Description

Nov. 22, 1955 o. oMENsoN, JR
BOX CUTTER Filed Feb. 19, 1954 ATTORNEYS j United States Patent Otlice 2,724,435 Patented Nov. 22, 1955 desired purposes, as for example for holding gifts or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a box cutting device which is provided with a gauge or scale so that boxes can be cut to a given size with a higher degree of accuracy, the present invention permits boxes that were initially used for holding merchandise to be cut down so i that they can be made into smaller sized boxes for holding gifts and the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box cutting device which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the box cutting device, constructed according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the box cutting device.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the blade holder.
Figure 4 is an endelevational View of the box cutting device.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the box cutting device.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral designates a base which can be made of any suitable material, and the base 10 includes a longitudinal side edge 11. Extending inwardly from the side edge 11 is a plurality of spaced parallel slots 12, and the base is also provided with a slot 14. The slots 12 and 14 are adapted to receive the sides or ends of a box such as a cardboard box which is to be cut down to a smaller size, and the bottom of the box is adapted to abut against or rest against the edge 11.
Extending upwardly from the ends of the base 10 and secured thereto is a pair of spaced parallel bearing blocks 16 and 17. Extending between the pair of blocks 16 and 17 and secured thereto is a pair of spaced parallel rods 18 and 19.
Mounted for longitudinal movement along the base 10 on the rods 18 and 19 is a holder 20. The holder 20 is provided with an aperture 21 which slidably receives the rod 18, Figure 3, and the holder is also provided with a slit or slot 22 which receives slidably the other rod 19. This provision of the aperture 21 and slot 22 permits the holder 20 to be slid back and forth along the base, and also permits the holder 20 to be pivoted about an axis extending through the rod 18 as when a blade 25 is to be removed or replaced. The blade 25 is seated in a slot or slit 24 which is arranged in a body portion 23 on the holder 20. A set screw 26 is provided for maintaining the blade 25 immobile in the slot 24. A handle 27 extends upwardly from the holder 20 whereby the holder can be shifted back and forth to cut the cardboard box therebelow.
The upper surface of the base 10 is also provided with a plurality of spaced parallel longitudinally extending grooves or channels 28 which receive the lower edge of the blade 25. Thus, the grooves 28 insure that the blade Z5 will not become dulled and also insure that the base 2 10 will not be cut or marred during movement of the blade holder by the handle 27, The base 119 is provided with a plurality of openings 9 which are spaced along the ends, and these openings 9 are adapted to receive securing elements such as bolts 8 having wing nuts thereon, and the bolts 8 extend through the bearing blocks 16 and 17 and through the openings 9. Thus, the bearing blocks 16 and 17 can be shifted along the base 10 as desired, and the bolt and nut assemblies 8 will maintain the blocks immobile in their various adjusted positions. The blocks 16 and 17 on each end of the base hold the two rods 18 i and 19 and the blocks can be adjusted to correspond with different settings of the gauge 15. The plurality of grooves 2S receive the cutting blade 25 regardless of what position the bearing blocks are in.
From the foregoing it is apparent that a device has been provided for cutting materials such as cardboard boxes. When the present invention is being used for cutting down boxes which may be made of cardboard or other material, the box is arranged so that two of its sides or ends extend through the slots 14 and 12, and the bottom of the box is iiush against the edge 11 if desired. Then, the handle 27 is gripped and the holder 20 is moved across the rods 1d and 19 so that the blade 25 will sever the portion of the box between the rods 1S and 19 and the upper surface of the base 10. After one side of the box has been severed or cut, the box can be moved degrees and the next side can be cut in a similar manner until all of the sides are cut down to the desired size and the gauge 15' can be used for ascertaining the size of the cut.
The present invention will cut down boxes such as regular merchandise boxes so that such boxes can be used for any desired purpose as for example for gift boxes. By providing the plurality of slots 12, boxes of diterent sizes can be accommodated. The device can be made of any suitable material such as wood or metal or plastics.
I claim:
A box cutting device comprising a rectangular base having a plurality of spaced parallel slots extending inwardly from a side edge thereof, a pair of spaced parallel bearing blocks mounted on the upper surface of said base, there being a plurality of openings spaced along the ends of said base, securing elements extending through said bearing blocks and through said openings, a pair of spaced parallel rods extending between said blocks and secured thereto, said rods having their longitudinal axes arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of said base, a blade holder slidably mounted on said rods and provided with a longitudinally extending aperture for slidably receiving one of said rods, there being a slit in the undersurface of said holder for slidably engaging the other rod, a blade carried by said holder, means for securing said blade in said holder, and a handle extending upwardly and angularly from said holder for moving the latter, said means comprising an enlarged central body portion provided with a slit in its lower surface for receiving said blade, a set screw extending through said body portion and engaging said blade for maintaining said blade in said slit, and scale markings onsaid base defining a gauge, the upper surface of said base being provided with a plurality of spaced parallel longitudinally extending grooves for receiving the lower edge of said blade.
