3 Claims. (Cl. 153-79) The present invention relates to a flanging tool and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a simple and compact tool for fianging one end of a section of pipe, particularly pipe which is provided with a plated outer surface which is desirable to leave unblemished by such flanging operation. The present device is designed to provide a flange which will not split.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efiicient In use.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for adjusting the same whereby diiferent lengths of pipe may be utilized and flanged therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, a novel nut and washer arrangement forming a part of the invention, for moving a mandrel likewise forming a part of the invention.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which may be easily manipulated by means of a wrench and a brace, no other additional tools being necessary.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:

Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l but showing the device as it appears at the beginning of a flanging operation, and showing certain elements in elevation,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a device of the character set forth comprising an end block generally indicated at 10 whose outer end portion 11 is substantially square in cross-sectional area whereby the same may be grasped by a vice 12 or the like and whose inner end is circular in shape, as indicated at 13. An annular outstanding collar 14 integrally interconnects the portions 11 and 13 of the member 10.
An elongated exteriorly threaded rod 15 extends threadably into the inner portion of the member 10 and is provided with a transverse opening 16 adjacent its inner end whereby the same may be permanently aifixed to the block 10 by means of a'transversely extending rivet 17, the block 10 being provided with a transverse opening 18 for the reception of such rivet.
A circular or ring-shaped anvil 19 concentrically surrounds the rod 15 and is provided with a cutaway portion providing an annular shoulder 20. A cylindrical casing 21 abuts against the shoulder 20 at one of its ends and surrounds the cylindrical portion 13 and abuts against the shoulder 14 at the other end.
A circular adjustable stop member 22 is threadably mounted upon the rod 15 and is provided'with a pair of diametrically opposed transversely extending openings 23. The stop member is provided with a plurality of concentric shoulders 24 upon its inner face which shoulders are respectively adapted to abut pipe sections of different diameters.
An elongated hollow wrench tube 25 is provided at its inner end with an integrally formed pair of diametend of the wrench tube 25 is provided with suitable openings for the reception of a transversely extending handle 27. an outwardly formed annular shoulder 30 as indicated at 31.
A washer 32 is provided with an inwardly directed radially extending lug 33 which is adapted to slidably engage in a longitudinally extending slot 34 formed in the outer end portion of the rod 15. A nut 35 is adapted to threadably engage the outer end portion of the rod 15. A wrench is indicated at 36 and a section of pipe 37 to be provided with a flange 38 is also shown in the drawing.
In operation, it will be apparent that with the elements 28, 32 and 35 removed from the rod 15, the tube Wrench may be inserted into the casing 21 while encompassing the rod 15 until the keys 26 engage in the openings 23, whereupon the tube wrench 25 may be turned by means of the handle 27 to thus place the stop member 22 where desired with respect to the anvil 19, such distance being determined by the length of the Patented Dec. 20, 1955 section of pipe 37 to be flanged. When the stop member 22 has thus been positioned, the tube Wrench 25 may be removed from the remainder of the device whereupon the mandrel 28 may be moved inwardly upon the rod until its innermost portion enters into the outer end of the section of pipe 37 to be flanged, such section 37 being previously placed within the device 'with its inner end against one of the shoulders 24.
The nut 32 will then be placed upon the rod 15 with its key 33 in slidable engagement within the groove 34 after which the nut 35 may be threaded upon the outermost end portion of the rod 15. The block 10 may then be placed and secured in the vice 12 to prevent the same from turning movement whereupon the nut 35 may be turned by means of the wrench 36 thus forcing the washer 32 inwardly and in this manner forcing the mandrel 28 likewise in an inward direction. This action will cause the beveled face 31 of the mandrel 28 to bear against the outermost end portion of the section of pipe 37 which is retained in alignment for the shaping or flanging operation by ring-shaped anvil 19 to thus apply an evenly distributed pressure against the outermost end portion of the section of pipe 37 and force such outermost end portion to form the flange 38, such even distribution of pressure acting to form such flange without splitting or the like.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
'What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a block, a ring-shaped anvil, an elongated cylindrical casing inter-connecting said block and anvil, a rod aflixed to said block and extending concentrically through said casing and said anvil, a stop member mounted on said rod and adapted to abut one end of a pipe to be flanged, means for selectively positioning said stop member on said rod in spaced relation to said anvil, a mandrel longitudinally slidable upon the free end portion of said rod, and means for forcing said mandrel inwardly against the other end of said pipe to be flanged whereby to form an'outwardly extending flange upon the same.
2. A device of the character described comprising a block, a ringshaped anvil, an elongated cylindrical casing inter-connecting said block and anvil, a rod aflixed to said block and extending concentrically through said casing and said anvil, a stop member mounted on said rod and adapted to abut one end of a pipe to be flanged, means for selectively positioning said stop member on said rod in spaced relation to said anvil, a mandrel longitudinally slidable upon the free end of said rod, and means for forcing said mandrel inwardly against the outer end of said pipe to be flanged whereby to form an outwardly extending flange upon the same, said last named means comprising a washer having a radially inwardly directed dog, said rod having a longitudinal groove in the outer end portion thereof and said dog being slidable in said groove, said Washer adapted to bear against said mandrel, and a nut on the outer end of said rod and adapted to bear against said washer.
3. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein said stop member is provided with a plurality of concentric shoulders each adapted to abut a pipe section of a certain diameter.
