G. GERDOM. DRYING 0R MOISTURE EXTRAUTING APPARATUS.
No" 273,721} Patented Mar. 13,1883.
11 .1 I s l 35%;. 2 J} i i x 1 T J WITNESSES 1.7V T EJV TOR 2 06 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GREGORY GERDOM, OF WEST TROY, NEW YORK.
DRYING OR MOISTURE-EXTRACTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,721, dated March 13, 1883. Application filed December 9, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GREGORY GERDoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Troy, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Drying or Moisture-Extracting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved device or apparatus for extracting water or moisture from goods of various kinds; and it has for its object to efi'ect this result in a simple, economic, and effective manner, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed outin the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view; and Fig. 2 is a similar view, illustrating a modification.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both figures.
A represents a suitably-constructed tank or vessel ot'anydesired dimensions, whichis placed upon and connected by an air-tight joint to a base or casing, B, forming a chamber, (I, which is separated from the chamber A by a perforated hott0m,D. E is apipe, forming an outlet from the chamber 0. F is another pipe, entering the pipe E, and provided with a nozzle, G, within said pipe E, pointing away from the chamber 0. A jet of steam or compressed air may be introduced into the pipeE through the pipe F from a suitably-located boiler or air-pump.
In operation, the goods or articles which are to be dried are packed in the tank or vessel A. I then introduce through the pipe E a jet of steam or compressed air, thus creating a vacuum in thechamber 0, whereby every trace of moistureis extracted from the articles contained in the tank Aand collected in the chamber 0 from whence it may be readily removed, either through the pipe E or through a suitably-arranged draining-cock.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown a modification ofmy invention,by which even better and more satisfactory results may be obtained. To accomplish this, the apparatus above described is supplemented by a cap, H, fitted upon or over the tank A by an air-tight joint, and equipped with a pipe, I, through which a current of compressed air, either hot or cold, or in some cases steam, may be introduced into the tank A. By the employment of this supplemental device the desired result may be more rapidly and satisfactorily attained.
The uses and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. Itis simple in construction, inexpensive, and may be easily operated in the manner and for the purposes stated.
I claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination and arrangement, as herein described, of the tank A, base B, having chamber 0, perforated bottom D, exit-pipe E, steam-pipe F, entering the said exit-pipe and having a nozzle, G, within the latter, and the detachable top H, having pipe I, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GREGORY GERDOM.
