UNITED STATES AXLE- PATENT OFFI E,
ROBERT CARTWBIGHT, OFROUHESIER, New YORK.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,463, dated March 6, 1883.
Application filed January '11, 1883. (ModeL) I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT CARTWRIG-HT, of Rochester, in the coun y of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Axle-Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to prevent sand and mud from working into an axle-box.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a hub provided with my improved axlebox. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view of the inner nd of my improved axle-box. Fig.3 is an inner end elevation of the same.
The axle-box A, secured in the hub B and surrounding the axle O, is provided at the end projecting from the inner end of the hub with two or more projections, D, which project from the inner end of the hub and over the edge of the collar E on the swell F. The edges of the projections D are beveled; or the projections canbe arranged on a wavy line or as a series of teeth. Allparts of the edge of the inner end of the axle-box project beyond the collar E, as shown by the dotted line, Fig. 1. The projections D on the axle-box act like the blades of a screw-propeller, and crowd and push 011' from the bedGr of the axle the mud and sand collecting on the same, and prevent sand or mud from working into the axle-box and cutting the same. The projections have their edges inclined toward each other at an easy angle, and thus very little motion is required to produce sufficient strain to force oft all dust and mud. The thickness of the axlebox may be increased at the inner end of the hub, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters I Patent, is-
An axle-box having its inner end projected over an axle-collar, E, beyond the hub, and provided, on its outer edge, with one or more bevels, D, adapted to push mud from the axlebed G, as described. v v
