BOX FASTENER.
No. 273,863. Patented Mar. 13,1883.
Men 1706 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFTEE.
STEPHEN MARTINELLI AND MARTIN E. MARTINELLI, OF WATSONVILLE, CAL.
BOX-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,863, dated March 13, 1883. Application filed October 9, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, STEPHEN MARTINELLI and MARTIN E. M ARTINELLI, of Watson ville, county of Santa Cruz, State of California, have invented an Improved Packing-Box; and We hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to a certain improvement in packing-boxes; and it consists in a means of readily securing the cover to the box in such manner that it may be as easily removed without injuring the cover or the box, as will hereinafter fully appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the
IS figure is a perspective view of our device.
A represents an ordinary box. Its ends on top are provided with guides or cleats B, the height of which should be about equal to the thickness of the cover or lid 0. Into these guides are driven nails D, having large tlat heads, the edges of which extend inwardly over the edge of the guides. Their outer edges should be made flush with the edge of the box.
0 is thelid or cover. In length it is adapted to fit the ends of the box between the guides B. At one end it has cut out a recess, 0, beside which is a smaller one, a. of the box is a small recess, a, similar to the recess a. In fitting the cover on the box, if
0 the contents are well pressed down, the cover may be entered at one side between guides B and pushed into place; but, as we particularly intend this device as a fruit-box, this manner of fitting the cover will not always answer.
5 It is seldom thatthe fruit is packed low enough to allow the cover to slide over. It must be pressed down. Herein is the advantage of our cover. WVe first insert one end underthe nailhead in such a position that the recess 0 in its other end will pass down by the opposite nailhead. In doing this, pressure aloneis required. Having fitted down the cover, as described, it willalready be half-way on, and itcan be pushed Upon the other end the rest of the distance, its edges fitting under and being secured by the nail-heads. In 5 order to keep it from moving to either side when once in place, we put nailsethrough the small recesses a a and drive them down into the ends. It is an easy matter to remove these nails and slide the cover out.
WVe are aware that it is'an old device to secure a cover to a box by sliding it in guides'or channels made in said box; but in all these cases the guides or channels are continuous, and to insert the cover it must be introduced from one side or end and pushed the entire distance. It cannot be inserted otherwise; but our cover, by reason of the peculiar channels formed by the guides B, the fiat heads of the nails D, and the recess cin the cover,-niay 6o be inserted from above, as described.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The box A, havingend guides,B, and the separate nails D in said guides, extending inwardly over the edge of the guides, in combination with the cover or lid 0, having a recess,
0, in one end and fitting the box, as described, all arranged and operating substantially 7) herein described.
2. The boxA,havingend guides, B, and the nails Din said guides, having flat heads extending iuwardlyover the edgeofthe guides, in combination with the cover or lid (J, having a 7 recess, 0, in one end for fitting down past the nail-head, and small recesses we in its ends to receive nails 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands.
