3 Claims. (Cl. ill-90) This invention relates to a locking device for double hung windows and the like and has for an object to provide a device for locking the window either in closed or in various partly open positions.
. Another object is to provide a lock which prevents a partially open double hung window from being further opened to an extent to permit unauthorized entry.
Another object is to provide a locking device for locking a pair of sliding window sashes together and to the window frame.
Another object is to provide a lock for double hung windows and the like having novel 'and improved characteristics.
Another object is to provide a compact and inconspicuous locking means for double hung windows which provides for ventilation and protection against unwanted prowlers and with security for windows accessible from outside, even after the glass is broken.
Various other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully set forth.
The invention will be better understood by referring to `the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which a specific embodiment has been shown for purposes of illustration.

Referring to the drawings more in detail, a double hung window s shown having upper and lower sashes 10 and 11 respectively, slidable in a frame 12. The upper sash 10 includes a side rail 13 and a bottom cross rail 14 and the lower sash includes a side rail 15 and a top cross rail 16, the two cross rails being in contact when the sashes are in closed position as shown in Fig. 1.
Attached to the side rail 13 of the upper sashr is a metal strip having a series of holes 21, 22, 23 therein ice to receive a locking plunger to be described. The strip 20 extends across the bottom cross rail 14 which is recessed so that the strip 20 lies llush with the surface thereof and behind the cross rail 16 of the lower sash. The frame 12 also carries a metal strip 25 having a series of holes 26, 27, 28 to receive a second locking plunger.
The locking device comprises a housing 30 (Figs. 9 to ll) having a pair of ears 31 to be attached to the side rail 15 of the lower sash. The housing 30 carries a cylinder lock 32 having a key-actuated rotary plug 33 carrying an eccentric pin 34.
A rst locking plunger 35 is mounted to slide in the housing 30 with its axis parallel to the axis of the cylinder lock 32 and projecting rearwardly from the housing. The plunger 35 carries a pin 36 engaging a `slot 37 in an actuator plate 38 which is pivoted about a screw 39 to the housing 30.
A second locking plunger 40 is slidably mounted in the housing with its axis normal to the axis of the plunger 35 and projecting from the side of the housing. The plunger 4i) carries a pin 41 engaging a slot 42 in an actuating plate 43 pivoted about a screw 44 to the housing 30.
An angle slide plate 45 having flanges 46 and 47 is disposed to slide on the housing 30. The flange 46 has an elongated opening 48 to receive the eccentric pin 34 of the rotary plug 33 so that turning of the plug causes linear sliding movement of the angle plate. The flange also carries a pin 49 engaging a slot 50 in the actuating plate 43 to advance or retract the locking plunger 40 in response Vto sliding movement of the angle plate 45. The ilange 47 has an elongated slot 51 engaging apin 52 carried by the actuating plate 38 andkarranged to advance and retract the locking plunger 35 in response to sliding movement of the angle plate 45.
The housing 30 is attached to the upper part of the side rail 15 and the cross rail 16 of the lower sash with the lirst locking plunger 35 extending through a hole .55 in the cross rail 16 to enter the bottom hole 21 of the strip 20 and a registering recess 56 in the cross krail 14 of the upper sash when the sashes are in closed position.
Actuation of the key actuated plug 33 serves to advance the plunger 35 into locking position orto retract the same from the strip 20 to release the sash for opening. 'With the lower sash partly raised or the upper sash partly lowered the locking plunger 35 maybe advanced intorthesecond hole 22, or the third hole 23 of the strip 2'0 to lock the sashes together against relative sliding movement in such partly open positions. The strip 20 may be provided with index marks 60 to assist in properly positioning the sash for locking in the respective positions. Obviously any desired number of holes may be provided for securing the sash in various partly open positions relative to each other.
In order to prevent the two sashes from being moved vertically as a unit, the second locking plunger 40 is provided. When advanced by actuation of the plug 33, the plunger 40 enters one of the holes in the strip 25 on the stationary frame 12. With the lower sash in closed position the plunger 40 enters the lower hole 26 in the strip 25. With the sash in partly raised position the plunger 40 enters one of the other holes 27, 28 in the strip 25, thereby preventing the two sashes from being moved as a unit. The plungers 35 and 40 are actuated in unison by the cylinder lock 32 so that only one operation is required for locking the sashes together and to the stationary frame 12.
With the above construction the lower sash may be raised, say 8 inches, and the upper sash may be lowered, say 8 inches, and both sashes locked against movement. Without such securing of the sash to the frame 12 in the above positions the two sashes could be raised together to form a bottom opening of 16 inches which would be suicient to permit entry. The invention accordingly provides for means for locking the sashes with an opening at the top and bottom While preventing movement of either sash to enlarge the opening.
Other actuating mechanism can be used to connect the rotary plug to advance or retract the plunger. For example racks and gears or other means may replace the pivoted plates or the plungers may be pivoted if desired. The shape and position of the plungers may also be varied.
In order that the Windows can be placed easily in the locking positions, levers, pins, or the like, not shown, may be attached hingedly on the inside edge under notches 60 on the stationary strike plate 25. This lever can be turned against strike plate 2t) to meet with the corresponding notch 60 which would align the upper sash. The lower sash can be pushed against said turned lever for aligning both sashes.
The locking device is adapted to general application. For example Figs. 12 and 13 illustrate the device with the locking plunger 35 removed to leave only the plunger 40. The device is shown as mounted on the sash 61 of a swinging Window closing against a jamb 62. A keeper 63 attached to the jamb 62 receives the locking plunger 40.
The device may also be used for other double sliding members such as sliding doors in which case one plunger is set to lock the two doors together and the other plunger enters the door frame to prevent movement of the doors relative thereto. Other adaptations will be apparent to a person skilled in the art.
What is claimed is:
l. A device for securing a double hung Window or the like having a pair of sashes slidable in a iixed frame and having overlapping rails, said device comprising a housing adapted to be secured to a first of said overlapping rails adjacent said xed frame, a rst locking plunger movable in said housing and adapted to extend through said rst rail into securing engagement with the second overlapping rail to lock said sashes against relative movement, a second locking plunger movable in said housing along an axis normal to the axis of said irst plunger for extending into securing engagement with said frame to prevent movement of said sashes relative to said frame, a pair of pivoted links connected to advance or retract the respective plungers, a cylinder lock in said housing a rotary plug, and means connecting said plug to actuate both of said pivoted links.
2. A device for securing a double hung window or the like having a pair of sashes slidable in a fixed frame and having overlapping rails, said device comprising a housing adapted to be secured to a first of said overlapping rails adjacent said lixed frame, a iirst locking plunger movable in said housing and adapted to extend through said iirst rail into securing engagement with the second overlapping rail to lock said sashes against relative movement, a second locking plunger movable in said housing along an axis normal to the axis of said irst plunger for extending into securing engagement with said frame to prevent movement of said sashes relative to said frame, a pair of actuating members connected to advance or retract the respective plungers, a cylinder lock in said housing having a rotary plug and a slide plate slidable in said housing connected to be actuated by said rotary plug and to actuate both of said actuating members.
3. A device for securing a double hung Window or the like having a pair of sashes slidable in a iixed frame and having overlapping rails, said device comprising a housing adapted to be secured to a first of said overlapping rails adjacent said fixed frame, a iirst locking plunger slidable in said housing and adapted to extend through said irst rail into securing engagement with the second overlapping rail to lock said sashes aganst relative movement, a second locking plunger slidable in said housing along an axis normal to the axis of said rst plunger for extending into securing engagement with said frame to prevent movement of said sashes relative to said frame, a pair of actuating members connected to advance or retract the respective plungers, a cylinder lock in said housing having a rotary plug, and a slide plate slidable in said housing having a pair of anges extending parallel to the axes of the respective plungers, means connecting said rotary plug to one of said iianges to cause sliding movement of said slide plate in response to turning of said plug, and connections connecting said ilanges to the respective actuating members to advance or retract said plungers in response to sliding movement of said slide plate.
