supporting plate 34 on the base 29 by respective grooved guide flanges 36 which extend inwardly and engage the opposite edges of the plate 34. To slide the saw vise on its guide plate 34 and move the saw with respect to the file,-a chain 51 (Figures 3' and 8}is secured'to: the saw viseat 52 and is trained over suitable sprockets 54 one of which carries a hand wheel 55 The file is preferably mounted for adjusting movement about a'verticalaxis'intersecting the saw blade and for this purpose the bottorn'plate of the bracket structure 26 (Figures 1, 2,3 and 9) base threaded and clamped connection with the reduced upper end of a post 61 which is pivotally carried by the base 20in 'a boss 62 thereof. The boss 62 carries a" pointer 64 cooperating with a scale 66-on the plate A clamping nut 67 (Figures 9 and 10) threaded on'the lower end of post 61 secures the parts in'adjustedposition and is provided with an extending operating handle 68.
To assist in supporting and guiding the support bracket structure 26'the baseis provided-with an annular guide portion 71 (Figures 1 and 3') on-which the bottom plate 69 rests, and the bottom plate 60 is provided with a fiber friction element 72; engaging this arcuate support portion 71. The support structure 26' (Figures 1 and 4) also includes an upstanding mounting bracket76 secured at the rear of plate'60. The bracket 76 is U-shapedand its opposite arms carry adjustable tapered pivot pins '7-7 which engage in similarly tapered sockets 78 of a rocker plate 79 (Figures 4 and 5). i The rocker plate 7 9 v (Figures 4 and 5) supports the, file carried for limited sidewisemovernent fora purpose later eXplained,"and isjpr'ov'ided with a raised annular guide surface 151 which is engaged by a similar surface on a. support member 82'." The support member 32" carried a stud 85 concentric with the annular surface 81 and passing through a'cen'tral boss 84 of the'lo'wer plate, being adjustably clamped by'a nut 86 with a resilient washer '87interposed. At its forward portion the rocker plate 79' is 'provided with opposed apertur'ed' ears 88 through which pass adjusting bolts 89 having resilient washers 91 at either'end and carrying a wing nut 92. By compression of the washers 91"the file carrier has limited pivotalmovement about the pivot axis 83 so as to move the tile laterally with respect to the saw teeth.
The support member 82- (Figures 1, 2 and 4) has re spective depending cars 96 to which a motor support plate 97 is adjustablysecured, the motor 25 being carried by a U-shaped bracket 98 secured to the plate 97. The weight otthe filesup'port structure 27 is counterbalanced by a spring 92 extending between the mounting bracket '76 and the rearward portion'of the support rr'iember S2.
At its front end support member'SZ (Figures l and 2) has an upright portion 161 which carries a'vertical mounting strap 102 in which respective similar ends of parallel guidebars 103' are secured. The opposite ends of" the bars 103 are 'secured in'a strap 134 which terminates in a handle'lii6. The guide means or bars 193 are rectangular in cross section and are located with their side surfaces at 45 to the vertical andhorizontal respectively. So that aV-shapedsurface;is-presented at both the top and bottom ofeach bar: 1433." i I The guide bars 103 supportafile carriageill (Figures Patented Apr. 1 0, 1956 V 1, 6 and 7) having spaced V-shaped guide bearings 112 engaging the lower V-shaped surface of the lower bar 103 and having spaced parallel side portions 113 extending upwardly to :either side of the topbar' 103. These side portions 113 are connected by a suitable sp'acer lug 114 secured therebetween and also can'y a pivot pin 117 on which a clamping lever 118 is mounted. The opposite end of the clamping lever 118 is apertured to pass an adjusting cap screw 119 which is threaded into lug 114, with a resilient washer 121 interposed between the clamping lever 118 and the head of the cap screw or stud 119. Intermediate its ends, the clamping lever 118 is provided with the downwardly extending clamping and guide portion or guide-way 122 having a V-shaped guide bearing formed therein to engage the upper V-shaped surface of the upper bar 103. Thus a three point mounting of the file carriage is provided upon its ways with the central upper guide-way 122, resiliently urged against the guide bar 103. This construction efiectively eliminates chatter and is easily aligned during assembly.
The file 23 is supported in two depending bosses 136 of the'file carriage 111 by conventional means and is adjustable therein as to angularity by means of the indicator handle 138. p
Means are provided for reciprocating the file carriage on its waysand this means takes the form of respective connecting rods 126 (Figures 1 2 and 3) pivoted respectively at 127 at opposite sides of the carriage 111, and
pivoted at their'rearward ends at 128 to respective driving eccentrics 129 of counter-balanced construction.
These eccentrics 129 are carried at either side of a gear box 131 mounted on the support member 82 and having a suitable drive connection132 of the belt and pulley type to the motor 25.
From the above description it will be seen that the motor and drive for reciprocating the file carriage, the file carriage itself and its supporting guide-ways are mounted for vertical tilting movement as a unit about the axis of the pivot pins 77 (Figures 1 and 4) and have limited lateral movement relative to the saw about the axis of the pin 83 (Fig. 4). Thus the operator by controlling movement of the file support bracket structure 27 by means ofthe handle 106 can control the engagement of the file 23 with respect to the teeth of the saw 22 and exert lateral pressure of the file on a tooth as may be required by the extent of filing necessary. The vertical character of the file carriage and its mounting rods provides for maximum vision of the operator in guiding the file with respect to the teeth of the saw.
Together with the above features, the construction of V skill of the operator in controlling the filing operation with respect to the saw tooth profile which it is desired to obtain.
While I have shown and described preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that the invention can be varied and modified from the form shown, so that its scope should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a saw sharpener, a support structure including guide means having respective parallel guide surfaces, a file carriage supported by said guide means and having a. pair of spaced guide bearings engaging one of said guide surfaces and also having a third guide bearing engaging the other of said guide surfaces and located between said pair of guide bearings, and means for reciprocating said carriage on said guide means. r
2. In a saw sharpener, a support structure including guide means having respective parallel guide surfaces, a file carriage supported by said guide means and having a pair of spaced guide bearings engaging one of said surfaces and also having a guide bearing engaging the other or" said surfaces, resilient means-urging at least one of said guide bearings against its related guide surface, and means for reciprocating said carriage on said guide means.
3. In a saw sharpener, a support structurefincluding guide means having respective parallel guide surfaces, a file carriage supported by said guide means and having a pair of spaced guide bearings engaging one of said guide surfaces, at third guide bearing movably mounted on said carriage to engage the other of said guide surfaces, means resiliently clamping said third guide bearing against said other guide surface, and means for reciprocating said carriage on said guide means.
4. In a saw sharpener, a support structure including guide means having respective vertically aligned parallel guide surfaces, :1 file carriage supported by said guide means and having a pair of spaced bearings engaging one of said guide surfaces, a third guide bearing movably mounted on said carriage to engage the other of said guide surfaces, means resiliently clamping said third guide bearing against said other'guide surface, a file mounted on said carriage in vertical alignment with and in parallel relation to said guide surfaces, and means for reciprocating said support structure including an upstanding mounting 7 bracket, a rocker plate pivoted in said bracket for movement about a horizontal axis, a mounting member pivotally carriedby said rocker plate for movement about a vertical axis and having a yieldable connection thereto providing for limited movement about said axis, a guide 'means carried by said mounting member, a file carriage mounted for reciprocating movement on said guide means,
drive means for said file carriage including a motor carried by said mounting member, and means for supporting a saw on said base in operative relation ,to a file carried by said file carriage. I r
6. In a saw sharpener, a base, a support structure pivoted to said base for movement about a vertical axis, said support structure including an upstanding U-shaped mounting bracket, a rocker plate pivoted in said bracket for movement about a horizontal axis, a mounting member pivotally carried by said rocker plate for movement about a vertical axis and yieldably connected thereto for limited movement thereabout, guide means carried by said mounting member a file carriage on said guide means, drive means for said file carriage including a motor carried by said mounting member and disposed within the opening of said mounting bracket, and means for supporting a saw on said base in operative relation to a file carried by said file carriage.
