DISH HOLDDOWN DEVICE Filed Sept. 8, 1951 zslmmll 1mm (Ittorneg United States Patent O DISH HOLDDOWN DEVICE oigan o. Ripley, Jr., Girard Township, Erie caunty, Pa., assignor of one-half to Pauline M. Ripley, Girard Township, Erie County, Pa.
Application September 8, 1951, Serial No. 245,659 1 Claim. (Cl. 248-361) This invention relates generally to a quickly attachable and detachable fastening device and more particularly to a receptacle, toy, bottle holder, etc. and a fastening device in combination therewith.
My novel combined receptacle and fastening device therefor fastens a receptacle onto the tray or platform of a high chair so that a baby may eat from the receptacle without injuring himself through hooks, clamps, and other fastening devices heretofore used. Attempts have heretofore been made to hold a bowl or the like onto the platform or tray of a high chair by placing hooks on the rim thereof and securing the straps underneath the platform. Because of the large openings beneath the straps, it was easy for the baby to shove its arms underneath the straps and remove the hooks so that these prior devices were of practically no value. Rubber suction devices have been tried but the tray surface must be absolutely smooth and even then, the bowl or dish can be tilted. These devices are difficult to remove from a table or tray. Other complicated devices such as bent wire devices have been devised for holding down bowls and plates onto a table for a baby but these have been costly, considerable time is necessary for securing the fastening device, they can injure the child, and the child can remove or unfasten these prior devices.
It is, accordingly, an object of my invention to provide a combined eating receptacle, toy or the like and fastening means therefor for fastening the same onto a babys platform on a high chair which is simple in construction, economical in cost, economical in manufacture, and easy to fasten and maintain on a chair.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combined object holder and fastening means therefor whereby eating utensils, rattles, and the like may be snap connected thereto.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combined object holder and fastening means therefor whereby bowls, plates, bottle holders, and the like may be attached to the platform or tray on a baby chair in a minimum of time.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combined object holder and fastening means therefor for fastening a bowl, plate, bottle, or the like onto the platform of a babys chair wherein the fastening connection is below the table and it is practically impossible for the baby to extend its hands or arms underneath the table to unfasten the connection.
Other objects of my invention will become evident from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a bowl secured to the table of a babys chair by my novel fastening member;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the bowl shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the bowl shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the fastening member in Fig. r
1 in an extended condition;
2 Fig. 5 is a ,side elevational view of the fastening memberzs'how'n in Fig. 4;. d
Fig. 6 is aside elevational view of a toy secured to a table with my novelfastening device shown in Fig. 4;
Fig.4 7 isy a bottle holderusecured to a table by my novel fastening device shown in Fig. 4;
Fig. Svis a plan view of a modified form of the fastening member shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 9 is aside elevational view of a bowl secured to a table-by the fastening member shown in Fig. 8.
Referring now to the drawings, I show in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive for the purposes of illustration a bowl, container or receptacley 1 having an outwardly flanged bead 2 on the bottom thereof engaged by the central circular portion of my novel fastening member 4. The flanged bead 2 may comprise circumferentially. spaced projections and it may be located in any vertical position relative to the outer side of the bowl 1. The fastening member 4 has outwardly extending straps 5 and 6 attached theretoarid forming part thereof, the strap 5 preferably having an elastic portion 5a.v The strap 5 has a snap connection member 7 for; detachably securing an eating utensil,A rattle or the like 8 on a cord 9 having a mating connection to the snap connection member 7, thus preventing a baby fromy throwing. the eating utensil or other object ont-11e cordv 9 to the iioor. The elastic portion 5a of the strap 5 has an outwardly extending male fastening member 11 and the strap 6 has longitudinally spaced female fastening membersw12 for snap V connection to the male fastening member 11 to secure the straps 5 and 6 together underneath a tray 10 of a high chair as shown in Fig. l. Any suitable conventional form of snap or other connection may be utilized for this purpose without departing from my invention. It will be noted that male fastening member 11 must be pulled laterally outwardly to disconnect it from the female fastening members 12, thereby permitting a baby to pull longitudinally on the strap 5 without disconnecting the fastening members 11 and 12.
In Fig. 6, I show a toy 13 with an outwardly extending flanged bead 14 on the bottom thereof for locking engagement by the circular portion 3 of my fastening member 4 shown in Figs. 4 and 5 to secure the toy 13 to the table or platform 10. A handle 15 is provided to rock the toy 13. In Fig. 7, I show a bottle holder 16 having an outwardly extending anged bead 17 on the bottom thereof for engagement by the circular portion 3 of my novel fastening member 4 shown in Fig. 3 for fastening same to the tray 10. A handle 18 is provided so that the baby can pull the bottle holder 16 toward him. The receptacle 1, toy 13, and bottle holder 16 are only shown as illustrative of many various types of receptacles, toys, bottle holders, and many other objects which may be utilized with my novel fastening member 4 shown in Figs. 3 and 4 as long as there is an outwardly extending bead, projections, or the like extending outwardly from the side thereof.
In utilizing my novel fastening device, it is only necessary that the object to be held such as the receptacle 1 be seated on the tray or table 10 and the circular portion 3 of the fastening member 4 disposed thereover and on top of the bead 2 of the receptacle 1 and the straps 5 and 6 are connected underneath the table 10 by connection ofthe male and female fastening members 11 and 12. The elastic portion 5a of the strap 5 has enough elasticity to hold the circular member 3 of the fastening member 4 firmly onto the tray 10 or any other table or platform while still allowing some tilting movement. A spoon, knife, fork, rattle, or any other object S on a cord 9 with a snap connection may be connected to one or more snap connections 7 on the strap 5. It will be noted that the fastening member 4 is substantially in the plane of the table 10 so that a child would have great difficulty remov- Patented Dec. 13, 1955 Y 3 Y ing it and it would be only with diculty that it could get its fingers underneath thereof. In no foreseeable Way could my novel fastening device injure a child.
In the modified Vform of my invention shown in Figs. 8 and 9, l utilize mated straps 20 and 21 havinglooped4 ends 22 and 23, respectively. yThestrap 20V lisfpassed throughthe looped end 23 on the strap 21 and the strap 21 is passed through the looped end 22 of theV mating strap r20 as shown in Fig. 8 Yand, thus, a central loop is formed which may be disposed around a receptacley 2 4 as shown in Fig'. 9. The outer ends of the straps 20 and 21 are pulled tightly, thereby Yclosing the loop formed by the straps 20 and 21 around the receptacle 24 and they are then secured underneath a table 25 as shown in Fig.Y 9 by means of a male snap connecting member 26 and a female snap connecting member 27 in the straps 20 and 21, respectively. The strap 20 preferably has an elastic portion 28.
It will be evident from the foregoing description that I have provided a novel combination of a fastening device Vand a receptacle, toy, bottle holder or any other object usable by a baby so that the object may be quickly attached to and detached from a table on a baby chair or any other like table or platform in a matter of seconds so that the object cannot be displaced. The fastening device is such that it is practically impossible for a baby f to unfasten it and it provides means for attaching eating utensils, toys, rattles, and the like thereto.
Various changes may be made in the specific embodiment of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
In combination, a dish and a clamping device for clamping said dish to a table, said dish being generally cylindrical in shape and terminating at its lower end in a tiange generally concentric to said cylindrical portion, said clamping device comprising a one piece strap having an opening therethrough formed in an lintermediate portion thereof With the ends of said strap extending outwardly therefrom, said opening in said strap being substantially the same size as the outer periphery of said cylindrical'portion of said dish, said openingV in said strap being adapted to receive said cylindrical portion of said dish with said strap resting atwise on said llangeY around said opening, said ends of said strap being adapted to extend around a table top and be attached together thereunder whereby said dish is adapted to be held to said table top.
