UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY w. VOLTZ, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
DOCUMENT AND FILE CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,408, dated March 6,1883.
Application filed January 19, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY W. VOLTZ, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on a Receiver for Valuable Documents, Bills, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to receivers and files for the convenient and safe keeping of documents, bills, and other valuable papers; and it consists in the novel combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully setforth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings already referred to, which serve to illustrate m'y said invention more fully, Figure l is a perspective view of the file-case. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are edge views, and Fig. 5 a transverse sectional elevation.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
A A in these drawings indicate the two body portions of my file-case. These two portions are box-shaped, and hingedtogether at B. They are provided with pivoted handles U, for convenience of transportation, and with hooks and eyes or similar means, D, to enable the two portions or sections A A being securely held together in a shut or closed condition. In the interior of the sections A A are arranged a series of pockets, E, produced by providing said sections with a number oflongitudinal slats or boards, F, having bottom pieces, G, and a suitable nu mber of vertical partitions, H, the series of pockets in each section being terrace-like arranged, so that access may be readilyhacl to any one of the pockets E without disturbing the contents of the remaining pockets. The face of the pockets is provided with an index, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, said index consistingeither in letters or words of reference, numbers, or any other means whereby is to serve as a receiver for bills in conjunction with any system of bookkeeping, in the following manner: The business transactions of a single day having been entered into the day-book, blotter, or journal, I proceed to enter the same immediately upon the bills to be subsequently presented to the customer. These bills I then fold to a convenient size to fit the pockets E, indorse the same on the upper end, and then file them in the respective pocket. Any subsequent transaction with the same customer is entered into the bill already on file, so that at any moment, when called upon to do so, I can render to the customer (or to all my customers, for that matter) his bill. The device may, furthermore, be used for keeping valuable documents in safe-vaults, &c., without change or modification.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure tome by Letters Patent of the United States- A portable case for files, consisting of two hinged sections, A A, provided with handles and fastenings D, each section being constructed with vertical boards F, parallel to the back thereof, vertical partitions E at right angles thereto, and horizontal bottom pieces,
these parts forming two sets of terraced series of rigid file-holding compartments, each upper row of' the latter being located farther back than the one belowit, substantially as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
A. V. VOLTZ. Attest:
