United States Patent CORNERWISE EXTENDIBLE TABLE Irving Spector, Miami, Fla.
Application July 15, 1953, Serial No. 368,029
6 Claims. (Cl. 312-282) "This invention relates to an extensible table and more particularly to a table having a supplemental top section adapted to be extended diagonally relative to the main body of the table.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of a generally rectangular body portion having L shaped top and a supplemental top adapted to nest within the L shaped top section.
A further object is the provision of a 2-section table normally used as one, but having a portion which may be diagonally extended relative to the main body portion, to form a cocktail table or the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of such a table provided with a nested section which may be moved upwardly and outwardly to a diagonal position while constantly remaining level.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a table wherein the supplemental top section is pro- 1 vided on its under side with extensible and retractable supporting legs.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of such a table wherein the legs are normally spring biased toward the retracted position and wherein the legs are automatically extended as the supplemental top section is moved outwardly.
A further object of the invention is the provision of such a table which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
Still other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this invention concept.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of one form of the device embodying the instant invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device of Fig. 1 shown in retracted position.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2 as viewed in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a diagonal sectional view disclosing supplemental top section in partially extended position.
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the construction in fully extended position.
Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the supplemental table top in extended position.
Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are enlarged detailed sectional views showing the mechanism by which the legs are extended, each view being in a difierent position of adjustment.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having reference to the drawings in detail, there is generally indicated at 10 a main body which includes an L shaped top section 11, side walls 12 and a bottom portion 13. The construction is supported by a rear leg 14 and diagonally disposed intermediately positioned side ICC legs 15. The bottom 13 is provided with a diagonally disposed elongated slot 16, on opposite sides of which are located partition 17 extending diagonally across the interior of the body formed by the side walls 12.
Extending upwardly from each leg of the top 11 is a vertical support 20, the two supports 20 serving in turn as a support for an arcuate shelf or tray 21 which latter may serve to contain glasses, bottles or the like, while the interior of the main body portion 10 may serve as a suitable storage receptacle for glasses, bottles or the like.
The space between the legs of L shaped top 11 is adapted to be filled by a supplemental top section generally indicated at 25. The under side 26 of section 25 is provided with a pair of spaced apart L shaped brackets 27 between which are pivotally connected a pair of spaced apart substantially identicallevers 28. The levers 28 are normally in parallel relation and extend downwardly to pivots 29 which are connected between a pair of spaced brackets 30 connected to the under side of the bottom 13 of the main body portion. It will thus be seen that upon swinging of the levers 28 from the position shown in Fig. 4 through the position of Fig. 5 and to the position of Fig. 6 that supplemental table top 25 is maintained and in constantly horizontal relation. At the diagonally positioned outer corner of top 25 there is provided a leg 31 which in turn is provided at its tip with an adjustable button 32 for leveling purposes. When the table is in retracted posi- 7 tion, this leg seats in a corner groove 33 of main body portion 10.
Auxiliary supporting legs 35, each provided with rubber tip 36, are carried by the under side 26 of table top section 25, and each of legs 35 include a transverse portion 40 which is joumaled for rotation in depending brackets 41 carried by a plate 42 secured to the under side 26 of table top 25. There are provided a pair of brackets 42 disposed in diagonal relationship on opposite sides of brackets 27. Positioned adjacent the end of each transverse section 40 there is positioned collet 50, from one side of which projects pin 51, and from the other side of which projects lug 52 to which is secured one end of a compression spring 53, the opposite end of each spring 53 being secured to a suitable pin 54 carried by one of bracket plates 27.
Obviously, the arrangement of the springs is such as normally to bias legs to the position as indicated in Figs. 4, 5 and 8.
From the foregoing the operation of the device should now be readily understandable as the supplemental top section 25 is moved from the Fig. 4 to Fig. 5 position, lever 28 moved from diagonal position of Fig. 4 to a vertical position, the legs 35 remaining in retracted position under bias springs 53 during this movement, however, as the movement progresses as best shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10, pin 51 is engaged by pin 55, which rotates transverse portion 40 to extend legs 35 to supporting position as best shown in Fig. 6.
From the foregoing it may now be seen that there is herein provided an improved extensible table which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein should be interpreted as merely illustrative and not in a limited sense.
I claim:
1. In a corner table, a rectangular body section including a bottom and an L shaped top, a second top section of rectangular configuration nesting in said L shaped top and in flush relation therewith, means for extending said second top section diagonally relative to said body, oppo sitely disposed retractable legs carried by the diagonal corners of under side of said second top section and means normally contained within said body section for extending said legs upon extension of said second top section, said last mentioned means including .a slot in said body section and extending diagonally across a portion of said body section, a lever pivoted in one diagonal corner of said slot, a pivoted connection between said lever and the under side of said second top section, a pin carried by each of said legs and an abutment carried by said lever engageable by said pin, for extending said legs.
2. The construction of claim 1 wherein each of said legs includes a transverse portion pivotally carried by the under side of said body and said pin is connected to said transverse portion.
3. The construction of claim 2 wherein spring means connected between said transverse portion and the under side of said second top section normally bias said legs toward retracted position.
4. The construction of claim 2 wherein said body includes a bottom and side walls, and said slot extends diagonally across said bottom.
5. The construction of claim 3 wherein diagonal partitions are provided on opposite sides of said slot for a substantial portion of the length of the body.
6. The construction of claim 1 wherein a second lever is pivotally connected in parallel relation to said first lever to stabilize said second top section upon extension thereof.
