UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIMOTHY D. LYONS AND DANIEL J. LINEHAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COCK AND VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,62,-dated March 1?, 1883.
(No model.)
1'0 all 'lU/LOHL it may concern:
Be it known that we, TIMOTHY l). Lyons and DANIEL J. LINEHAN, both citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the 5 county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Im prorements in Cocks and Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvcmeutsin that; class of cocks or faucets the valve-stem or which can be covered and concealed by a screw-cap adapted to a screw-thread surrounding the stem for the purpose of preventing unauthorized persons from opening the cock or faucet unless they resort to a wrench or other implement to remove the cap.
The object of our invention is to'provide means for concealing and protecting the screwthread around the valve-stem in order to reuntil it is desired to screw the cap thereon.
To this end our invention consists in acock orfa-ucet having a screw-thread surrounding its vavle-stem, combined with a ring having an internal screw-thread ot'awidth approximately equal to the said screw-thread around the valvestem, and adapted to be screwed thereon to conceal and protect the same until it is desired to apply the cap for covering the end of the valve-stem.
in the accompanying drawings, which illustrate our invention, Figure 1 represents a twoway cock with the cap in position; Fig. 2, a detached sectional view of the ring which serves to conceal and protect the screw-thread around the valve-stem when the cap is removed; Fig. 3, a View showing the ring in position; and Figs land 5 represenflrespectively, caps applied to screw-threads on the valvestem itself, and on a screw-threaded neck of the casing.
The cook or faucet may be of any known construction, with a Valve-stem, G, for opening and closing the valve which controls the usual passage-way through the valve. The annular screw-threads F, (shown in Figs. 1 and tain said thread clean and in good condition 3,) for receiving the intcrnallythreaded cap A, are formed on the casingof the cook or faucet, so as to surround the valve-stem,while in Fig. 4: the screw is on the valve-stem itself, and in 0 Fig. 5 the screw-thread is on a neck projecting from the casing. In all the constructions shown the internally-ti]readed cap is adapted to the screw-threads F, for the purposeof covering and concealing the valve-stem G for the purpose of rendering it impossible to operate the stem to open the cock or faucet without first removing the cap through the medium oi a wrench or other implement.
When the cap is not in use on the cook or faucet it is desirable to conceal and protect the screw-threads F, for the purpose of preventing injury to them and their becoming clogged with dirt, and to retain such threads in the best condition to conveniently apply the 6 cap A when desired. To such end we provide a ring, B, which is internally screw-threaded, and is of a width equal or approximately equal to the height of the screw-threaded portion on the cook or faucet or its valve-stein, such ring being ada ted to screw on such screwthreads and thereby accomplish the object stated.
We do not broadly claim the screw-thread on the casingot' the cook or faucet or its valve, 7 nor do we claim a cap adapted thereto; but,
Having thus described our invention, what we do claim is- A cook or faucet having a screw-thread sun rounding its valve-stem, combined with the ring B, having an internal screw-thread of a width approximately equal to the screw around the valve-stem, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set 8 our hands and seals in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
