Description

(No Model.)
. M.- B. DODGE.
BOOK ORUSHER. No. 273,478. Patented M21126, 1883.
D OQOGOOOOO OOOQ OOOO O O'OO r i y NITED STATES PATENT Erica.
ROCK-CRUSH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,478, dated March 6, 1883.
ApplioationfiledOctoberlS,1882. (NomodeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILES B. DODGE, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Rock- Orusher; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in that class of machines used for crushing or breaking rock in which two jaws are employed to receive the rock between them, and-are made to approach and recede alter-' nately by suitable operating mechanism, which is connected with one or both jaws.
My invention consists in the combination, with the pivotedand stationary crushing-jaws, of peculiar dies constructed of relatively soft metal, and having hard-steel plugs embedded in them, as fully hereinafter explained.
Figure 1 is a view of a machine having my improved dies. Fig. 2 is a face View of one of the dies.
A B are two jaws inclined toward each other, so that there is a hopper-shaped space between them, approaching or becoming liarrower toward the bottom. In the present case, I have shown one of the jaws fixed and the other movable. The movable one is caused to alternately approach to and recede from the fixed one by suitable mechanism, as shown. In order to provide faces for these jaws to protect them from the abrading action of the rock, I employ dies 0, which are preferably made of wrought-iron and are secured to the j aw-plates by bolts 1). The crushing-surfaces of these jaws are bored full of holes, which, however, do
not extend entirely through, but are made deep enough to receive the steel plugs E, which are driven in so as to be flush with the surface, and they are near enough together to receive the greater part of the pressure of the rock which is being crushed. By this construction the faces of the dies are preserved from too rapid wear, and the crushing is more effectively done.
I am aware that a cast-iron runner for an ore-mill has been provided with hard metal strips set into it flush with its face; and I do not claim this feature, my device being adapted for use in connection with the pivoted jaw of a rock-breaker, and itis to this purpose I intend to confine it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a rock-crushing machine, the combination of the stationaryjaw A and the pivoted jaw B, adapted to operate in connection therewith,
with the dies 0, adapted to be attached to the faces of suchjaws, such dies being constructed of iron and having steel plugs embedded therein, so that their outer faces shall be flush with the-outer faces of the said dies.
' In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand.
MILES B. DODGE.
