A. G., Bern, Switzerland, 2 joint stock company of Switzerland Application January 19, 1952, Serial No. 267,247 Claims priority, application Switzerland January23, 1951 4 Claims. Cl. 276-44 f This invention relates to a compositors type case stand, inwhich anumber of type cases is arranged for withdrawal like drawers and which'offers to the compositor a horizontal work piece free from obstructions, on which a galley can be deposited and which, in addition, provides support for a type case both in horizontal and in forwardly inclined position.
In the drawings afiixed to this specification and forming part thereof an embodiment of this invention is illustrated diagrammatically by way of example.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a-perspective view, and
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the right-hand half of the case stand.
As shown in the drawings, two cabinets 1 of equal height are arranged in juxtaposition, each one having a plurality of type cases 2 arranged in superposition. Each cabinet is topped by a zinc plate 3 which is freely accessible from the front. The left top plate, which is free from any obstructions, serves as a horizontal work place on which may be deposited galleys 4. On the rear section of this cabinet is mounted a shelf 5 with side walls 6 and a rear wall 7. Near the front edges of the middle and their right-hand side walls two supports 8 are arranged coaxially (only one being visible). To the rear of these supports, but at a higher level, an angle iron 9 extends between the side walls with its open side arranged on top.
It serves as a support for a container 10 for space material arranged in inclined position. On the supports 8 rest the legs 12 of a strap 11 which can be shifted into the position shown in dot-and-dash lines, where its bevelled ends 13 can rest in the corner formed at the foot end of the rear wall 7 of the shelf.
In both of its positions the strap 11-12 will be secured by means of two pairs of checks 14 fixed to the legs 12 and alternately abutting against the pins 8. These arms V are further provided with indentations 15, which in the position of the strap 1112 shown in full lines embrace the back of the channel 9. Rounded indentations 16 on the bottom sides of the arms 12 secure their position on the pins 8 when the strap assumes the position shown in dot-and-dash lines.
Directly underneath the top plate 3 of the right-hand cabinet two metal tubes 17 are fixed, each of which embraces a liar 18 adapted to be displaced lengthwise through a distance about equal to the longitudinal displacement of the strap arms 12. Each of the tubes 17 is formed with a longitudinal bayonet slot 19. A pin 20 fixed to each bar 18 projects through the slot and fixes the bar 18 in either end position. A head 21 fixed to the end of each bar 18 projects above the surface of the top and a rubber buffer 22 is seated in the head.
The bars 18 and the strap 11 form coacting supports for a case 2 to be held in forwardly inclined position above the top plate 3. This case may assume two positions, one shown in full lines, where it rests with its front end against the projecting head 21 of the two bars projecting as far as possible from the front wall of the stand. In
the position of the parts 18 and 11 shown in dot-anddash lines the case'is supported with its front ledge resting on the front edge of the plate 3, being prevented from slipping olf by the projecting head 21.
As shown more particularly in Fig. 1, a drawer directly below the work table 3 may serve as a' receptacle'fo'r spacing" material. This drawer can be withdrawn into a position where a considerable part of it becomes accessible from above even if the bars 18 have been pulled out fully and support a case. Several such drawers may be pro vided. I
The shelf 5 presents a number of horizontal compartrnents 23 serving for the deposition of further spacing material. The bottoms 25 extending between the side walls 24 of these compartments are inclined towards the rear. A V-shaped ledge 26 extending across the bottom 27 of the lowermost row of compartments 23 serves as a channel for the reception of type assembled for the formation of lines. Several such V-shaped ledges may be provided I v i i wish it to be understood that I doubt desire to be limited to the details shown in the drawings and described in the specification for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
I claim:
I. A compositors case stand comprising a lower part having a front, a plurality of cases drawerlike slidable in and out of said lower part through said front, said lower part having a substantially horizontal top, said top having a rear portion, a plurality of rodlike supporting means longitudinally substantially horizontally slidable in said lower part adjacent to said top to project from said front and to be retracted into said lower part, additional supporting means disposed above and movably connected with said rear portion for movement towards and from said front to assume a forward and a rearward position, each of said cases having a front end and a rear end, said rodlike supporting means being adapted to support the front end and said additional supporting means being adapted to support the rear end of one of said cases after said case has been slid out of said lower part and placed with the front end on said rodlike supporting means and with the rear end on said additional supporting means, locking means connected with said rodlike supporting means for locking the latter in either one of their extreme positions, handles individually connected with the front ends of said rodlike supporting means and extending upwardly beyond said top when said rodlike supporting means are in one of their extreme positions, said handles forming an abutment for the case which is placed on said supporting means, said additional supporting means including arresting means for arresting said supporting means in two extreme positions corresponding to the extreme positions of said rodlike supporting means, said lower part including stationary tubes individually slidably receiving said rodlike supporting means, a longitudinal slot in each tube, a circumferential slot portion extending from each end of said longitudinal slots, and a pin projecting from each of said rodlike supporting means into the slot of the tube receiving the supporting means and constituting said locking means.
2. A compositors case stand comprising a lower part having a front, a plurality of cases drawerlike slidable in and out of said lower part through said front, said lower part having a substantially horizontal top, said top having a rear portion, a plurality of rodlike supporting means longitudinally substantially horizontally slidable in said lower part adjacent to said top to project from said front and to be retracted into said lower part, additional supporting means disposed above and movably connected with said rear portion for movement towards and from said front to assume a forward and a rearward position,
each of said cases having a front end and a rear end, said rodlike supporting means being adapted to support the front end and said additional supporting means being adapted to support the rear end of one of said cases after said case has been slid out of said lower part and placed with the front end on said rodlike supporting means and with the rear end on said additional supporting means, a rear wall vertically upwardly extending from the rear of said top and forming a corner therewith, a side wall at each end of said lower part and extending vertically upwardly from said rear portion at a right angle with respect to said rear wall, a support projecting from each of said side walls and being above said top, saidsupports facing one another and forming a rest for said additional supporting means, and a transverse member interconnecting said side walls and being in the rear of and higher above said top than said supports, said additional supporting means abutting against said transverse member from below, when said additional supporting means are in forward position, said additional supporting means having rear ends extending into said corner when said additional supporting means are in rearward position.
3. A compositors case stand according to claim 2 comprising a receptacle having a forward end resting on said transverse member andhaving a rearward end at a higher elevation than said forwardend and abutting against said rear wall.
1 4. A compositors case stand according to claim 2 in which said additional supporting means have recesses into which individually extend said supports when said additional supporting means are in rearward position and said additional supporting means have additional recesses into which extends said transverse member when said additional supporting means are in forward position.
