Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. McGALLA, OF GALION, oHIo.
CLOTl-IES-POUNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,288, dated February 13, 1883.
Application filed January 8, 1883. (No model.)
clothes-pounder, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to clothes-pounders; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same. as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A represent two metallic funnels, surmounted by two lintel-shaped hollow air-chambers, BB. The lower sides of these air-chambers are perforated inside the funnel, as shown.
at C, while two upright tubes, D D, extend down through their upper sides, said tubes being braced by two small cones, E E, fastened upon the tops of the air-chambers and forming continuations of the funnels A. The tubes D are connected by a tubular handle, F, into which they open, while they are furthermore held together and braced by a cross-bar, G. The lower ends, H, of the tubes D are perforated to admit air into them, which is conducted from one of them to the other by the handle. The annular bulged part Iof the under side of the air-chambers may be made elastic or yielding, so that as the pounder cups or funnels are immersed in the suds and worked against the clothes they will assistin drawing in andemittingwaterorsuds, drivingitthrough the clothes. It will also be seen that by'rocking the two pounder-cups, admitting air into one of them at a time and then depressing it, the air will pass through the hollow handle from cup to cup, and be forced with the water through the clothes, giving them a very thorough treatment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The clothes-pounder cup having lower fun nel-shaped part, A, and upper lintel-shaped air-chamber, B, connected with the lower part through its perforated under side, G, as shown and set forth.
2. The clothes-pounder cup having lower funnel-shaped part, A, and upper liutel-shap'ed air-chamber, B, having the perforated part 0 of the under side inside the funnel, and the elastic annular part I outside the funnel, as shown and set forth. 4
3. The combination of the tubular uprights D, having lower perforated part, H, and connected by tubular handle F, braced by brace G and supported by funnel-shaped pieces E, with the pounder-cups consisting of thevfunnel'shaped lower parts, A, and upper'lintelshaped air-chambers, B, havingperforated part 0 and elastic part I oftheunderside, as shown and described.
4. The herein-described clothes-pounder, consisting of the funnels A, air-chambers B,
havingperforated under sides, O,funnel-shaped 1 own I have hereuto I affixed my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. lYIoGALLA.
