Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR E. \VEATHERHEAD, OF PEEKSKILL, NEW YORK.
FACING FOR FOUNDRY-CASTINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272.808, dated February 20, 1883. Application filed July 13, 1882'. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR E. \VEATHER- HEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peekskill,in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovementsin Facings for Foundry-Oastings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a composition to he applied to the mold after the pattern has been removed from the sand, for the purpose of imparting a finer facing to the finished casting.
The invention consists essentially in the combination of emery, clay, and plumbago,
either with or without the addition of other ingredients hereinafter referred to.
The composition I prefer to use consists of powdered emery, five parts; powdered clay, two parts; powdered plum bago, one part,
which ingredients are thoroughly mixed together.
In some cases I may add soapstone or powdered hard coal, or both, according to the nature of the casting to be made.
2 5 In using this composition, the mold is prepared in the usual manner, and after the pattern is removed the powder is applied to the sand to form the facing. By this means a smoother and finer casting is obtained, which makes it very desirable tor all kinds of small and tine work. v
In some cases I use the powdered emery alone, Nos. 120, 140, and 160, called emeryflour, in a similar manner to that above described, and find it to be a very effectual facmg.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let-
