Application September is, 1952, Serial No. 310,191 1 Claim. (Cl. 81-15 This invention relates in general to tools, and more specifically to a paper core repairing tool.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved tool for straightening tubes and the like, said tool being provided with a plurality of heads for progressively straightening the tubes.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved tube straightening tool which includes first and second tube straightening members having elongated handles, said tube straightening member being of different sizes and being adapted to be progressively passed through tubes whereby the same may be gradually straightened.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved tube straightening tool which includes first and second tube straightening members having elongated handles which are in telescoping cooperating engagement, said tube straightening members being adapted to be forced through a bent tube for straightening the same by utilizing the handle of the other tube straightening member as a ramrod.
A still further object of this invention is to provide i an improved tube straightening tool which includes first and second tube straightening members having elongated handles, said tube straightening members adapted to have their handles telescoped so as to form a compact and an easily handled unit.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the tube straightening tool, which is the subject of this invention, one of the handles of the tube straightening tool being shown in section in order to clearly illustrate the manner in which its tube straightening member is secured thereto and the relationship of the other handle which is telescoped therein, the central portions of the handles of the tube straightening tool being broken away;
Figure 2 is a plan view of one of the tube straightening members and its associated handle, a portion of the handle being broken away adjacent its intersection with the tube straightening member in order to illustrate the manner in which the same is secured to the same, an intermediate portion of the handle being broken away;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the other of the tube straightening member and its associated handle, the handle having intermediate portionthereof omitted;
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 44 of Figure l and shows the cross sections of the bandles and one of the tube straightening members; and
Figure 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 5-5 of Figure 2 and shows the general cross section of the other of the tube straightening members.
Similar characters of reference designated similar or identical elements and portions throughout the specification and throughout the difierent views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that there is illustrated inFigure 2 a first tube straightening member, which is referred to by the reference numeral and which is conical in outline. Extending rearwardly from the b ase of the tube straightening member 10 is a rod-like extension of a reduced cross section. The rod-like extension is referred to by the reference numeral 12 and is utilized in the securement of the tube straightening member 1 0 to an elongated handle 14. The handle 14 is preferably of a circular cross section and has formed in one end thereof a circular cross sectional bore 16 of a size to tightly receive the rod-like member 12. It will be understood that the rod-like member 12.may be forced into the bore 16 so as to prevent separation of the handle 14 from the tube straightening member 10. However, if additional fastening meansshould be deemed necessary, the handle 14 may be secured to the tube straightening member 10 by suitable fastening means.
The tube straightening member 10 and its associated handle 14 forms a first tool section which is referred to in general by reference numeral 18. The tube straightening tool, which is the subject of this invention, is referred to in general by the reference numeral 20 and includes a second tool section which is referred to by the reference numeral 22. The tool section 22 includes a tube straightening member 24 which is also conical in outline, but is of a smaller size than the tube straightening member 10. The tube straightening member 24, as is best illustrated in Figure 1, is also provided with a rod-like member 26 which is of a reduced cross section and extends rearwardy from the tube straightening member 24.
The tool section 22 also includes an elongated handle 28 which is tubular and is formed of pipe or the like. The handle 28 has an internal diameter substantially equal to the external diameter of the rod-like extension 26 and the same is forced into one end thereof. The tube straightening member 24 may be additionally secured to the handle 28, if it be necessary, by suitable fastening means.
It will be noted that the external diameter of the handle 14 is substantially equal to the internal diameter of the handle 28 whereby a sliding telescoping fit is permissible. It will be also noted that the length of the handle 14 is such that the free end thereof engages the end of the rod-like extension 26 simultaneously with the engagement of the free end of the handle 28 with the base of the tube straightening member 10.
When it is desired to straighten a tube having a flat tened portion, the tube straightening member 24, which is the smaller of the tWo tube straightening members, is started into one end of the tube to be straightened. Then by utilizing the tool section 18 as a ramrod, the tube straightening member 24 is forced through the tube being straightened. After the tube straightening member 24 has been forced through the tube, the same is withdrawn from within the tube and the tool 20 reversed end for end. The tube straightening member 10 is then aligned with and forced into the tube to be straightened. The tube straightening member 10, which should have a diameter substantially equal to'the diameter of the tube being straightened, is then progressively forced through the tube by utilizing the tool section 22 as a ramrod. Inasmuch as the tube straightening member 10 has a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the tube being straightened, it will be seen that when the tube straightening member 10 is forced through a tube, the internal diameter thereof is returned to normal. Having been so straightened, the tube may be utilized for the purpose for which it was intended.
While the tube straightening tool 20, which is the subject of this invention, may be utilized with any type of tubes, the tool has been specifically designed for repairing paper rolls that have been damaged so that the center is flattened together in such a condition that the roll cannot be mounted on a shaft. By utilizing the tool 20, in the manner outlined above, the core of the paper rolls may be opened to allow the shaft to be inserted therethrough.
The operation of this device will be understood from the foregoing description of the details thereof, taken in connection with the above recited objects and the drawings. Further description would appear to be unnecessary.
Minor modifications of the device, varying in minor details from the embodiment of the device illustrated and described here, may be resorted to without departure from the spirit and scope of this invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A tube straightening tool comprising a pair of members, each of said members having a handle portion and an enlarged head portion, one of said handle portions being tubular and having the other of said handle portions telescoped therein, one of said head portions being in the form of a conical tube straightening head, said conical head having a base of a greater diameter than the diameters of said handles, the other of said head portions being in the form of a driving head.
