2 Claims. (Cl. 16-111) This invention relates to a handle assembly and has particular reference to a handle construction for an oven door or the like.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved handle construction for an oven door.

A further object of the invention is to provide a handle assembly which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.

Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and may be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which there is one sheet, which by way of illustration show a preferred embodiment of the invention and what I now consider to be the best mode in which 1 have contemplated applying the principles of my invention. Other embodiments of the invention may be used without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.

in Fig. 1 there is disclosed a panel which may be the outer panel of an oven door or the like to which the handle assembly is secured. The handle assembly com prises a pair of mounting posts 12 which are identical in construction and an elongated handle member 14 secured at its ends to the mounting posts 12.

Each of the mounting brackets 12 comprises a hollow body of suitable material, preferably plastic, having an end wall 16 which is disposed in a vertical plane in the assembly. The peripheral walls of the hollow body 12 include top and bottom walls 18 and 24 a wall 22, and a Wall 24 also disposed in a vertical plane and adapted to seat against the outer surface of the door panel 10. The top and bottom walls 18 and 29 are provided with generally horizontally disposed slots 26 adjacent the wall 24, and slots 28 disposed at the ends of the wall 22. The mounting posts 12 are symmetrical with respect to a horizontal plane through the center thereof so that the posts may be used interchangeably at either the rightc-r the left-hand end of the assembly.

The end wall 16 of each of the mounting posts is provided with a boss 36 projecting therefrom adjacent the side wall 22, and the boss 30 provides a means for anchoring a fastening element in the form of a substantially U-shaped spring clip 32 to the mounting post. The rounded bases 34 of the spring fasteners 32 are telescoped onto the bosses 3'1) with the legs 36 of the fastener projecting through a cutout or slot 38 provided in the vertical wall 24 of the post which is seated against the door panel 10. The legs 36 of the fasteners project 2,731,652 Federated Jan. 24, 1956 ICQ beyond the outer surfaces of the vertical wall 24, and the outer ends 40 of the spring fasteners are disposed in diverging relation. The handle member 14 comprises a horizontally disposed strip of suitable material having its top and bottom edges curled inwardly as at 42, the handle being shaped to conform with and seat against the outer surfaces of the peripheral Walls of the mounting posts 12. as shown. The curled or channel-shaped edges 42 of the handle 14 are inserted into the

26 and 28, and the side edges of the handle member seat against the bottom of the slots. The handle may be sprung slightly to assemble the same to the mounting posts, if desired, and will be free from rattles when assembled to the posts.

The boss 3t projecting from the end wall 16 of the mounting post has a shoulder 44 against which the base portion 34 of the spring fastener is seated, and the edge 46 of the opening 38 in the vertical wall 24 is disposed in the same plane as the shoulder 44, the ends of the spring fastener 32 being seated against the edge 46 of the wall 24 as indicated in Fig. 4. The ends of the slots 26 and 23, which provide for the attachment of the handle 14 to the mounting posts, are disposed approximately in the plane of the adjacent edges of the spring egs 36.

The manner of assembly of the handle to the panel 16) is illustrated in Fig. 3, from which it may be seen that the spring fasteners 32 are first anchored to the mounting posts 12 and the handle 14 inserted into the

The assembly of the handle and two mounting posts thus formed may be easily assembled to the panel by first inserting one of the diverging ends 443 of each spring 32 through a suitable opening 50 provided in the panel 14), and thereafter compressing the spring legs 36 to an extent sufficient to permit insertion of the other ends it? of the springs through the openings 59. Upon release of the springs, the diverging ends 40 thereof will engage the upper and lower edges of the openings Ell in the panel and tend to cam the handle assembly firmly against the outer surface of the panel. The spring elements 32 provide the sole means for fastening the handle assembly to the door panel, and it will thus be seen that the handle 14- may be assembled to the mounting posts 12 and the handle assembly thereafter mounted on the door very simply and without the use of any of the usual independent fastening means employed in the art.

While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that this is capable of modification and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall Within the purview of the following claims.

Iclaim:

1. A handle assembly for a door panel or the like, comprising a pair of mounting posts each comprising a hollow body having a vertically disposed end wall and peripheral walls projecting laterally from said end wall, said body being open on the side thereof opposite said end wall and having a vertical surface disposed normal to said end wall adapted to be seated against the door panel, said posts being arranged in spaced relation with said peripheral walls projecting toward each other in the assembly, said peripheral Walls having spaced slots therein extending from said open sides, an elongated handle member having curled longitudinal edges receivable in and seated against the bottoms of the slots in said walls with the end portions of said handle overlying said Wall between said slots for securing said handle to said posts, said posts each having a boss projecting inwardly from said end wall and spaced from said peripheral walls, and a substantially U-shaped spring member having its central portiomtelescoped "onto" said boss, said vertical surface of said post having an opening therein, theends of said spring projecting through said opening beyond said surface for insertion in an opening in the door panel.
