1 Claim. (Cl. 205-29) This invention relates to wire drawing dies and, more particularly, to a novel construction for an individual die unit by which such unit is provided with a plurality of drawing orifices, preferably orifices of the same nominal size, for use in drawing a plurality of strands of wires simultaneously.
Wire drawers of the type used in advance of a coldheader are now well known, but heretofore have been capable of operating on only a single strand of wire. More recently, it has become desirable to have such a wire drawer supply two or more strands of drawn wire simultaneously to the header.
As its principal object, the present invention accordingly provides a novel form of multiple orifice die unit which enables such a wire drawer to operate simultaneously on a plurality of strands of wire.
Another object is to provide a novel multiple orifice drawing die in which truncated or segment-shaped die members having the individual drawing orifices therein are seated in a hollow holder or adapter with adjacent portions of the die members in meeting engagement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent in the drawing and in the following detailed description.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming a part of this specification:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing a wire drawing die embodying the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the die, as indicated by the irregular section line 22 of Fig. 1.
The novel die unit is intended for use in a wire drawer, such as in a wire drawer of the kind shown in United States Patent 2,226,400, granted December 24, 1940. When the die unit 10 is incorporated in this form of wire drawer it is mounted in the reciprocating die box thereof although this die unit can also be used with a stationary support or die box.
The drawing die unit 10 comprises a hollow rigid holder or adapter 11 and a plurality of die members, in this instance, two such die members 12 and 13 mounted in such holder. The holder 11 is here shown as comprising a metal body having a cylindrical outer surface 14 and a pocket or recess 15 extending into such body from one side thereof. The holder 11 is provided with an opening 16 in the other side thereof which extends through the transverse end wall 17 substantially on the axis of the unit and communicates with the pocket 15.
The pocket 15 is of a lobular shape by reason of the fact that it is defined by a plurality of intersecting recesses corresponding in number with the die members of the unit, in this instance, two such recesses 19 and 20. The recesses 19 and 20 have the shape (in plan view) of a circular segment by reason of the fact that these recesses intersect each other on a plane 21 which, in this instance, is a vertical plane extending through the unit in substantially normal relation to the transverse horizontal axis 18. 2 degrees and represent similar lobes lying in'symrnetrical relation on opposite sides of the plane of intersection. The horizontal axis 18 is alsothe common diameter of the circular segments .19 and 20.
The die members, 12 and 13 are of the shape of circular segments or truncated cylindrical members corresponding in size and shapewith the size and shape of the inter secting recesses 19 and 20. Each of the die members .has a curved partial outer surface which is an arc of a circle and is of somewhat greater than degrees extent. On their adjacent sides, the die members 12 and 13 have fiat surfaces 22 which are in meeting relation or abutting engagement with each other when the die members are seated in the lobular recesses 19 and 20. The die members 12 and 13 can also be referred to as being of a lobular shape.
The die members 12 and 13 have orifices or drawing passages 23 and 24 extending axially therethrough in substantially parallel relation to each other and which drawing orifices lie within the confines of the opening 16 of the holder 11. The drawing orifices 23 and 24 will accommodate the wire strands 25 and 26, respectively, during a drawing operation being performed simultaneously on such strands.
The strands 25 and 26 are supplied to the drawing orifices 23 and 24 by movement in the direction indicated by the arrows 27, and the drawn strands 25 and 26 leave the drawing orifices through the opening 16. The drawing orifices are defined, in part, by hardened metal inserts 28 formed of tungsten carbide or any other suitable composition or alloy. The inserts 28 have the convergent-divergent portion 29 of the drawing orifice 24 located therein.
The die members 12 and 13 are adapted to be seated in the lobes of the lobular pocket 15 by axial movement into the recesses 19 and 20 and when the die members are fully seated in the pocket, they are held against arcuate shifting therein by the abutting engagement of the flat sur faces 22 of the adjacent sides of these die members. Chattering of the die members 12 and 13 in the pocket 15, as well as movement of the die members out of the pocket, is prevented by clamping screws 30 and 31 which extend through threaded openings of the holder 11 and engage the flats 32 and 33 provided on the respective die members.
From the foregoing detailed description and the accompanying drawing it will now be readily understood that this invention provides a novel drawing die unit by which a plurality of strands of wire can be drawn simultaneously when such die unit is employed in a wire drawer, such as in the die box of a reciprocating wire drawer being used in advance of a cold-header or other fabricating ma chine. Additionally, it will be seen that this invention provides a novel construction for such a die unit in which segment-shaped or truncated cylindrical die members are seated in a lobular pocket of a hollow holder or adapter, with flat surfaces on the adjacent portions of the die members in abutting engagement with each other.
Although the novel drawing die unit has been illustrated and described herein to a somewhat detailed extent, it will be understood, of course, that the invention is not to be regarded as being limited correspondingly in scope, but includes all changes and modifications coming within the spirit of the invention and the terms of the claim hereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
