PACKAGING TRAY AND BLANK Filed July a, 1955 Fig. l
r,rze Q I g l8 w 32 I IB g9 22 I2 IN V EN TOR. JOHN J. OLEARY ATTORNEYS United States Patent PACKAGING TRAY AND BLANK John J. OLeary, West Newton, Mass, assignor to Bestpak Inc., Natick, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application July 8, 1953, Serial No. 366,822
3 Claims. (Cl. 229-27) This invention relates to a novel tray for packaging cakes, cookies and like delicate products and to the paperboard blank from which the tray is formed. The blank is constructed from a single sheet of paperboard without Waste and so formed and scored that the blank readily folds into a three compartment tray. The production of a novel blank and tray of this nature comprises a primary object of the invention.
The blank embodies a rectangular sheet scored to provide bottom and side wall panels and two end portions integral respectively with the two side wall panels. The bottom panel is slotted to receive upwardly therethrough partition panels carried on the extreme end of the end portions, the end portions thus dividing the tray into three compartments and supporting the tray in set-up position. The production of a novel blank and tray of this nature comprises a further object of the invention.
These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for pur poses of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank comprising the invention, and
:Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tray formed from the blank.
The blank 10 shown in Fig. 1 preferably embodies a liner sheet 12 laminated to a corrugated sheet 14. The blank is of rectangular configuration and comprises a body portion 15 disposed between two end portions 16 and is scored along two parallel lines 18 dividing the body portion into a bottom panel and two attached side Wall panels 20 and each end portion into three panels 22.
The bottom panel is slotted transversely thereacross along two spaced lines 24 dividing the bottom panels into three smaller panels 26. One end panel 22 of each end portion 16 is integral with one sidewall panel 20 along a transverse score line 28 and the other two panels thereof are severed from the body portion at 30 along the same line. The other end portion is likewise integral with the,
other side wall panel 20 along a like score line and its Patented Nov. 22, 1955 The blank (Fig. l) is folded into the tray form (Fig. 2) by folding the side panels 20 upwardly on the score lines 18. Each end portion 16 is then folded about the score line 28 to form a corner of the tray and bring the attached end panel into position providing the end wall of the tray. The outermost end panels 22 are then folded upwardly about the score line 32 and tucked upwardly through the slots 24 and thereupon become partitions separating the tray into three compartments.
It will now be noted that the two end walls 22 are respectively integral with the two side walls 26) at diagonally opposite corners of the tray and thus serve to hold the side walls in raised position. Each intermediate end panel 22 underlies the bottom wall of the adjacent compartment of the tray and substantially corresponds thereto in shape and area. The tray is adapted to receive cakes and the like individually in the compartments and the filled tray will ordinarily be wrapped in cellophane or the like for the market. 1
Having thus disclosed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A paperboard blank comprising a body portion and two end portions and scored along two parallel lines dividing the body portion into a bottom panel and two attached side wall panels and each end portion into three panels, the bottom panel being slotted transversely thereacross along two spaced lines dividing the bottom panel into three smaller panels, one end panel of one end portion being integral with one side wall panel along a transverse score line and the other two panels thereof being severed from the body portion along the same line, and the other end portion having an end panel integral with the other side wall panel along a like transverse score line and its other two panels severed from the body portion along said like score line, the intermediate panel of each end portion corresponding in shape and area to the adjacent smaller bottom panel.
2 A packaging tray constructed from a paperboard blank and comprising a bottom wall and two attached side walls, two end walls respectively integral with the two side walls at diagonally opposite corners of the tray, and two vertically disposed end portions respectively integral with the two end walls and extending upwardly through slots in the bottom wall and dividing the tray into three compartments.
3. The packaging tray defined in claim 2 in which each end wall has integral therewith along a score line an intermediate panel underlying the bottom wall of the adjacent compartment and integrally connected to the adjacent vertically disposed end portion along a score line.
