PATENT APPARATUS FOR HEATING AIR OR CONDENSING STEAM.,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,886, dated February 2'?, 1883.

Beit known that I, EDWARD KENDALL, of Cambridgeport, in the'county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus t'orHeating Air or Gondensing Steam, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specifireference to the description ot' the drawings, n
and to the claim to be hereinafter given.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan of my improved apparatus with the upper coveringplate removed and a portion of the upper head ofthe steam-chamber broken away, and showing the air-tubes and the partitions in section on line x :c on Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section ot' the same on line y y on Fig. 1.
A and A are two castings, preferably oval in plan, and each composed of a head, c, vertical wall b, and cross-partitions c.
` B and B' are detachable covers, secured to the castings A and A', respectively, by means of suitable bolts, which screw into th'e wall l) and partitions c, thus forming air-tight joints between said covers and thecastingsA and A', and forming in each of said castings a series ofchambers, d, c,f, and g, or d', c', f', and g. The heads a ofthe castings A and A' are perforated to receive the ends of a series of clustgrs, C, C', C2, C3, C4, C5, and G6, of small pipes, so set therein as to form steam-tightjoints, and to help-to maintain said heads at the proper distance apart. The castings A and A' are further connected together by the casing D, ot' plate-iron, firmly riveted thereto and calked, so as to form steam-tight joints, and inclosing the steam-chamber E, across which the clusters of small pipes extend, as shown.
F is a steam-inlet pipe, which may be connected with the exhaust-pipe of a steam-engine or other steam-supply,as may be desired; and F is the steam-discharge pipe, and G is a valve or gate, by means of which said discharge-pipe may be closed or opened at will.
H is a pipe connected by the branches h, h', h2, and h3 with the interior of the steam-chamber E,and leading to and communicating with the interior of the hot-well I, into which the water produced by condensation of the steam flows, and from which it may be pumped to any desired point by the pump J.
I prefer to use air instead of water as a medium for condensing the steam; and to this end I provide the casting A with an air-inlet oritice, K, of large area, and connect therewith the pipe K, leading to the blower L, by means of which a current of cold air may be forced at considerable speed into the chamber d, cluster of pipes C, chamber d', cluster of pipes C', chamber c, cluster of pipes C2, chamber c', cluster of pipes G3, chamber f,
`cluster of pipes C4,chamberf,clusterof pipes C5, chamber g, cluster of pipes G6, chambery', and the discharge-orih'ce M, in the end of the cast-ing A opposite to the inlet-orifice K, into the open air, if the apparatus is being used as a condenser; or it may be conveyed by suitable pipes to any desired point for heating rooms, if desired.
The steam-chamber E is divided into several compartments by two sets of partitions, N and O, the former rising from the bottom to near the top of the chamber E and the latter depending from the top to near the bottom of the chamber E in such a manner that steam entering at F will completely envelop the cluster C of small pipes, be compelled to rise to the top of the chamber E. to pass over a part-ition, N, and then pass downward to the bottom ot' chamber E, completely enveloping the cluster C5 of the pipes, to pass beneath the partition O to the next compartment, and so on till it has iilled the chamber E. and completely enveloped all parts of all of the pipes in the several clusters.
The operation ot' my invention is as follows: If it is desired to use it as a condenser, the valve or gate is closed, steam is admitted at F, and the blower L is set in motion to forcea roo current of cold air through the several chambers d, @,f, g, d', e,f, and g and the several clusters ofv pipes C, G, G2, C3, C4, G5, and O6, as before described. The pipes through which the cold air passes take up the heat from the surrounding` steam, and thus condense it, and the water resulting from said condensation falls to the bottom of the chamber E, and Hows through the pipes 7L, 7L', h2, Irl, and H to the hot-well I, from which it is discharged by the pump J, through suitable pipes, to the interior ofthe boiler, to be again madeinto steam.
By using air instead ot'water for condensing the steam the water resulting from such condensation is free from lime and other impurities which enter into and form a part ot' most waters in their natural state, and hence is better suited for feeding steam-boilers.
If it is desired to use this apparatus for heating airt'or use in warming buildings, the air-discharge oritice M is connected by suitable pipes with the rooms tobe heated, the valve or gate G is opened, and the blower Lis set in motion to force the air through the several clusters ot' pipes in succession, said air in its passage being exposed to and taking up a portion of the heat from the hot steam flowing through the chamber E and surrounding the several clusters ot' pipes.
By this arrangement fresh, pure air heated to the desired temperature may be supplied to factories and manufacturing establishments at a very trilling cost.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the steam-chamber E, provided with the partitions N and O, and a steam-supply pipe, two series of air-chambers arranged upon opposite sides of said steamchamber, a series of clusters ot' pipes connecting said air-chambers, means of forcing air through said air-chambers and series of clusters of pipes, the pipe H,one or more pipes connecting said pipe with the interior of the steam-chamber E, andthe pump J, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially1 as and for the purposes described.
