(Cl. 299-1401) The present invention relates to spraying devices for spraying coating materials, especially such materials as are non-premixable for coating.
There are some coating materials or substances, such as an enamel, or like type of coating material, which when sprayed or applied,has or needs a rapid curing, and it has been found that it may be effected, as by way of example, by the use of a substance generally known as a catalyst, or the like, which acts rapidly and helps a rapid and efiicient coating.
The present invention relates to a coating means or spraying device for spraying a coating material, for example such as an enamel type of coating material, or the like, as referred to above, and more particularly the means for projecting with or in such spray of coating material, the curing or like material, such as a catalyst as ientioned above, whereby the two mix or become associated or unite and react together during the spraying action or process so as to be in proper condition for coating or effecting a coating of the surface being or to be coated.
The present invention may be regarded as an improvement on the invention disclosed in the co-pending application of I. O. Johansson, Ser. No. 226,257, filed May 14, 1951, on Spray Coating Means And Method, now forfeited.
Other objects, advantages, capabilities, features, and the like are comprehended by the invention as will later appear, or as are inherently possessed by the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawings:
Fig. l is a part vertical sectional view and part elevational view of a spray gun employing or embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a part top view partly in section and partly in elevation of a part of a spray gun and of the associated improvement of the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side view of a part of the improvement.
Referring now more in detail to the drawings, the embodiment selected to illustrate the invention is shown as comprising a spray gun 11 having a body portion 11, a head portion 12, a nozzle portion 13 connected to the head portion 12 by a suitable coupling means or the like 14, and a handle portion 15.
On the body portion 11 is pivotally mounted by way of suitable pivot means 16 a hand operated control means or trigger 17 or the like. The handle 15 preferably has an air entry passage 18 leading to a valved chamber 19 having a valve 20 for controlling the passage of air to the forward part or chamber portion 21 of the chamber 19 and which part 21 has a passage or passages 22, 23, leading to an air passage or chamber 24 leading to a passage or chamber 25, and a further passage 26 which in turn leads to the air chamber or passage 27 provided in the upper part of the body 11, as shown in Fig. 1.
The valve 20 is normally held closed by a spring 28 and this valve has a valve stem 29 slidable in the forward part or portion of the chamber portion 21 and the forward part of such valve stem 29 being in operative engagement with a contact piece 30 carried by the hand operated trigger 17, when pulled back by the hand of the operator moves the rod 29 and opens the valve 20 to permit passage of air under pressure to pass by way of the passages 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 to the passage or chamber 27.
The air then passes from the air passage or chamber 27 to a passage or chamber 31 provided in a connecting piece or coupling member 32 between the body portion 11 and the head portion 12 of the gun 10. This passage or chamber 31 leads to a chamber 33 provided in the head portion 12.
Within the nozzle portion 13 and in the forward portion of the head portion 12 is located a material and air passage member 34 having a forward contacting member or portion 35 seated against the nozzle portion, 13, and a rearward contacting member or portion 36 with a portion or part 37 of the head portion 12. The head portion 12 has a material inlet part or portion 38 having a material passage 39 leading to a material chamber or passage 41) provided in the material and air passage member 34 above referred to, this passage 40 leading to a tapered forward portion or part 41 having a material projecting nozzle part or tip 42 extending in a central opening 43 provided in the front 44 of the nozzle part or portion 13, and the projecting of the coating material through said nozzle part 42 being controlled by a tapered valve part 45 carried at the forward end portion of a valve stem 46 extending rearwardly in the material chamber 41) and in the gun body portion 11 rearwardly of the hand trigger member 17, and also carrying a sleevelike member 47 slidable in the gun body 11 as shown in Fig. l, the sleeve-like member 47 having a head 48 at the 7 rear of the hand lever or trigger member 17 to be contacted by and moved rearwardly when the hand trigger member or means 17 is pulled back by the users or operators hand so as to likewise move the valve stem 46 rearwardly and hence the valve part 45 to cause it to open and to cause the coating material in the chamber 40 to be projected out as a liquid stream 49. (See Fig. 2.)
The member 34 has an intermediate portion 50 making sealing contact with nozzle portion 13 at its forward portion and with the head portion 12 at its rear portion, and has or is provided with air passages 51, 52, leading from the air chamber 33 by way of ducts 53, 54, respectively, and air ducts 51 leading to air chamber 55 provided in the nozzle portion 13, and air ducts 52 leading to the air chamber 56 in the front portion of the nozzle portion 13. The nozzle portion 13 also has air passages 59 (see Fig. 2) leading from the air chamber 55 to side ports or jet orifices 57, 58, for the projecting of side air jets or streams 1117, 106 for acting on the central or projected stream or streams 49 of material projected from the nozzle or tip 42. Thus, from the chamber 55 lead air passages 59 (see Fig. 2) for supplying the air to the side orifices 57, 58 (see Fig. 2). The ducts or air passages 52 lead to the chamber 56 which chamber has air projecting orifices 619, 60, 61, 61, and also an annular opening 62, for projecting air around or against the liquid stream 49 projected from the material nozzle 42. The air jets or streams 107, 106, projected from the side or horn ports 57, 58, and all the air projected from the orifices 60, 61, and also the air projected from the annular orifice 62 wiil unite as shown in Fig. 2 to engage and enshrond, so to speak, the main material or liquid stream 49.

At the forward cndofthe, member 66 is provided a chambered part 85 inwhich is provided a chamber 86 in communication with the valve port 73, and this chamber 86 has a lateral openingin which is provided a nozzle member 87 having a passage 88 communicating with chamber 86-andior projecting the curing fluid in a stream or the like 89 toward and into the stream of coating material from theorifi'cc 43and air-mixed with it from theports 60, 61, 622 and from the side ports 57, 53 to mix therewithand to be carried therewith and to effect the curing action by the time the mixture or the like reaches thesurface to be coated. The nozzle part 87 may be secured in place by suitable threads or the like 90. The body 63 of the projector may be held in place with the holding part 64-65 by any suitable securing or holding means 91.
