Claims. (CL- 340*367) This-invention relates to television apparatus, and in particular to means for anchoring a metal backed picture tube to a metal frame and improvements in insulation of of the tube from the frame.
Mountings for picture tubes having metal back portions converging from a flange about the periphery of the screen have involved use of elaborate mechanism to anchor themto their supports and also elaborate means for electrically insulating the tubes from adjacent electrically conductive objects. As a result, the cost of mounting the tubes was high.
Due to the present invention, the cost of mounting a metal-backed picturetube has been simplified, the use of expensive insulating material reduced and the cost. of manufacture has consequently also been thereby reduced.

The television apparatus, in which the invention is incorporated, includes a chassis or frame which is indicated .in its entirety by the reference character 6. It is formed from sheet metal and includes a vertical front wall 7 and side walls 8 which extend downward from a top Wall. 9 of rectangular formation. At the junctions of the front and side Walls, the frame 6' is surmounted by support members or brackets 11 to sustain a picture tube 12- in spaced relation. to the frame 6.
The picture tube 12 is of the so-called metal variety; that is, it has a back portion 13 which is of drawn metal convergent from the periphery of a transparent Window 14 of glass on the inside of which is the picture screen, not shown. Integral with the back portion 13 and about the periphery of the window 14 is a flange 16 to which said window 14 is bonded.
Each of the supports is formed from sheet metal and transversely thereof is substantially L-shaped. At their base, the supports 11 are bolted to the front wall 7 and side walls 8. Since itis desirable that the picture tube 12 extend beyond the plane of front wall 7, the supports include carrier portions 17 which are in oflset relationship to said wall7. Also, the upper edges of the carrier portions are curved to provide seats on sockets 18 (Figs. 1 and 3) in conformity with the peripheral curvature of the flange 16. Furthermore, the carrier portions 17 are in angular relation to each other better to conform to a crown or lens, not shown, on the front of the picture tube.
United States PatentO Upwardly and at" their corners, the supports 11 include vertically extending looped or tubular portions 19 which provide a vertically extending socket to accommodate the threaded end portions 21 of a U-shaped tie rod or draft member 22. Nuts 23 threaded on the ends 21 of the rod engage the lower ends of the loops 19 enabling the tie rod 22 to be drawn down against the back portion 13. This operation draws the picture tube 12 toward the frame 6 and the flange 16 into clamped association with the carrier portions 17.
It is desirable that electrically conductive, external parts of the picture tube 12 be insulated from the supports 11, said" supports being in electrical communication with the frame 6. Therefore, sectional insulating units 24 are provided. Each of the units 24 is substantially H-shaped in in cross-section (Fig. 4) and curved linearly to conform with the curvature of the sockets 18. In cross-section, each of the units 24 further include a web portion 26 joining a front section 27 and rear section 28. The lower portions of the sections 27 and 28 shroud the support member 11 in the vicinity of the flange 16 while the front and rear of said flange is also shrouded by the respective sections to resist loss of high voltage currents from the tube 12. As an additional feature to this end, the rear section 28 includes a series of ribs 29 extending longitudinally of said section where it shrouds the rear of flange 16, to still lessen the possibility of surface conduction from the back portion 13 to the support 17.
For resisting the corona discharge from the flange 16, an annular insulation member 31 is employed. it completely surrounds the periphery of the flange 16, and being U-shaped in cross-section shrouds the front and rear regions ofsaid flange. The member 31-,although annular, may be split transversely thereof for convenience of its assembly with the flange and has end portions one of which extends within the other end portion to complete the ring of. insulation about the flange. When in operation, the annular member 31 extends between the sectional insulators 24 and flange 16 which pinch said member and thereby resist its removal. Additionally, an inwardly turned lip 32, on the front section 27, urges the outer edge 33 of member 31 into wrapped relationship to the edge 34 of the flange 16.
To insulate the back portion 13' of the picture tube from the upper Wall 9 of the frame, a planar insulating member 36 (Fig. 2) is provided. It is preferably of some suitable substantially flexible plastic insulating material such as polyethylene. It is formed from a sheet of the insulating material and extends from the junction of front and top walls 7 and 9 rearward to a region centrally of said top wall. The insulating member 36 also extends downward over the front wall, and is anchored at its extremities in any suitable manner such as by rivets 35, or an adhesive, to the frame 6.
The metal backportion 13 of the tube is further insulated from the tie rod 22. This is carried out by means of asleeve 37 of suitable insulating material on the rod 22 and which extends from one to the other of the support members 11.
As will be noted- (Fig. 5), the back portion 13 of the picture tube converges away from the flange 16, and the clampingv force of the tie rod 22 is in a plane in slightly oblique relation to the back portion. Therefore, it will be understood that the back portion 13 exerts a camming action on the member 22 tending to urge it away from the flange 16 when the elongated member is tightened over the picture tube.

Suitable links were made from brass .040" thick and in width. At one end thereof the link 38 is bent. laterally to include a flange portion 39 which is, in turn, also bent to provide a backward-turned end portion 40 spaced from the remainder of the link, to provide a hook 45 for hooked engagement with the flange 16. The remaining end of the link is bent to provide a stop portion or lug 41, extending upward from the back portion 13. In addition, the lug is bent backward and downward at its upper end to provide an abutment 42 the extremity of whichis adapted to engage the back portion 13. Furthermore, due to an offset portion 43, intermediate its ends, the link 38 is more susceptible of alignment with the contour of the picture tube, Where the flange joins the back portion.
7 As the tie rod 22 is tensioned, it presses the link 38 into engagement with the back portion 13 and concurrently urges the lower extremity of prop 42 into engagement with the back portion 13. By the latter engagement the prop 42 resists a tendency of the lug 41 to be bent away from the flange by the rod 22. Also concurrently with this, the hook 45 is retained in hooked relationship to the flange 16 both as a matter of perfect hooked relationship to the flange and for electrical contact therewith so that a conductor wire or cable 44, soldered to the prop 42, is in electrical communication with the back portion.
Cushioning means is provided as a safeguard against cutting or cold-flow of the plastic material of sleeve 37 due to the force exerted on it by the rod 22. Although this measure is advisable at corner regions 46 of the back portion, whereat the compression force of rod 22 is concentrated, it is also advisable that cushioning means be provided between the links 38 and the sleeve 37, also due to a concentration of compression force on account of Therefore, a section of resilient tubing material 47 overlies the sleeve 37 at both of the upper corner regions 46 from which the sections continue toward each other adequately for their extension between the sleeve 37 and the links 38.
By the present invention, we have produced novel means of securing a picture tube to a frame and at the same time taken advantage of the clamping capacity of the securing means to secure necessary insulating elements in position to segregate the picture tube, electrically, from the fastenings. Furthermore, the securing means has been made operative partly by a link of reduced cross-sectional area due to its novel formation, and these features have been produced at a marked saving in material and consequent reduction in price to a consumer. 1
Although we have described one embodiment of our invention, we are aware that numerous and extensive departures may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
We claim:
1. In television apparatus comprising a frame having front and side surfaces, and a picture tube surmounting said frame having a screen and back portions converging from a flange about the screen, support means for said picture tube including a pair of bracket members having arms arranged for resilient attachment to the front and side surfaces of said frame, socket means formed at the apex of said arms and an elongated draft member extending over said picture tube and extending through said socket means, adjustment means on the ends of said draft member and in engagement with said socket means to adjustably draw said elongated member into pressure engagement with said picture tube, link means mounted on the flange of said picture tube and arranged to be secured thereto by said elongated draft member, and said link means being formed to support said draft member thereby preventing displacement of said draft member, a carrier portion formed on each bracket member and having a seat arranged to receive the flange of said picture tube and to releasably secure said tube into its operative position, insulation means between said seats and said flange to insulate said flange from said bracket member and to provide a cushioned support for said picture tube.
2. In television apparatus comprising a frame having front and side surfaces, and a picture tube surmounting said frame having a screen and back portions converging from a flange about said screen, support means for said picture tube including a pair of bracket members having arms arranged for releasable attachment to the front and side surfaces of said frame, elongated vertical socket means formed at the apex of said arms and having a smooth exterior surface to prevent entanglement with associated elements of said apparatus, a draft member extending over said picture tube and extending through said socket means, adjustment means on the ends of said draft member and in engagement with said socket means to adjustably draw said elongated member into pressure engagement with said picture tube, link means mounted on the flange of said picture tube and arranged to be secured thereto by said elongated draft member, and said link means being formed to support said draft member thereby preventing displacement of said draft member, a carrier portion formed on each bracket member and having a seat arranged to receive the flange of said picture tube and to releasably secure said tube into its operative position, insulation means between said seats and said flange to insulate said flange from said bracket member and to provide a cushioned support for said picture tube.
3. In television apparatus comprising a frame having front and side surfaces, and a picture tube surmounting said frame having a screen and back portions converging from a flange about the screen, support means for said picture tube including a pair of bracket members having arms arranged for releasable attachment to the front and side surfaces of said frame, elongated socket means formed at the apex of said arms and a draft member extending over said picture tube and through said socket means, adjustment means on the ends of said draft member and in engagement with said socket means to adjustably draw said elongated member into pressure engagement with said picture tube, link means mounted on the flange of said picture tube and arranged to be secured thereto by said draft member, and said link means being formed to support said draft member thereby preventing displacement of said draft member, a carrier portion struck from one arm of each bracket member and displaced from the plane of said arm, a seat formed on said carrier portion and arranged to receive the flange of said picture tube and to releasably secure said tube into its operative position, insulation means between said seats and said flange to insulate said flange from said bracket member and to provide a cushioned support for said picture tube.
4. In television apparatus comprising a frame having front and side surfaces and a picture tube surmounting said frame having a screen and back portions converging from a flange about the screen, support means for said tube including a pair of bracket members being substantially L-shaped in cross-section and having arms arranged for attachment to the front and side surfaces of said frame, a carrier portion struck from the arm of each bracket attached to the front surface of said frame and displaced from the vertical plane of said front surface, cylindrical socket means formed at the apex of said arms of each bracket and extending upward integrally with said carrier portion and arm attached to the side surface of said frame, a draft member extending over said picture tube and through said socket means, adjustment means on the ends of said draft member and in engagement with said socket means to adjustably draw said draft member into pressure engagement with said'picture tube,
link means mounted on the flange of said picture tube and arranged to be secured thereto by said draft member, and said link means being formed to support said draft member thereby preventing displacement of said draft member, a seat formed on said carrier portion and arranged to receive the flange of said picture tube and to secure said tube into its operative position, insulation means between said seats and said flange to insulate said flange from said bracket member and to provide a cushioned support for said picture tube.
5. In television apparatus comprising a frame having spaced-apart supports to carry a picture tube having a screen and back portion converging from a flange about the screen, means for fixedly associating the picture tube with the frame comprising an elongated draft member extending over the picture tube beside the flange and terminating in end portions at the supports, said draft mernher having adjacent sections thereof in direct pressure engagement with the periphery of said picture tube throughout the upper portion of said tube, said draft member being adapted to be adjusted to draw the flange into clamped association with said supports by tensioning the elongated means, means to resist displacement of the elongated member away from the flange by a camming action of the back portion on said elongated member when it is tightened comprising link means between the flange and elongated members, an insulation member spaced between said link means and said elongated memher and arranged to embrace said flange of said tube about the periphery thereof, connector means at one end of said link for releasable connection with the flange and arranged to be encased by said insulation member thereby insulating said link member, and stop means on the remaining end of the link means for retentive engagement With the elongated member, said link means retaining the connector means in coupled association with the flange when it is in clamped association with the back portion and concurrently retaining the stop means in operative position to couple the elongated member to the flange.
