Application April 24, 1953, Serial No. 351,062
1 Claim. (Cl. 81-15) (Granted under Title 35, U. S. Code (1952), see. 266) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
The present invention concerns a stubbing tool and in particular concerns a pliers-type of stubbing tool in which there is provided adjacent the jaws a cam operable to bend a workpiece about one of the jaws gripping the workpiece.
An object of the invention is to provide a tool.
Another object is to provide a stubbing tool.
Another object is to provide a pliers-type stubbing tool that can be used for bending a workpiece about one jaw of the pliers that holds the workpiece.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of this invention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view showing a preferred embodiment in open position, and
Fig. 2 is a view showing the embodiment in closed position.
In Fig. 1 there is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention comprising a handle 11 having an enlarged portion 12 terminating in a jaw 13 provided with a serrated gripping face 14. Mounted on enlarged portion 12 is a pintle 15.
Mounted for swinging movement on handle 11 is a second handle 18 having a jaw 19 provided with a serrated gripping face 20. Handle 18 is formed with an elongated slot 21 through which extends pintle 15 so that handle 18 can swing upon handle 11 and so that jaw 19 can be adjusted to provide a selected clearance between jaw 19 and jaw 13. A stop 22 is provided to limit movement of handle 18 toward handle 11 and to prevent jaw 19 from swinging past jaw 13. The distance from pintle 15 to jaw 13 is longer than the distance from pintle 15 to jaw 19 so that when jaw 19 is swung into closed position it is located between jaw 13 and pintle 15 with serrated portions 20 and 14 in opposition. A workpiece 23 can be gripped between jaws 19 and 13.
A third handle 26 is mounted for swinging movement upon handle 11 by means of a pintle 27. Pintle 27 is disposed adjacent jaw 13 and to one side of a line between pintle 15 and jaw 13. Handle 26 is enlarged to provide a cam 28 that upon swinging of handle 26 is adapted for movement toward and away from jaw 13. A stop 29 is provided to limit movement of handle 26 toward handle In operation as seen in Fig. 1 handle 18 is swung into open position in a direction away from handle 11 and handle 26 is swung into open position in a direction toward handle 11. Under these conditions the workpiece, which may be a strap of metal, is placed against jaw 13. Handle 18 is then closed in a direction toward handle 11 so that workpiece 23 is gripped tightly between jaws 13 and 19 as shown in Fig. 2. Handle 26 is then swung away from handle 11 into closed position so that cam 28 forces workpiece 23 about and across the top of jaw 13 to provide a bend in workpiece 23 as shown in Fig. 2.
Workpiece 23 is removed by reversing the operation which consists in swinging handle 26 toward handle 11 to open position and swinging handle 18 away from handle 11 into open position.
Obviously many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in the light of the above teachings. It is therefore to be understood that within the scope of the appended claim the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described.
We claim:
A tool comprising a first handle, a planar serrated jaw fixed to one end of said first handle to extend transversely of and to face toward the opposite end of said first handle, a second handle, a second planar serrated jaw fixed to one end of said second handle to extend transversely of and to face away from the opposite end of said second handle, a pintle mounted on one of said handles, the other of said handles formed with an elongated slot to register with said pintle whereby said handles are joined for pivotal movement with respect to each other with said first jaw at a greater distance from said pintle than said second jaw so that relative pivotal movement of said handles causes said jaws when in closed position to be disposed with said second jaw adjacent to said first jaw and between said first jaw and said pintle to define a spacing between said jaws that is variable in accordance with the position of said pintle in the elongated slot whereby a workpiece can be accommodated between said jaws and extend in a direction substantially perpendicular to a line between said first jaw and said pintle, a third handle, a peripheral cam fixed to one end of said third handle, and a second pintle mounted on said first handle adjacent said first jaw and to one side of a line between said first jaw and said firstmentioned pintle, said third handle pivotally mounted on said second pintle, said peripheral cam upon pivotal movement of said third handle being adapted for movement toward or away from said first jaw whereby a workpiece that is gripped between said first and second jaws is adapted to be progressively bent about said first jaw.
