WlNDOW-CORNICE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,459, dated March Application filed September 2, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK O. BURT, of Golumbns, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Gornices; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved extension-cornice. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section on the line 00 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is avertical cross-section on the line y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is a rear view, showing the cornice extended.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to that class of cornices which are provided with extensible wings, in order that they may be fitted to Windows of various widths; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same,

which will be hereinafter fully described, and

particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Arepresents thecentral part or body of the cornice, which may be molded or ornamented in any suitable manner, and which is provided on its rear side with longitudinal flanges B B at its upper and lower edges. Said flanges are connected by a central bridge-piece, '0, which, as well as the flanges, may be integral with the bodyA. The ends of the flanges are also connected by plates or cross-bars D, which serve to retain in position the extension pieces or wings E E. The latter, which are constructed,

in the usual manner, with angle-pieces F at their outer ends, are fitted to slide against the rear side of the main piece or body'A, between the flanges B B, the former of which is provided with a plate or rim, G, serving to keep the inner ends of the extension-slides in place. The inner ends of the wings or slides E are provided with inward-extending arms H, each secured by a screw, I, and a staple, J. The extreme projecting end of each arm H is provided with a notch, K.

Secured'to the bridge-piece C, between the arms H H, is a screw-eye, L, for which, however, a staple or a suitably-constructed pulley or equivalent device may be substituted. Staples M, encircling the arms H, are also secured to the bridge-piece for the purpose of guiding said arms.

N N are cords, one end of each of which is secured totthe inner end of one of the arms H, by passing it under the staple J, which .serves to secure said arm, and making a knot upon it, so as to prevent it from slipping out from thence. Each of the cords N is passed through the eye L and to the outer end of the arm H, projecting from the other slide, where it is adjusted in the notch K, drawn taut, and again knotted, so as to keep it in place. The method of attaching the cords may be varied, but the one herein described I have found convenient, simple, and useful.

The operation of my invention will be readily understood. When one of the wings is adjusted for the purpose of fitting the cornice to a particular window the other slide is, through the medium of the arms and cordsH N, simultaneously drawn out or pushed in to precisely the same extent, thus causing the appearance of the cornice to be always regular and synimetrical.

The combination, in an extension -cornice, of a center piece or body having a screweye, L, or its equivalent, with extension pieces or wings having inward-projecting arms H, secured to the inner ends of said wings by screws I and staples J, and provided at their outer ends with notches K and cords N N, having knotted ends, secured by the staples J, passed from thence through the eye L and to the outer ends of the arms H of the opposite slide, where each" cord is adjusted in the notch K, drawn taut, and knotted, as set forth.

2. The combination of the main piece A, having flanges B B, and bridge-piece G, the plates D, rim G, Wings E, having arms H, and the staples M, as set forth.
