1 Claim. 01. 153-1 This invention relates to pressing apparatus, and it has special reference to such apparatus for applying embracing binding clips or bands to multi-part members, such particularly as pre-formed armature coils.
In the formation of such coils the winding thereor ordinarily leaves the strands in more or less non-compact condition, and in order that they may be in proper form for installation it is essential that the strands be compressed into compact arrangement and thus held by appropriate embracing bands or clips usually of strip form passed around the groups of strands and embracing the same and pressed into flat, intimate engagement, and hence into substantially cross-sectional conformity, therewith.
In order that proper compacting of the strands of the coils, and application of the clips or bands thereto, may be accomplished, assuming that the coils are of the usual rectangular cross-section, pressure must be applied in two directions, namely flatwise and edgewise of the coils.
With these requirements in mind, one object of the invention is to provide apparatus capable of applying pressure, preferably successively, in these two directions.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a single, relatively simple, apparatus, means for supporting a coil winding with partially closed embracing binding clips or bands applied thereto, and applying pressure flatwise and edgewise to the coil and clips or bands while the coil is thus supported.
A further object is to provide apparatus of this character in which the pressing members are fluid actuated as by so-called hydraulic cylinder means conveniently regulated by pedal operated control means of known type, thus leaving the operators hands free for manipulation of the coils with respect to the pressing mechanism.
A still further object is to so form the coil supporting and pressing members of the pressing mechanism that they may be replaceable to adapt the apparatus to the pressing of coils of various styles or types and dimensions.
Still another object is to provide in the coil contacting faces of the supporting and pressing members recesses or depressions substantially conforming to the crosssectional dimensions or the material from which the clips or bands are formed, in order that although, during the pressing operations, both the coil and clips or bands will'be properly compacted and alfixed, respectively, the clips or bands will not tend to become embedded in or injure the insulation of the strands forming the coils.
The invention comprises a coil pressing and clip applying apparatus preferably of vise type, including a fixed jaw and a movable jaw for applying pressure to a coil and its clips or bands in one direction, preferably flatwise of-the coil, a coil supporting member which may be attached to one of said jaws, a presser member movable toward and away from said supporting member for applying pressure to the coil in a direction substantially normal to the direction in which said jaws function, that is to say preferably edgewise of the coil, means under control of the operator for actuating said movable jaw 2,726,700 Patented Dec. 13, 1955 and said presser member to apply strand-compacting and clip-clinching pressure to said coil and clips, and means for automatically retracting said movable jaw and presser member after completion of the pressing operation at the will of the operator, all as will be explained hereinafter more fully and finally claimed.

Figs. 7 and 8 show, respectively, in fragmentary transverse section, a coil of the type shown in Figs. 4 and 5, with clips applied, before and after pressing.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the apparatus is mounted upon a table 1, but it may, obviously, be mounted upon a bench or other stand or support.
The vise-like press comprises a body 2, bolted or otherwise secured to its support 1, having a fixed jaw-carrying arm 3 provided with guide faces 4 upon which is mounted a slidable jaw carrier 5 attached to the piston rod 6 of a hydraulic cylinder 7 secured to an extension 8 of the body 2. This hydraulic cylinder and piston mechanism is of the conventional type in which only one fluid passage communicates with the cylinder and serves for both inlet and exhaust of the pressure fluid, so that the piston is moved outward (to the right, Fig. l) by fluid pressure and is retracted by a spring 9 anchored at its ends to the body extension 8 and slidable jaw carrier 5.
A standard 10 aflixed to the slidable jaw carrier 5 has at its upper end a laterally oflstanding bracket 11 to which is aflixed a hydraulic cylinder 12 the piston rod (not shown) of which carries a guide plate 13 travelling on guide pins 14 fixed to the standard 10, and to this guide plate 13 is secured a clamp bar 15 in which is removably clamped by set screws 16 the presser member 17. The.
hydraulic cylinder mechanism 12 is similar to and oper' ates in the same manner as that of the vise-like clamping or pressing members 35, so that downward movement is imparted to its piston and to the clamp bar 15 by fluid pressure, and springs 18 anchored to the bracket 11 of the standard 10 and to the guide plate 13 serve to impart upward or return movement.
Removably and replaceably secured to the fixed jaw member 3 and slidable jaw member 5 are jaw face members 19 and 20, respectively, to the under face of one of which, preferably to the face member 19 of the fixed jaw member 3, is aifixed a support member 21 the freeedged lip of which is capable of sliding movement below and preferably in contact with the bottom of the jaw face member 20 (see Fig. 5) to thus provide a complement to the presser member 17 actuated by the cylinder 12. The presser member 17 and jaw face members 19 and 20 are made removable and replaceable in order to accommodate the apparatus to various types and sizes of coils to be pressed.
As shown particularly in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the coil contacting faces of" the jaw face members 19 and 20 and the support memberll; are provided witli recesses 22" of appropriate width and depth to accommodate the coil clips, and'the. presser member 17 is provided. with similarly appropriate notches. 23 in. its lower or Ieading, .coil..
