The present invention relates generallye to dispensing containers for rolls of gurnmed-labels ;or-. the like.
Anbject of the present. invention-is tonprov-ide a new and .improved;construction for a :diSPQnsingcontainer forayroll-of. gummed labelsaor the like. Another. object of the present invention isto -prov.ide..an inexpensiveand easy-tq-rnanuiacture vendible :container for holding a rolLof gummed-labels orthe like .which twill-enable the user tto Write .upon, or stamp, individual -labels ,and thereafter to tear .ofithe-individual labels. quickly and easily.
.Other. objects and advantages (of the =present invention are apparent fromthe following detailed .description, .tappended claims and accompanying drawings.
' Gummed; labels.,-are conventionally manufactured .and sold-inr=lls with transverse lines ofperforations yfacilitating ther tearing. ,ofi .of the individual labels.
-However,these rolls of gummed labels, \whenexposed, verywftennbecome sticky due' to. inadvertent moistening or-.wetting of the adhesive suchas makes .the n,m essy to handle and frequently causes the top layer of labels to adhere .10 the underlying layer, thereby :making it difiicult..or impossible .to remove individual labels .as desired.
Additionally,.-these rolls of gummed. labels tend .to ,becomenunwound, -.qu ite -readily,-.Which .results in. the-labels becoming; soiled .or crumpled. Furthermore, since most gummed labels are printedmwhollynor partlygin. blank (i. ,e. with. space left thereon for writing tor stamping such .data,.as..the.name of K .the product, the, weight, the price,;etc..) .thefilling in ,of the labels; presentsa problem. That is, where a grocer or other merchant .has,,to -tear oif aand -:-then:.fill Win (by writing ,or stamping thereon) large numbersmof individualdabels, K the z backs ,of. -the labels, ;as :well as :the hands .of..the. user,,.soon,b.e come sticky so.-. that the labels become soiled tandtend to stick to ..the ,,underlying surface, \thereby resulting .in very-appreciable.loss .in time .and, energy.
- Aceordin g to the ,present invention, there is provided, for .theiirst time a simple and inexpensive yendible .con-

. vA se ;a rate, generally, U.rshaped,insergmember:3.4,is;providedlfor the eboxll). .Iheinsert rnernbenfl includesa top wall 35 and side walls 36 and 37. The vertical dimension of the side Walls 36 and 37 is just slightly less than the vertical dimension of the corresponding side Walls 23 and 25 of the box so that the top wall 35 of the insertmember 34 is maintained in juxtaposition to the top wall of the box 20. The top tuck-in flap 29 preferably fits underneath the top wall 35 of the insert-member 34 when the cover or lid 27 is closed, as indicated particularly in Figure 2, so as to provide added support for the top wall 35. The side tuck-in flap 31 fits outside of the side wall 37 of the insert-member 34 as indicated particularly in Figure 1.
The horizontal dimension of the Walls of the insertmember 34 is simewhat less than that of the walls 21, 23, and 26 of the box 20 so that there is a little clearance intermediate the inner edge of the top Wall 35 and the side wall 24.
A roll 38 made up of individual labels 3% separated by transverse lines of perforations 40 is constructed and arranged to be inserted within the box 20 with the roll 33 underneath the top wall 35 of the insert-member 34 and intermediate the side walls 36 and 37. The free end of the roll 38 passes upward and over the inner edge of the top wall 35, and extends across the top wall 35 so that it is visible within the window 22.
The edge 41 of the Window 22 which is nearest the free edge 42 of the top wall 21 is provided with an integrallyformed inturned lip 43 which bears against the adjoining edge of the top wall 35, as shown particularly in Figure 2, so as to provide a shearing-surface for severing individual labels, as will be described hereinbelow. As shown particularly in Figure 4, small supporting cars 44 are provided at the ends of the lip 43.
The dispensing container 20 of this embodiment is operated by first positioning a label so that it is centered with respect to the window 22, in the manner shown in solid lines in Figure 1. In this position, the major portion of the label is exposed so that the user can write or stamp the necessary information thereon; the top wall 35 of the insert-member 34 providing a relatively firm supporting surface during the writing operation.
After the label has been marked, it is moved, by finger pressure, to the position shown in dash-dot lines in Figure 1, wherein its line of perforations 40 is in alignment with the lip 43 so that an upward tearing pull upon the label will result in its being severed from the roll preparatory to being aflixed to a container or the like.
At the same time, the next label is positioned within the window 22 so that it, in turn, is ready to be written upon or stamped.
Optionally, some or all of the eight fold-lines intervening the walls 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26 may be provided with lightweight metal reinforcing strips 45 each bent at right angles along a longitudinal line 46 so as to overlie and fit snugly upon the fold-line of the box. A plurality of small inwardly-extending fastening prongs 47 are integrally struck out from each of the strips 45 and penetrate the wall of the box 20 in the manner indicated particularly in Figure 2 so as to secure the strip 45 into the box 20.
The metal reinforcing strips 45 add considerably to the strength of the box or container 20 and are particularly desirable where the box contains a large roll of labels so that it will be in use for a relatively long period of time.
From the foregoing description, it is readily apparent that the embodiment shown in Figures 1-4 provides a simple inexpensive and compact vendible dispensing container for a roll of gummed labels or the like which will expose each individual label, succesively, in a window, with a relatively secure underlying supporting surface, so that the label can be written upon or stamped conveniently and which will enable the so-marked label to be manually ejected and readily severed from the roll. Since the top wall 35 of the insert-member 34 underlies and fits snugly against the underside of the window 22, the roll 38 of labels is fully enclosed, except for the label to be disposed and, in this way, the roll is protected from dirt, moisture, etc.
In another embodiment of the present invention, shown in Figures 5-9, I may provide a one-piece box or container 50 having a top wall 51, side walls 52, 53 and 54, a bottom Wall 55 and a cover or lid 56; the cover or lid 56 being formed in continuation of the side wall 52 and having a vertical hinge-line 57. While the box or container 50 is shown in the drawing as being in the form of a cube, with square sides formed at right angles to each other, the invention is not limited to a cubic form and, instead, the shape of the walls may be varied as desired.
As shown particularly in Figures 68, the top and bottom walls 51 and 55 may be provided with flaps 58, disposed inside of, and adhesively secured to, the side walls 52 and 54 so as to provide a generally enclosed structure.
Flaps 59 and 60 may be provided at the free edges of the top and bottom walls 51 and 55, respectively, while a flap 61 may be provided upon the free edge of the side wall 54. A slit 62 may be formed in the flap 61 so as to receive and frictionally retain a tongue 63 formed on the free vertical edge of the cover or lid 56.
As is evident from Figure 8, the box 50 is closed by first folding in the flaps 59 and 60 and then folding in the flap 61 and finally closing the cover or lid 56 and inserting the tongue 63 into the slit 62.
As shown particularly in Figure 9, the top wall 51 is provided with a slot 64 extending parallel to and spaced slightly inwardly from the free edge of said top wall 51.
A pair of elongated side retaining- flaps 65 and 66 are integrally struck out of the top wall 51 so that they extend in parallel spaced relationship to each other and generally at right angles to the slot 64.
A roll 33 of individual gummed labels 39 separated by lines of perforations 4% is inserted within the box 50 with its free end emerging from the slot 64; the endmost label extending across and above the top wall 51 with the retaining- flaps 65 and 66 overlying the side edges of the label as indicated particularly in Figures 5, 6 and 7.
With the endmost label in position shown in solid lines in Figure 5, it is supported by the top wall 51 so that it can be written upon or stamped, after which it can be moved manually, by finger pressure, to the position shown in dash-dot lines in Figure 5 wherein it can be torn off. The ends of the retaining- flaps 65 and 66 are provided with small outwardly-directed cutting edges 67 and 68 which serve to initiate the severing of the perforation line when the ejected label is pulled upward.
The positioning of the slot 64 adjacent the open side of the box or container 50 facilitates insertion of the free end of the roll within the slot, preliminary to closing of the cover or lid 56.
In this embodiment, metal reinforcing strips 45 similar to those described hereinabove may be provided for the fold-lines intervening the walls 51-53, 52-53, 5453, 5553, 52-55, and 5455. The fold-lines intervening the walls 51-52 and 5ll54 are without metal reinforcing strips in the embodiment shown in the drawing since these would overlie the retaining- flaps 65 and 66. However, it is apparent that, by making the box slightly oversize with respect to the transverse dimension of the labels in the roll 33, the fold-lines intervening the Walls 5152 and 51-54 can be provided with metal reinforcing strips 45; the retaining- flaps 65 and 66 being formed inwardly of the strips.
In Figures 10-13, there is shown another embodiment of the present invention comprising a one-piece box or container 70 having a top wall 71, side walls 72, 73 and 74, a bottom wall 75 and a cover or lid 76 formed in continuation of the top wall 71 and provided with a horizontal hinge-line 77 disposed somewhat below the uppermost edge of said cover or lid 76. The top and bottom walls 71 and 75 may be provided with flaps 84 disposed inside of, and adhesively secured to, the side walls 72 and 74 so as to form a generally enclosed structure. As will be evident to those skilled in the art, the box 70 (as well as the boxes 20 and 50 of the embodiments described hereinabove) can'I be :provided-with various f other types of flaps 'for' thmpurpose of forming a generally enclosed structure.
The'lo'wer end of thecover orlid 7'6is provided with an insert'flap or tongue 781for frictionally'retaining it in closed pOSltiOH as indicated particularly in Figure 12.
A slot'79 is formed in theltop wall 71 fgenerally parallel'to'but:space'd' somewhat inwardlyfrom the fold-line intervening the'i-top wallifl and the cover or lid 76. A parallel slot 80 is formed in1 the=top wall 71somewhat inwardly from the fold-line'='separating the top wall 71 from' the side wall 73.
The'side'wall '73 is 'provided with'a slot 81 7 generally parallel *to #and spaced somewhat below the fold-line intervening the Walls 73 and 751.
'Metal reinforcing-strips '45 .similar to those described hereinabove arerprovided along the E fold-lines intervening the walls '71-'72, 71-74, 725 75, 7475, and 73-75. A similar metal reinforoing'strip 45 is.;providedxupon the fold-line intervening lthe top wall 71 and the "cover or lid 76. The hingef-line 77 'ris positionedjust 'below the reinforcing strip *45 "while :theislot 79- is positioned just inward of 'said reinforcing strip 45, :as in'dicated particularly in Figures 1'1 "and .132: so 1 that the reinforcing strip doesnot interfere thezfunctions of said hinge-line and slot.
'A- modified m'etal reinforcing st'rip'82 having a slightly outwardly bent straight'sh'eaning-edg'e .83 'is:provided. upon the fold line intervening theto'p wall 71and" the sidewall 73. The shearing-edge- 83 fof the ireinforcing strip 82 extends downward somewh'afifbeyond the slot' 80 as indicatedparticularlyfimEigure.12.
A roll 38 of' 'individual gummed ilabels 39 separated by transverse lines oftperforations-40 is inserted within the box or container 70 and its free en'dfislpassedupward through the-slo't 79, a'cross the topwall 71,-and downward through' the: slot-:80, from which it iipasses 4 diagonally to and out ofthe ':sl'ot' 81,= as indicated in Figure 12.
The end label is thus positioned aboveithe top wall 71,- as shown 'in' solid lines in- Figure: 10 so that it canbe written upon a 'orstamped. 'sThe' s'o-marked end-label 1 can then be moved' manually; by ifinger: pressure, 'to ithe'rposition shown-in da'slr-dotlinesrin Figurei 10 wherein its :line
of perforations' is :inalignment'with the 'shearing-edge 83 so that an upward piill'upon the'label will tear it-ofi.
'The present: invention'lmay\befernbodied in other specific forms withoutdepartingfrom the spirit or-essential attributes thereof, land it is therefore idesir'ed that thei present embodiments -'be considered in all respects as aillustrative and -not're'strictlve, referencebeing had to the appended claims'rather than to: the foregoing "description to indicate the's'cope ofithe invention.
