CAR. STARTER. I No. 272,358. v Patented Feb. 13,1883.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL UTZ AND THEODOB SPRIOK, OF ODESSA, RUSSIA.
CAR-STARTER.
SPECIFICATION .forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,358, dated February Application filed December 16, 1882. (No model.)
- To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat we, EMIL UTZ and. TEEO- DOR SPRIOK, subjects of the Emperor of Bussia and Emperor of Austria, respectively, and
residents of Odessa, in the Empire of Russia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in'Oar-Starters, of which the fol ings, Figure l is a longitudinal section; Fig.
2, a view below the car-floor, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of parts of a tram-car fitted with our apparatus. Fig. 4. is a side view, partly in section, showing a modified form of apparatus; and Fig. 5 shows an entire tramcar fitted with our arrangements.
On each of the two axles of the two pairs of wheels is keyed a ratchet-wheel, a. On each side of the ratchet-wheel a the levers b b, carrying between them the pawl c, are pivoted. The pawl c is provided with the weight 0, having the tendency to raise it away from the ratchet-wheel. The levers b b are connected by the rods g with the draw-bar. The rod 9 is provided with the adjustable nut h, which, when the rod is drawn forward, presses against the helical spring m, and thus limits theiorward motion of the said rod. By altering the position of the nut h, the length of the draft of the rod g may be adjusted. The joint of' the rods 9 7c is hung to a cross-beam of the car by The pawl c is connected means of the link a. by a cord or chain, 1, with the treadlej' on the platform'of the car.
The action of this apparatus is as follows: When the horse or horses drawing the car are stopped the yoke goes back, and pushing back the rods g k the levers b b also fall back, so that they will have the position shown in Fig. 1. Before starting, the driver presses his foot on the treadle f, thus drawing forward the cord or chain l, and raises the weighted end'of the pawl c and brings its other end into gear with the ratchet-wheel a. On then startin g the car the rods 9 k pull forward the levers b b and with them the pawl 0, thus moving the ratchetwheel keyed to the axle and consequently also moving the car-wheels.
It is evident that the levers I) b may be con-' nected to the rod g by means of a chain, as shown in Fig. 4, instead of the rod k.
In order to keep out of action-the starting Q arrangement attached to the hinder pair of wheels, the hind treadle,f, may be fixed by any suitable locking arrangement,p, as indicated in Fig. 5. i
It is evident that the ratchet-wheel a may be made in two pieces, in order to facilitate attaching it to the axle, and that a single lever b, instead of a pair of levers, may be used.
We claim 1. In a car-starter, the combination of a ratchet-wheel upon the axle of the car, a pivoted lever upon the axle, rods connecting the pivoted lever to-the draw-bar, and a retractile spring upon said rods with a weighted- Witnesses:
